On the Securitization of Student Loans and the Financial Crisis of 2007–2009
On the Securitization of Student Loans and the Financial Crisis of 2007–2009 by Maxime Roy Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Tepper School of Business Carnegie Mellon University May 16, 2017 Committee: Burton Hollifield (chair), Adam Ashcraft, Laurence Ales and Brent Glover External Reader: Pierre Liang À Françoise et Yvette, mes deux anges gardiens. abstract This dissertation contains three chapters, and each examines the securitization of student loans. The first two chapters focus on the underpricing of Asset-Backed Securities (ABS) collateralized by government guaranteed student loans during the financial crisis of 2007–2009. The findings add to the literature that documents persistent arbitrages during the crisis and doing so in the ABS market is a novelty. The last chapter focuses on the securitization of private student loans, which do not benefit from government guarantees. This chapter concentrates on whether the disclosure to investors is sufficient to prevent the selection of underperforming pools of loans. My findings have normative implications for topics ranging from the regulation of securitization to central banks’ exceptional provision of liquidity during crises. Specifically, in the first chapter, “Near-Arbitrage among Securities Backed by Government Guaranteed Student Loans,” I document the presence of near-arbitrage opportunities in the student loan ABS (SLABS) market during the financial crisis of 2007–2009. I construct near-arbitrage lower bounds on the price of SLABS collateralized by government guaranteed loans. When the price of a SLABS is below its near-arbitrage lower bound, an arbitrageur that buys the SLABS, holds it to maturity and finances the purchase by frictionlessly shorting short-term Treasuries is nearly certain to make a profit. -

HBSAAL Newsletter December 2019
HBSAAL Newsletter December 2019 INTRODUCTION Dear Friends and Members, It is my pleasure to share with you the first HBS Alumni Angels of London (HBSAAL) newsletter. With over 5,000 alumni in London we play an important role in helping foster an increasingly vibrant and economically important start-up ecosystem. Our local Alumni chapter was launched in 2011, and in that time our members have made investments totalling £7.2M (excluding secondary investments) in over 40 companies. We all know that angel investing requires patience and a portfolio mindset, so we are delighted with notable exits such as Stupeflix and DogBuddy along with significant up-rounds from recent investments such as FlatFair, Seldon, Urban and Pavegen. This past July five companies that received investment from our members were shortlisted for the UK British Angel Association (UKBAA) awards. HBS alum Romi Savova of PensionBee won Best High Growth Woman Founder. Our investors bring more than just cash they also bring a strong network and valuable business experience. We are all committed to life-long learning and our educational events have covered topics ranging from thematic investing in artificial intelligence and fintech to practical tips on angel investing. We had a successful pitch event on Nov 19th, and on Nov 27th we hosted a panel discussion with some of the most successful angel investors in the UK. This was hosted at McKinsey & Co’s new UK headquarters. We will also shortly be introducing you to the wider HBS Alumni Global organisation where you can gain access to syndicated deals from HBSAA Chapters, such as New York, Silicon Valley, Beijing, Paris and Brazil along with access to global educational webinars. -
Meniga Joins Nexi Open
Meniga joins Nexi Open The world's number-one fintech developer of digital financial management solutions becomes part of Nexi's open banking ecosystem Nexi's partner banks will be able to offer innovative financial management services to individuals and small businesses and integrate these services into their internet banking apps or services Milan, 15 September 2020 - Nexi, the PayTech firm that leads Italy's digital payments sector, has signed a partnership with Meniga, the world's leading fintech provider of personal and business financial management solutions. Under the agreement, Meniga, the first company to develop a portfolio of financial management support services aimed at strengthening the bank-customer relationship, is joining Nexi Open: Nexi's partner banks will thus be able to offer their customers the fintech firm’s PFM and BFM services, enhanced by the new features enabling customer account access and money transfer between accounts governed by the PSD2 regulations. Credit institutions will be able to provide individuals with the advanced features of a Personal Financial Manager, while also providing small businesses with the services of a Business Financial Manager: in both cases the features can, at the discretion of each bank, be integrated directly into their digital properties, whether they are internet banking, apps or of another variety. Specifically, PFM services allow individuals to obtain a clear picture of their finances by aggregating transactions from several current accounts in a single view, to classify income and expenses according to specific financial items and to be notified promptly when budget limits are exceeded, thus helping to set personal savings targets.
