winchestercityfc “THE CITIZENS POST” DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and may I start by saying a very happy new year to everybody and let’s hope for a good and exciting 2018. I think it’s fair to say that the new year is starting with a bang with a local derby against AFC Totton who are riding high, Louis and Adam are doing a good job over there at Totton, to be fair it’s a club that’s got the facilities for higher leagues and they are pushing for promotion, I have to also give a mention to Wayne Mew who I have a lot of time for who also seems to have done a good job with their off-field activities. Having said all of that and despite it being one of the friendlier derbies I have encountered there will be no love lost when hostilities start on the pitch, we will be gunning for them and looking to get the 3 points that would take us above them again in the league, I think we are set for an exciting game, a good performance is what we are looking for, if we do that we will get the result we want.

Boxing Day... well what a way to ruin a Christmas that was, we went into it off the back of 4 wins in a row, there was concern over the pitch and we were desperate for the game to be on, as it happened the pitch was not really playable by the end of the game and it far from suited our players who could barely stand up let alone use our pace on the attack and that stifled us badly, don’t get me wrong Wimborne are a good side and deserved their win but it could have been a very different afternoon if we had got the first goal. In the first half we dominated the game and created plenty but no goal came, just after half time they scored and we had a few chances but still no goal came (first time since September we have failed to score) they got a 2nd and it was tough after that in the driving rain and puddled pitch, we ended up 3-0 losers in the end, we spoke about what went wrong and have now put it to bed and we are ready to bounce back hopefully today. For all of our supporters, I am sorry we couldn’t produce the display that we needed to give us all a good last Christmas present, it’s the old adage though that I preach to the lads, forget results and get the performances right and the result will take care of itself, in that 2nd half that was so true! Let’s hope we can put that right today.

Player news, we are still without Danny King but we have everyone else available for today and we look forward to the game, it will be a decent crowd and we will need our support at their most vocal for this one, let’s hope we can give you all plenty to shout about.

Up the citizens!

“THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS

I hope that you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve last Night and that you are now ready for this exciting local derby between the Citizens and our old friends the Stags. We welcome their Chairman Wayne Mew and his wife Caroline here to the Simplyhealth City Ground along with his officials, management team, players and fans. A warm welcome to you all!

We are expecting a close game that befits this close encounter. We sit next to AFC Totton in the league table on the same number of points but with Totton having played one game less than Winchester City.

We are hoping for a good crowd as it is a Bank Holiday and so let’s have a great game and a great atmosphere! And best wishes for a healthy and successful New Year.

Kind Regards

Paul Murray

Chairman

Winchester City Football Club

FROM EVERYBODY AT WINCHESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB:

“THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT… AFC TOTTON CLUB HISTORY

Totton Football Club was formed in 1886 and became one of the founder members of the Hampshire F.A. when it was inaugurated, and was also one of the founder members of the New Forest League, formed in 1904. After the 1914/18 War they entered the Southampton Senior League and the New Forest League, and in 1920/21 joined the Hampshire League West.

The early matches were played at South Testwood Park before Totton moved to Testwood Park, on 30th December 1933. In 1975 they amalgamated with Totton Athletic, installed floodlights and opened a Club Room and Bar at the ground.

Totton’s most successful season was in 1981/82 when they won Hampshire League Division 1 for the first time, the Russell Côtes Cup, Hampshire Intermediate Cup, Southampton Senior Cup and Reg Mathieson Trophy and in 1983 reached the 5th round of the FA Vase losing 1-0 away to the cup holders Forest Green Rovers.

Totton became one of the founder members of the Wessex League when it was formed in the 1986/87 season, finishing third. The Medisport Wessex League Cup was won in 1989/90 and the Club was runner-up to Southern League Bashley in the Russell Cotes Cup in 1990/91.

The Carlsberg FA Vase provided the Club with a good run in 2001, reaching the 4th Round.

Season 2002/03 saw the Club enjoy a good FA Cup run before losing to Slough Town in a 1st Qualifying Round replay. The Club did gain some silverware though, beating League Champions Eastleigh 2-1 in the final of the Jewson Wessex Football League Cup.

2005/06 saw many changes in Team personnel and with Stuart Ritchie now at the helm, 4th place was gained in the League, together with a fine run in the FA Cup and the winning of the Wessex League Cup for a third time.

2006/07, proved to be the most memorable in the history of the Club. In the League, the first Team had a season-long battle with Gosport, missing out on the title by one goal - a bitter disappointment after having led the table from October until the last week of the season, but the highlight of the season was the Final of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the new Wembley Stadium for the first time in the Club’s history, Sadly, in front of a record 36,232 crowd for a Vase Final we had to settle for Runners-up spot after a thoroughly entertaining and skilful match against Truro City, losing 3-1.

After the achievements of the previous season, 2007/2008 was always going to be a challenge. A good early run in the FA Cup set the team up nicely for the season, and that momentum extended into a great run in the League. In what became a battle with any of five teams in with a chance, the team responded brilliantly, ultimately producing 27 points from 30 in March & April to seal our first ever Wessex League Championship, and promotion to the BGB Southern League. Certainly the past two seasons will linger long in the memories of those lucky enough to be part of the adventure, and a glowing tribute to a dedicated team and fantastic supporters. An exciting new adventure was about to begin!

2008/09 saw AFC Totton reach new heights after being promoted to the Southern League South and West Division One. After a table topping start to the season we eventually finished 3rd in the league and after beating Beaconsfield SYCOB in the play off semi-final we ended up with a home tie for the final against Didcot Town. It was a superb match which went to extra time before Didcot scored the winner.

2009/10 had seen AFC Totton lift the Hampshire Senior Cup after reaching the final for the first time in the Club’s history. This wrapped up yet another great season for the Stags as we narrowly missed out on promotion for the second season in a row, this time finishing runners up in the league and losing in the play off semi-final against Cirencester Town 2-3, after coming from 2 goals down to unfortunately concede a goal in the 90th minute.

2010/11 was one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history, picking up not only the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time but also retaining it from the 2009/10 season beating Sholing 3-1 at St. Marys Stadium. But this was eclipsed by the club being crowned Champions of the Southern League South and West Division, just pipping Sholing to the title by 2 points in a nail-biting finish to the season. The Club was named club of the season for the South and West division and also picked up the fair play award along with the Merit Cup for the most goals scored. The Club also celebrated a golden boot award for one of the crowd favourites Mike Gosney who scored 36 goals. The Club were also very pleased to see another crowd favourite doing well and penning his first pro contract to secure a deal with Port Vale.

The highlight of the 2011/12 season was AFC Totton reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. The match, televised live on ITV was against Bristol Rovers our visitors coming out on top in convincing style. Nevertheless history was written and shall never be forgotten.

This was not the only history making event of the season - Stefan Brown made his mark in the record books by scoring the fastest FA Cup hat-trick by a substitute, scoring all 3 goals in 15 second half minutes, AFC Totton also reached the Hampshire Senior Cup final for the 3rd season in succession, losing out to 2-0 Eastleigh.

The Club narrowly missed promotion to the Conference South, but lost 4-2 at Oxford City.in the play off final after only one season at Southern Premier League level.

Season 2012/2013 saw AFC Totton consolidate their position in the Southern Premier League, their 14th position coming after a mixed bag of results, with home results disappointingly not matched by performances away from the Testwood Stadium.

The Red Insure Cup saw an early exit at the hands of Sholing, but a better run in the Hants Senior Cup ended with the scores level at 90 minutes against a strong AFC Bournemouth side, with the Stags losing out 4-2 on penalties. Very worthy of mention is the tremendous effort of the Youth side who defeated AFC Bournemouth on their own patch, after an epic 11-10 penalty victory in FA Youth Cup. Unfortunately they were defeated in the next round of the competition but the win at Bournemouth will remain in the memories of everyone who attended the match.

In the FA Cup progress was made to the 4th Qualifying Round where the Stags lost a close encounter 3-2 at home to Cambridge City, but on the way they recorded a remarkable result, defeating then Conference South side Truro City by the same score in Cornwall.

In the FA Trophy, Totton were rewarded by three home draws, beating Bideford, Gosport Borough, and Conference South Basingstoke Town before giving a fine performance at Blue Square Premier side Forest Green Rovers, only losing by a solitary goal in time added on.

The 2013/14 season saw the Stags undergo major changes, caused by previous miss-management of the Club. Forced to field mainly inexperienced youngsters in the tough surroundings of the Southern Premier League, relegation was half expected, although as the players matured, performances improved, and the dreaded drop nearly avoided. The Club has spent the last few seasons at the wrong end of the table, so with new committee, management and player squad we are looking forward to improving for the 2017/18 season.

“THE CITIZENS POST” MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome AFC Totton to Winchester for this afternoon’s New Year’s Day game. As this is the first match of 2018 I would like to wish you a very happy year. Our last home match of 2017 saw us beat Shortwood 5-1 with Pat Cox scoring his second hat-trick of the season against the Gloucestershire club, and making Oli Bailey’s goal, with Jamie Barron scoring the other goal directly from a free kick as we completed our first double of the season.

AFC Totton though are on a very good run themselves and at the time of writing were closely matched with ourselves in terms of points. Craig Feeney our leading scorer of last season has been banging in the goals for them and we do not need reminding that they won 4-1 on this ground in the league cup, a match where we rested a few players to give our younger players a chance, but that should not take anything away from AFC Totton who in a match I missed due to holiday from all accounts took their chances well.

There is plenty of links between the clubs with Craig Davis, Barry Blankley, Gareth Byres, Rob Flooks, Liam Gilbert, Adam Tomasso and Steve Hollick on the Winchester side serving both clubs as either a player or a manager, while on the other side of the coin players Craig Feeney and Stuart Mott as well as goalkeeping coach Jamie Cotton were at Winchester last season.

Like ourselves AFC Totton are a former Wessex League club, and the teams were in the same division of this competition in both 2004/05 and 2005/06 with AFC Totton joining the Southern League as Wessex League champions in 2008, two years after Winchester achieved the same. The two clubs have both represented the Wessex League in the F A Vase final, with Winchester winning in 2004 and AFC Totton being losing finalists in the 2007.

Apart from their Wessex League tile success, their appearance in the F A Vase final at Wembley, their appearance on TV in the second round proper of the F A Cup against Bristol Rovers in 2011/12 and their promotion to the Southern League Premier I remember their Wessex League Cup winning sides of 1990 and 2003. The first of these included Paul Doswell whose pace up front interested Havant who hosted the final and they ended up signing him. The second included Wayne Shaw as goalkeeper, and I think that fairly soon afterwards, Doswell signed him as manager of Eastleigh. I think it is fair to say that Doswell and Shaw are well known figures in local football, and Shaw has this season returned to today’s opponents.

However, it was not always plain sailing for them in the Wessex League. On the final day of the 1993/94 season they were favourites to be relegated with Swanage and Whitchurch the only teams they could catch. They were playing Gosport, Swanage were playing BAT and Whitchurch were playing Eastleigh. Interestingly enough Gosport, BAT and Eastleigh were at the time all managed by former AFC Totton bosses. However with AFC Totton winning their game and Whitchurch going down to a goal similar in nature to Geoff Hurst’s second goal in the 1966 World Cup final, they also only narrowly stayed up in 1996/97, finishing only three points.

The current manager is Louis Langdown and from 2011/12 to 2013/14 they played in the Southern League Premier Division reaching the playoffs in the first of these seasons. From 2009/10 to 2011/12 they reached three Hampshire Senior Cup finals, winning two of them. I know several people in the AFC Totton set-up and look forward to meeting up with some familiar faces today.

The two clubs met in the F A Cup in 2008/09 with AFC Totton emerging 3-0 winners, and they have in fact won on their last two visits to this ground, which is something we wish to amend today.

“THE CITIZENS POST” MALCOLM ON MALCOLM…

I first began to become involved with Winchester City in the 2015/16 season. Prior to that I had been Press Officer of Eastleigh from 1997 to 2014 and had been involved with the club programme for most of the period from 1989 to 1997.

However, Eastleigh changed their media arrangements when they were promoted to the National League and now they have a couple of full time media people who have a different approach to me, I have now a greater media involvement with Winchester City. I remain a season ticket holder with Eastleigh and have seen the majority of their home games as well as a couple of away ones and still attend a couple of their functions, but I do not now let anything get in the way of Winchester home games and I now compile the non-league paper for Winchester, having previously done the job with Eastleigh for 11 years.

I will review my situation again at the end of this season, but I am pleased that Dom is videoing games and interviewing the manager which is something the likes of Josh Kingsley and Jamie Graham did at Eastleigh, while Jamie Montigue (son of Eastleigh chief steward Richard Montigue) wrote excellent match reports for the website. Also on the media side of things Paul McNamara did several insightful interviews with many people and produced a book relating to the club and has now gone on to greater things as a football writer.

What pleases me in football is seeing people who are selfless in their devotion to the cause. The Winchester President Terry Bone is a true Wintonian whose association with the club begun almost 60 years ago and his devotion to the cause (ably supported by his wife Lyn) has shone through even when undergoing Chemotherapy treatment. There are other great stalwarts of this club such as John and Margaret Moody, the Malone family, Kevin Watkins, Sally Statham, David Green, Judith Towerton, Rod Youngman, Rob Conway, the Percival’s, the Elkins family, Martin Moody, Richard Pickett, Paul Murray, Steve Rainbird, Darrell Gowers, Elliott Trodd, Neil Wilson, Rhondda Thomas and her refreshment team, Ally Brown, Tony Smith, Ray Bulpitt, Matt Richbell and Mike Carter who along with the club supporters, players, football management team, physiotherapists and other helpers who make valuable contributions.

I went to every home league game last season and have every intention of repeating this during the current campaign. In fact, prior to the abolition of the Pink paper I was performing a similar role at Winchester to what I previously did at Eastleigh.

However, I do think that there are a lot of good things going on at Eastleigh. Results may not have been as good as expected, but becoming an established National League club is still a good achievement and the improvement in the facilities, in addition to the engagement with the local community are important developments.

I have only ever been involved in four non-league clubs and one of these Hounslow is effectively more. In addition to Winchester and Eastleigh I have had a long association with Clanfield (Oxon) and I usually watch them play twice a season.

I certainly have enjoyed getting to know many more people at Winchester City and it is great to see the club in the top half of the table whilst plying its’ trade in the Southern League and long may this continue.

“THE CITIZENS POST” WCFC 5-1 SHORTWOOD UNITED – MATCH REPORT

BY MALCOLM CLARKE

When Winchester beat Shortwood 4-2 on the opening day of the season Pat Cox scored a hat-trick and Oli Bailey scored the other goal. Both players matched their goal scoring exploits in this game with Jamie Barron scoring a fifth goal as Winchester completed their first double of the season. Having not played a league game for three games and not played any sort of competitive fixture for more than two weeks Winchester had virtually a full squad to select from against a team that had improved after a slow start having lost of a lot of players from the previous season, and they had recently beaten Swindon Supermarine and drawn with Bristol Manor Farm and Bideford. The Shortwood Assistant Manager is Chris Burns who made 181 football league appearances. 90 of them for Portsmouth. Winchester made three changes to the starting line-up from their victory against Evesham, with Liam Gilbert, Dan Williamson and Rob Carr coming in for Adam Tomasso, Simba Mlambo and Andy Jenkinson with Tomasso and Mlambo on the bench and Williamson playing in an unfamiliar role of the right side of midfield. Early on Liam Gilbert forced a couple of routine saves from George Burton. At the other end Shortwood captain Liam Meredith had a chance for Shortwood, but his effort was off target. Winchester captain Jamie Barron had a free kick well saved by George Burton in the Shortwood goal. Another Barron free kick led to Winchester having a goal disallowed, while Winchester full back Dan King limped off to be replaced by Adam Tomasso. Pat Cox and Joe White also had chances for their respective teams, the latter as a result of a long throw from Jordan Morris. Winchester did however take the lead in the 39th minute when Barron's free kicks finally paid dividends when he scored directly from one. Shortly before half time it was 2-0 when Barron set up Cox to score his first. Both teams had attacks early in the second half which resulted in half chances being created, but Shortwood did a goal back in the 55th minute when Joe White scored with his shot wrong footing Winchester goalkeeper Ryan Pryce. Shortwood then began to look menacing for a spell as they threatened an equalizer, but their task was made harder when Alex Kibble received a second yellow card. With the extra man Winchester forced several corners, but they got the all-important third goal in the 76th minute when Pat Cox crossed for Oli Bailey to score the third with a spectacular finish, which represented the goal of the game. With their two-goal lead restored Winchester were looking comfortable and soon afterwards Josh Harfield set up Pat Cox for his second. Winchester bought on Simba Mlambo and I K Hill and Hill helped set up Cox for his hat-trick and he has scored six times against Shortwood this season, with two hat-tricks to his name.
