Catalog Description/ Prerequisite/ Co-requisites: Focuses on expository and argument writing. Students develop advanced reading, critical thinking, and writing skills as they analyze and build arguments in various forms, using research as the basis for developing their own arguments. Prerequisite: ENGL 101 with a grade of C or higher and completion of ENGL 003, 007, or 057 with a grade of C or higher, or its equivalent.

Learning Outcomes: Read critically to summarize and evaluate an author’s position, purpose, tone, audience, and style Recognize fallacious and/or misleading arguments Conduct research to locate sources appropriate for the assignment Synthesize information from academic sources Employ effective rhetorical strategies in an argument Draw conclusions consistent with the claim and evidence presented in arguments Write at a level of advanced thought, diction, and style Use an accepted academic format and documentation style

/ Planned Sequence of Instruction: English 102 consists of four to eight writing assignments. A single assignment typically includes:

instructor’s presentation/explanation of assignment reading and class discussion of assigned material.Later assignments inthe course typically require more independent reading and research by students. writing of initial drafts.Consultation with instructor, or group sessions in class to revise drafts. possible consultation or group work to revise second drafts. grading of assignments by instructor possible further revision of selected assignments in the preparation of a final portfolio of work for the course
