The Short North: Then and Now On the first Saturday of every month, people from all over central Ohio flock to the Short North for Gallery Hop. This short stretch of High Street, located just north of the central downtown center of Columbus, is packed with restaurants, specialty shops, and art galleries. Music, talk, and laughter fill the air as people wander from site to site, enjoying the vibrancy and life of the area. People slip into the High Street businesses, examine the art and other knick- knacks, and maybe make a purchase or two. On beautiful spring days, downtown employees eat at the restaurants and walk up and down the High Street strip. In the summer, a group of resident oddballs have a parade of insanity through the neighborhood. In the residential neighborhoods of Victorian Village and Italian Village, located on opposite sides of High Street, there are dozens of construction projects, some recently completed, some major renovations in process, and others on the drawing board. The residents are some of the most educated and most tolerant in all of Columbus. Driving around the neighborhood, one can see all sorts of symbols of diversity: rainbow flags, American flags, Ohio State flags, and flags of the University of Michigan.

I am submitting these comments on behalf of nearly 3,000 pediatricians who are members of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. First, let me state the obvious: The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically challenged our great state and placed major hardships on nearly every member of, and institution within, our society. More than 10,000 Ohioans have lost their lives to the virus while many more have been seriously hospitalized and could face ongoing health issues. Additionally, we have seen reports showing a rise in other deaths due to suicide, drug overdose, and injury. These ‘deaths of despair’ add the toll of COVID-19 and have further traumatized our families and communities. This pandemic has created major challenges for our hospitals and public health system. Further, our businesses have been adversely impacted by state orders aimed at slowing the spread of this deadly virus. As a result, every Ohioan has been put under significant stress. Regardless of your views on the dangers of COVID- 19 or Governor DeWine’s handling of the pandemic, we all need to recognize the trauma and strain placed upon our fellow Ohioans.

The Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association was established in 1953 and is the only non-profit association serving over 3,700 of Ohio's active Standardbred horse owners, breeders, trainers, drivers and fans who participate in the sport of standardbred racing in the Buckeye State at four commercial racetracks and sixty-six racing County Fairs. The mission of the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association is to preserve, protect, promote and serve the entire Standardbred industry in Ohio and beyond. The Association provides direct and substantial fiscal support to all fairs racing or not, by supplementing the live horseracing tax generated Ohio Fairs Fund monies that are distributed. The direct support the Association provides follows the same codified formula provided-for in RC. 3769.082 and 3769.0811. Including 2020, Ohio’s Horsemen have contributed more than $26 million since 2015 in support of Ohio’s sixty-six racing Fairs via capital improvements grants, stakes purses, signature race grants, on- track insurance, and the Little Brown Jug sponsorship. In addition to providing on-track representatives at each of the four extended pari-mutuel harness racetracks in Ohio, the Association provides support for twenty-one of the Buckeye State's 66 Racing Fairs with the Ohio Fair Racing Conference.

    he aspirations and accomplishments of a state are often reflected in the Tpublic buildings it conceives and constructs. A state capitol is not only a place where important government functions are performed, but it is often a focal point of civic pride. Ohio has been fortunate to have beautiful and durable building stones, excellent clays and shales to make brick, and skilled masons to construct statehouses that embody the spirit of Ohio’s citizens. In the more than 200-year history of Ohio, four statehouses have been erected that represented the vision of Ohio’s future. Ohio’s First Statehouse in Chillicothe A very early use of Ohio stone for building purposes occurred in 1800, when construction began on the first statehouse in Chillicothe, located approximately 45 miles south of Columbus in Ross County. Chillicothe was chosen as Ohio’s first capital because of its central location on two 2 011 important early transportation corridors, Zane’s Trace and the Scioto River; because it was the largest city in the state at the By Mark E. The two-story stone building is believed to be the first public, stone structure erected in the North-west Territories. Major William Rutledge, a Revolutionary War veteran, supervised masonry work on the square, hipped roof and cupola-style building. Ohio’s first constitution was written there in 1802, and the building served as state capitol from 1803 to 1810 and again from 1812 to 1816, when the capital was temporarily relocated from Zanesville.

    AS PREPARED ADDRESS TO OHIO OHIO GOVERNOR MIKE DEWINE THE OHIO STATEHOUSE COLUMBUS, OH MAY 12, 2021 PANDEMIC HISTORY Good evening. In March of 2020, we faced tremendous unknowns as the first Coronavirus case was confirmed in our state. We didn’t know how quickly it would spread. We didn’t know the best way to test for it -- or how to treat it. We didn’t know if it would over-run our healthcare system. And, we certainly did not know the enormity of the impact it would ultimately have on all our lives. What we did know is that Ohioans are strong, caring, and resilient -- and that we would be in this together. Ohioans dug deep. You showed grit, determination -- and great compassion. Our exhausted and beleaguered nurses and healthcare workers acted so heroically. Ohioans encouraged each other and looked out for each other -- from flying the American flag, to kids creating heartfelt chalk drawings on driveways reminding us to do our part, to our National Guard members helping at food banks. Ohio’s greatest natural and economic resource is -- and always has been -- our people. Early in this pandemic, I knew we would save our economy only by first saving lives. And, by staying apart in those early months, Ohioans actually came together -- saving countless lives. And then -- the vaccine arrived! I will never forget that immense feeling of joy and relief as early on a cold, December morning, Fran and I watched a delivery truck bring the first precious doses of vaccine to Ohio. 1 At first, demand far outstripped supply.
