Jerry Garcia, famed lead guitarist, songwriter and singer for The Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band, among others, was born on August 1, 1941 in San Francisco, CA. Dead.net has this to say: “As lead guitarist in a rock environment, Jerry Garcia naturally got a lot of attention. But it was his warm, charismatic personality that earned him the affection of millions of Dead Heads. He picked up the guitar at the age of 15, played a little ‘50s rock and roll, then moved into the folk acoustic guitar era before becoming a bluegrass banjo player. Impressed by The Beatles and Stones, he and his friends formed a rock band called the Warlocks in late 1964 and debuted in 1965. As the band evolved from being blues-oriented to psychedelic/experi- mental to adding country and folk influences, his guitar stayed out front. His songwriting partnership with Robert Hunter led to many of the band’s most memorable songs, including “Dark Star”, “Uncle John’s Band” and the group’s only Top 10 hit, “Touch of Grey”. Over the years he was married three times and fathered four daughters. With their debut full-length, 'From Ashes' (2006), ABYSMAL DAWN immediately made bigger splashed and gained international recognition. The release was followed by a first US tour supporting SIX FEET UNDER and DECAPITATED as well as many more shows. Subsequently, ABYSMAL DAWN experienced some changes in their line-up, which left Charles Elliott as the only original member. The reformed band entered studio in August 2010 to record 'Leveling the Plane of Existence', which was unleashed in the following year. Mixed and mastered by Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, HATE ETERNAL), their third full-length featured guest-appearances by Moyses Kolesne (KRISIUN) and Kragen Lum (HEATHEN), who both contributed guitar solos. A tour with CANNIBAL CORPSE and EXHUMED underscored the band's growing status. The Americans had established themselves firmly within their country's death metal canon and continued to cement their base with the sophomore album, 'Programmed to Consume' (2008). With more experience under their belt, this record witnessed the band taking a big step in regards of their songwriting while carefully expanding their horizon without betraying the original spirit. More touring followed with such prolific acts as MISERY INDEX, ORIGIN, and OBSCURA among others.

Rarely has there ever been such a collection of pioneering bands of extreme music on one label at a special period of time. This DVD features many of the greatest bands ever such as MORBID ANGEL , CATHEDRAL , NAPALM DEATH , CARCASS , and ENTOMBED as well as some that never quite broke big such as GANDALF and DUB WAR . The most glaring and immediate characteristic of this compilation is the grainy visual quality of it all. The DVD looks as if it was taken off of an old VHS master tape. Some videos look worse than others. Immortalised finds redemption for this flaw in the fact that the material on the DVD is just too strong, diverse, and entertaining to deny.

Abstract How do cultural producers square customary understandings of what it means to be authentic and autonomous creators in new contexts characterized by digital-era entrepreneurial pressures and online platform-mediated financial opportunities? This study examines how heavy metal recording artists experience these pressures; how some of them engage in platform-based crowdfunding, argue over its legitimacy, and rationalize varying degrees of acceptance and dependence. First, my analysis centers on a case study which follows the experiences of a progressive metal band as they navigate a new financial relation in conjunction first with the fundraising platform Pozible and then the patronage-based crowdfunding platform Patreon.
