The report is entitled Beyond the Crisis. We have not considered it part of our brief to offer views on how the severe crisis now gripping economies around the world might be solved. We are aware, however, that the crisis has made our work more urgent. In part, it shows how rapidly a situation can change, which illustrates the importance of adaptability. Partly, too, the crisis may mean that market growth, once it returns, will be lower than we were accus- tomed to in the pre-crisis years. This in turn underlines the importance of measures that strengthen both Sweden’s competitiveness and its ability to attract investments and skilled workers. Our report constitutes an urgent appeal to the political system and to society as a whole to give issues concerning Sweden’s competitiveness, adaptability and attractiveness greater priority. Sweden is fundamentally strong, but our own economic history shows that we are vulnerable, too. We are highly dependent on a handful of successful export companies. We must produce more companies that dare to grow. We must place greater emphasis on knowledge and expertise, since these are the most crucial produc- tion factors of all in the modern era. We must ensure that new knowledge and insights are translated more often into production in Sweden. We must have a labour market that combines security and fl exibility more than at present. We must strengthen the structures that enable Sweden to hold its own even when under pressure and strain. We must make Sweden better known in faraway countries. We must ensure that in an age of transition, those who govern Ds 2009:21 have the best possible material on which to base their de- cisions. If we fail to tackle the problems facing us, the next crisis may have an even greater impact than the present one. We must acknowledge the fact that competition in world markets is often extremely tough, as is competition in the investment and recruitment sectors. Sweden has a good chance of holding its own, however, if we play our cards right. Our mandate specifi cally concerned Sweden, but we are united in our belief that globalisation is basically good for the world as a whole. Only by joining forces can we meet the challenges that confront humanity. This applies not least to climate change. Originally, the term globalisa- tion mainly referred to the widening of markets. We are now coming to realise that it represents very much more besides. Properly handled, it can reduce poverty and hun- ger and counteract hopelessness. It enables ideas about human rights and democracy, unfettered by borders, to spread and take root in places where they have hitherto been prohibited. It can help people around the world to come together and pool their resources in pursuit of sus- tainable development on the planet we all share. An annex to this report describes the Council’s work- ing methods, activities and composition. An important part of the project consisted of some 30 expert reports com- missioned by the Council. In addition, the Council secre- tariat headed by Professor Pontus Braunerhjelm supplied a background report, based to some extent on the expert reports. As in the case of our initial report in the autumn of 2007, entitled Knowledge-Driven Growth, the fi ve ministers in the Council wish to point out that while endorsing the main tenor of this fi nal report they cannot for formal reasons commit themselves with regard to issues that will ultimate- ly be a matter for the Government to decide. Four other members of the Council have added separate statements Ds 2009:21 of opinion, and these are included at the end of the report. In the case of other members, too, there may of course be individual aspects that they have not had time to familiarise themselves with and opinions that they do not fully share. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract This article presents new research on income-based child indicators for immigrant children from 17 different national backgrounds and children of parents born in Sweden observed during the 3-year periods 1983–85, 1995–97 and 2008–10. This research examines mean household income, representation at the top of the income distribution and relative poverty differ for immigrant children from the corre- sponding levels among children with native born parents. Most of the analysis is concentrated on the second generation of immigrant children. It is shown that the relative position of immigrant children deteriorated between 1983–85 and 1995–97 when the labour market situation of immigrant parents weakened more than among native born parents. Changes thereafter were more complex. Children born in Sweden to parents from Denmark, Norway or Germany were as likely as children of native born parents to be observed at the top of the income distribution in contrast to children of parents from countries with middle or low human development. Poverty rates among immigrant children were higher among all categories of immigrant children in 2008–10 than among children of native born parents. These cross origin differences in income- based child indicators can be attributed to the reasons and qualifications parents had when they entered Sweden and the number of years since their immigration.

Governments in the US and Scandinavia have followed fundamentally different approaches to the introduction of computing and to dealing with its effects. In the US, automation has been individualistic - each individual unit of government has introduced the technology according to its own needs. For the most part, the implemented systems were small scale, have followed functional lines, have merely automated existing operations, were implemented incrementally and have evolved slowly over time. In contrast, automation in Scandinavia has been communal - systems have been designed, developed and implemented by communal data processing agencies serving an entire level of government, national or local. The systems introduced were relatively large scale, have crossed functional lines, have involved the reorganization of work, have integrated both data and work processes, and were implemented more or less simultaneously for all units or agencies of government. These differences in approach to automation have influenced each country's view of the role of government in anticipating and dealing with the effects of changes in computer technology on the public workforce.

    Check against delivery Statement of Government Policy presented by the Prime Minister, Mr Fredrik Reinfeldt, to the Swedish Riksdag on Friday, 6 October 2006 Madam/Mr Speaker, The parties that make up Alliance for Sweden – the Moderate Party, the Centre Party, the Liberal Party and the Christian Democrats – have agreed to form a government to renew Sweden. Alliance for Sweden has won the confidence of the voters to carry out the policies set forth in the Bankeryd agreement, the joint economic policy presented in the Riksdag in the spring and the political programme we agreed on in the Alliance’s election manifesto. For the first time in 25 years, the election result has laid the foundation for a stable majority government. The people of Sweden have given the Government a clear mandate. Alliance for Sweden is an alliance for all of Sweden. We intend to pursue policies for our entire country and in the interests of all its people. When possible, we will seek the broadest possible support in the Riksdag and we look for good cooperation with all who want to contribute to a better Sweden. We will be an open government that listens to all citizens. The Government sees a number of major tasks ahead. More people who are able to work and want to work must also have opportunities to support themselves by their own work, to experience the satisfaction and feeling of belonging that work confers, and to do so in secure circumstances. IFAU’s objective is to promote, support and carry out: evaluations of the effects of labour market policies, studies of the function- ing of the labour market and evaluations of the labour market effects of meas- ures within the educational system. Besides research, IFAU also works on: spreading knowledge about the activities of the institute through publications, seminars, courses, workshops and conferences; creating a library of Swedish evaluational studies; influencing the collection of data and making data easily available to researchers all over the country. IFAU also provides funding for research projects within its areas of interest. There are two fixed dates for applications every year: April 1 and November 1. Ninna Edgardh Embracing the Future: The Church of Sweden in Continuous Reformation The whole world followed the events in Lund, Sweden, on October 31, 2016, when for the first time a joint ecumenical commemoration of the Reformation took place between the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Roman-Catholic Church. A photo distributed worldwide shows Pope Francis and the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Antje Jackelén, embracing each other. The photo contains both hope and tension. The Church of Sweden tries to balance the tension between its heritage as ecumenical bridge-builder, launched already by Archbishop Nathan Söderblom a hundred years ago, and its pioneering role with regard to issues of gen- der and sexuality. These seemingly contradictory roles are hereby set into the wider context of the journey Sweden has made from the time of the Lutheran reformation up to the present. A uniform society characterised by one people and one Christian faith, has gradually transformed into a society where faith is a voluntary option. The former state church faces new demands in handling religious as well as cultural diversities. Leadership is increasingly equally shared between women and men. The Church of Sweden holds all these tensions together through the approach launched on the official website of a church in constant need of reform.
