Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathemacs (STEM) Opportunity On Thursday 23rd March 2017, Bathurst High aended the University of Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge held at Charles Sturt University for Year 10 students from a range of schools across the Central West region. Around 256 students aended on the day, with a maximum of 32 from any one school. The students experienced a range of problem solving acvies (eight in total) for which they were provided with some basic materials and then encouraged to solve the problem as a group. The day turned out to be a very excing day with our school team leading all other schools at the lunch break.

The Challenge has been run in other centres in NSW with the support of local Rotary clubs. Rotary provided many volunteers on the day to assist students to complete the various exercises. The last few hours of the compeon provided many nervous moments for our students as their final challenge was to construct a bridge from some basic materials which needed to hold various vehicle weights when aempng to cross the bridge.

It was a great day and an outstanding result for our students who finished third overall when the final points were tallied. Congratulaons to all students who aended and to the staff from Bathurst High Campus. Well done to Mrs Rosie Weithaler – Head Teacher Science for organising this exceponal learning experience which allowed our students to work as a producve team.

Page 2 Denison College of Secondary Education—Bathurst High Campus—www.bathurst-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Emergency Evacuaon Procedures Revisited

All schools are required to pracse all Workplace, Health and Safety procedures each year and last week all students were required to evacuate the building during one of our mandatory emergency evacuaon drills. The purpose of the drill was to remind all students, staff, visitors and contractors of our school evacuaon procedures. This event is even more important for our new students in Year 7 and new staff. The following provides a snapshot of some of the important procedures during an evacuaon. When it is necessary to Evacuate the school an alarm will sound as follows ‐ Connuous ringing of the bell. In the event of a power failure, a portable siren kept in the administraon area will be used as above as well as a broadcast message via the telephone system stang evacuaon. All personnel to implement procedures.

When there is a connuous ringing bell ‐ The General Assistant immediately unlocks the gates on Keppel Street. General Assistant then unlocks Piper Street gate. The Deputy Chief Warden (DP Senior School) delegates the opening of the gates on Peel St for emergency vehicle access if required. Designated SASS staff prints off rolls for that period. The SAM checks the admin area including the Common Room, offices, toilets and sick bay. Then evacuates to the Assembly Area. The SAM and two other designated SAOs go to the front gate and the Hall gate to prevent anyone entering the school. One designated SAO will take the sign on book, the guest book and the Roll Call rolls and absentee list to the oval. These are shown to the DP Senior School to ensure all are accounted for. Floor Wardens (Head Teachers) check their areas and ensure calm evacuaon. As soon as the area is checked, Floor Wardens immediately evacuate to the assembly area.

Evacuaon During a Teaching Period ‐ Teachers and students ‐ Teachers instruct students to pick up their bags, line up at the door and then calmly walk their class to the nearest safe exit closest to the street. Tell students they will line up in class groups in faculty areas at the Assembly point. Teachers take their roll with them. Teachers close doors behind them – DO NOT LOCK. Teachers instruct students to make sure their mobile phones are off. Teachers walk their class out the nearest gate and along the outside footpath to the side gate on Keppel St. then walk down to the back of the oval. PE classes outside go directly to the oval via the path. Teachers line students up in their class group. Signs are on the back fence to show faculty areas.

Evacuaon During a Break ‐ All students and teachers who are outside are to proceed to the assembly area at the back of the oval via the internal path and terrace steps, unless otherwise directed. All personnel inside the buildings are to follow the procedures listed above. TAS staffroom Boom Floor teachers and PE teachers should assist on the oval and direct students as they arrive. Students are to line up in their Roll Call Groups. If the evacuaon occurs during Year Assembly, teachers at the assembly will walk students to the Evacuaon Assembly Area.

Page 3 Denison College of Secondary Education—Bathurst High Campus—www.bathurst-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Outstanding Student Success – Congratulaons Felicity!

A few weeks ago Felicity Hickey in Year 11 was honoured by the Internaonal Sports Karate Associaon (ISKA) for her outstanding success in maral arts throughout the past twelve months. Felicity won two Naonal Titles in 2016 and was ranked 1st in five divisions she had competed in over the year. Recently Felicity competed in the Australian Karate Federaon (AKF) Sydney Cup where she placed 2nd in sparring. AKF is the recognised organisaon for the Olympics and both Felicity and Taylor (older sister and former vice captain at BHS in 2015) returned to Sydney last weekend to again excel in their sparring divisions. Their success was recognised by their selecon in the official Australian Karate Federaon state team to compete at the naonal tles. This will translate to compulsory training with the squad a least once per month along with their normal compeons. Outstanding success for two talented sisters. Well done to the Hickey family and all the very best in future compeons. Our school community will keep an eye out in future Olympics! Students Represent at the Centenary of Anzac Soil Collecon Ceremony

On Monday 27th March 2017 many students from across the Bathurst Network aended a very important Centenary of Anzac Celebraon at the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon. This is a state‐wide project to collect 1,699 soil samples from the towns, suburbs and localies where the men and women of NSW enlisted for service in the First World War. Bathurst was the first of these locaons to feature in the project. The locaons and soil samples will be featured in the Hall of Service as part of the permanent developments being undertaken in the Anzac Memorial. The NSW Government and Trustees of the Anzac Memorial are undertaking a major refurbishment of the Hyde Park Memorial as part of NSW’s commemoraon of the Centenary of Anzac. This project was made possible by a $20.3 million contribuon from the NSW Government and a further $19.6 million from the Commonwealth’s Anzac Centenary Public Fund. The City of Sydney has spent $3.4 million upgrading the exisng Pool of Reflecon and an addional $4.1 million on associated works in Hyde Park around the Memorial Precinct. Fiona Hall’s artwork, within the new Hall of Service, will display the names of the towns, suburbs and selements across NSW where men and women enlisted from for the First World War. Memorial visitors will enter the new Hall of Service via a walkway through a symbolic water cascade. The Hall will funcon as a greeng and orientaon space for the public, including tour groups and school children; and as a venue for ceremonies and funcons, flowing onto exhibion galleries and educaon facilies. On the northern edge of the Hall of Service, opposite the walkway, a set of stairs and travellators will take visitors to the ground floor of the Anzac Memorial and the Hall of Silence, where the sculpture Sacrifice stands. The walls in the Hall of Service will display the names of the towns, suburbs and selements across NSW where men and women enlisted for the First World War. The list of names encapsulates our early colonial history, and registers the country’s long me indigenous presence. It displays the geographical reach of the call to serve, and signals the willingness and enthusiasm of so many from diverse regions who answered the call to join the War. Alongside each place name will be displayed a sample of soil, collected from each locale.

Outstanding Year 7 Camp at Lake Burrendong

During Week 8 more than 220 students travelled to Lake Burrendong over three days to enjoy many acvies as part of the annual Year 7 Camp. Students in Year 7 were supported by around twenty Year 11 peer support leaders who were allocated teams to support throughout the camp. Aer three fun filled days engaging in many challenges and excing acvies the students arrived home all very red! Massive thanks to the Year 7 Advisors – Mrs. Alison Diamond and Mr. John Millan for all their hard work in organising and assisng students throughout the camp.

Special menon to the other 9 staff, led by Miss Katrina Ferris who aended the camp for the three days. I certainly enjoyed aending, geng to know the Year 7 students in a different learning environment and having fun, camping out at night. There were many photos and videos taken as students engaged in Rock Climbing, Flying Fox, Canoeing, Cross Country Grass Skiing, Ra Building, Archery, BMX Riding, Leap of Faith, Star Wars Games, Giant Water Slide, Mini Olympics, Crate Stacking and Team Building exercises. Many new friendships were developed and staff all learnt new things about our students. Well done to all the students and staff for an awesome camp!

Page 5 Denison College of Secondary Education—Bathurst High Campus—www.bathurst-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Student Aendance at School is Compulsory

Attendance every day that the school is open for instruction is a legal requirement and a major responsibility of parents/carers. Do not keep your child away from school for the following rea- sons as they are not considered to be acceptable:

Family Holidays (no longer exempt)

Birthdays

Shopping

Minding other children

For routine check-ups or care such as hair cuts

Minor family events

Medical and other health appointments for your child with specialists such as dentists or doctors should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays

Regular appointments (i.e. private swimming or music lessons during school time) which require students to leave school early

It is important to understand that the Department may take further action where children of com- pulsory school age (6-17) have recurring numbers of unexplained or unacceptable absences from school. Some of the following actions may be undertaken.

Attendance meetings and compulsory attendance conferences - Parents (and sometimes their child) can be asked to go to a meeting with school personnel and other regional officers. The aim of the meeting is to help identify strategies to support the child and family. Other agencies may also be invited along to help, if parents agree.

If the school and other regional officers have tried to help improve a child’s attendance, without success, parents (and sometimes their child) can be asked to go to a compulsory attendance conference. The conference will be run by a trained conference convenor. The aim of the con- ference is for the school, parents/child and other identified agencies (“the parties”) to further identify the issues which are impacting on a child’s attendance.

The outcome of a compulsory attendance conference is for the parties to agree to undertake certain actions to improve the child’s attendance. These actions are written in the form of un- dertakings.

Applications to the Children’s Court – A Compulsory Schooling Order. Legal compliance can be sought through an application to the Children’s Court for a Compulsory Schooling Order. The aim is to assist a family and/or child to address the issues which are preventing satisfactory school attendance but has the added enforcement of a Court’s powers.

Prosecution in the Local Court - If all attempts by schools and regional support staff fail to im- prove a student’s attendance, action can be taken in the Local Court and the result can be fines up to a maximum of $11,000.

On Monday 13th March, a record 10 golfers from Bathurst High Campus travelled on a mini‐bus to compete in the Western Region Golf Championships in Cowra. The day featured an individual strokeplay event and an ambrose event for keen golfers without an official club handicap. Players were faced with cold, wet and windy condions but all are to be commended for braving the weather on the day and playing on.

Bathurst High enjoyed many outstanding results on the day with Ben Mackey finishing second in the strokeplay event and Cameron Jackson (Year 7)finishing equal third in the strokeplay. This is a parcularly outstanding result for Cameron in his first year of High School. Cameron has now given himself a chance of being selected in the

Western Region team and selectors will be watching his results closely over the coming month. Ben Mackey is sll alive in the Western Matchplay championships also and will be looking to go one beer next me he plays the winner of the Strokeplay event. Ben has been playing some outstanding golf with several Par rounds at Bathurst Golf Club in recent mes and he has cemented his posion in the Western Region team. He is also undefeated playing A Grade Pennants for Bathurst Golf Club this year. Both boys are looking forward to the NSW CHS golf event being held in Forster during May.

Bathurst High dominated the Ambrose event, finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th. Charlie Campbell and Ben Roffe played consistent golf and combined well to win the event by one shot from Emma Jackson and Mitchell Lamb (Year 7), Nathan Ward and Noah Griffiths finished 4th with Max Currie and Reilly Mitchell taking 5th. It was pleasing to see a large number of Ambrose teams from schools across the Western Region. It was also great to see two female golfers on the day (including our own Emma Jackson) and hopefully this number will connue to grow in the future. Mitchell Lamb is another Year 7 student that is showing much interest and ability in this great game of Golf. We look forward to seeing Mitchell connue to grow and develop his game.

It was great to see so many players compeng in this event and we hope that Golf connues to grow at Bathurst High. It is a testament to the lessons being conducted in PE lessons ulising the Jack Newton Junior Golf Kits and the opon of Golf as an out of school sport for Years 7‐10. Medals at State Tennis Championships

The NSW Combined High Schools Tennis Championships were held in Parramaa from Tuesday 28th February to Friday 3rd March. Six students from the Western Region parcipated in the Championships, including: Samantha Burrow, Sophie McCauley, Ben Tullier and Jacob Bicanic from Bathurst High. Others parcipang were Miranda Swi from Lithgow High and Isabella Mason from West Wyalong. The Championships feature Open Singles, 15’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles. These events feature players from across the State and the Open Singles also act as a selecon trial for the All School Championships and Pizzey Cup trials (for NSW All Schools team).

Despite plenty of rain being forecast the tournament was able to complete most events. Following her success of a Bronze Medal in Girl’s Doubles last year, Sophie McCauley returned this year despite limited preparaon in terms of match pracce. Sophie exited the Open Singles in the first round but improved throughout the week and was able to make the quarter finals of the Girl’s doubles with Miranda Swi. The quarter final was a close match with the girls narrowly beaten in a e‐break. Jacob played the Open event for the first me this year and following a first round defeat in the open draw, made the second round of the consolaon singles and he also competed in boy’s doubles. Ben Tullier had a strong win in the first round of the Open Boy’s Singles and following a second round exit in this draw, he also competed in the consolaon singles, boy’s doubles and mixed doubles. Isabella Mason from West Wyalong was able to make the final 16 of the Open Girl’s singles and will now compete in the All Schools Championships and Pizzey Cup trials.

Sam Burrow was compeng for the fourth year straight in these championships and had an outstanding week. Sam won her first round of the open draw before being beaten narrowly in the second round. Following this, she qualified for the Open Plate Singles and progressed to the semi‐finals with convincing 6‐1, 6‐1 and 6‐0 wins. Following a closely fought 4‐6 loss in the semi’s, Sam bounced back to win her bronze medal playoff match 7‐5. I was fortunate enough to see this match and Sam was really able to hold her nerve during key points at the end of the match. Sam backed this up with another Bronze medal playoff win in the Girl’s Doubles. An outstanding effort to win two medals in a state‐wide compeon.

Congratulaons to all players and a big thank‐you to all parents that assisted with transport and support.

Bathurst High boys were up against Canowindra in round three and this was a convincing 72‐10 win and they displayed excellent defence and offensive transion. The girls played Orange High School in a crossover game. Orange proved to be strong compeon and it wasn't unl the second half that Bathurst were able to finish with consistency and begin extending their lead. They were victorious in a low scoring game 30‐11.

The boys had a tough opponent in the final round of the day and were chasing their first appearance in Round two (final four teams) of the Western Region Knockout in four years. This was a high intensity game played against some the best players in country. It remained a close margin throughout the game and came down to the final minutes of play. A couple of defensive stops from Orange and conversions at the other end resulted in a 36‐38 defeat.

Both teams should be extremely proud of how they conducted themselves and competed on the day. The opens girls’ basketball team will compete in Round 2 of the Western Region Knockout on Monday 20th March. We wish them all the best in what will be an excing day of compeon.

Western Region Knockout – Round 2

On Monday the 20th March, the Opens Girls Basketball team competed in the Western Region Final Four Knockout. This was a day of compeve basketball and provided the girls with a great opportunity to develop their skills and compete against quality opposion. The girls faced Lithgow High School in the opening game and fought hard to stay in the match unl the last minutes. The final result was 39‐42.

The girls faced Dubbo College in the next round and again, it was another close match. A late scoring run by Dubbo saw them extend a lead in the final minutes and close out the game. The final game of the day was played against . It was their first appearance in the finals in 22 years. Bathurst came from behind to take the lead early in the third quarter. Defensive pressure, leading to fast break points shied momentum and Bathurst were able to maintain a lead unl the end. The final result was 46‐35.

Amy Powell and Olivia Doble were stand out performers throughout the day and every student played a valuable role. The girls again displayed excellent sportsmanship and represented the school to a high standard.

I would like to congratulate Amy Powell and Olivia Doble on their selecon in the Western Region Basketball team and wish them the best of luck at the Combined High School Tournament in May.

Open Girls Netball

On Thursday the 23rd of March, the Open’s Netball Team went to Orange to parcipate in the Western Divisional Day. The girls started the day off posively with a win against Canobolas Rural Technology High School, 14‐ 7. At the start of the game, Bethany Turnbull and Olivia Flood were able to get a number of intercepts, helping us to take an early lead. In our second game, we faced the Orange High 2 team. Excellent pressure from our defence, Sienna Cheever, Olivia Doble and Beth McArthur, forced Orange to make numerous errors. The girls excellent team work throughout the game allowed them to move the ball up the court with ease and convert turnovers into points. We secured our second win, 14‐8. Our third and toughest game for the day was against Cowra High School. The girls stepped onto the court confidently but Cowra were able to get a couple of intercepts, which lead to them taking an early lead. Going into half me, we were down, 4‐ 6. The girls did well not to drop their heads and came out stronger in the second half! Exceponal accuracy in the shoong circle from Lauren Casani and Amy Powell meant the score was levelled within minutes of half me. Zara Sheader did an outstanding job bringing the ball up the court, despite her opposion being significantly larger and very rough. At full me, the game was even at 12‐all. The girls finished equal first in their pool, meaning that overall posions were determined on a countback. Unfortunately, Cowra defeated Orange and Canobolas by a larger margin than us, meaning we finished in second posion. While this was a disappoinng result for the girls, they took it in their stride and walked on the court for their playoff game ready to have some fun! Tegan Bush and Hannah Smith shone in defence against Henry Lawson, both intercepng the ball and forcing several turnovers throughout the game. Although it wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for on the day, the team is feeling posive and looking forward to stepping on the court again come Astley Cup. Good luck to Amy Powell, Olivia Flood and Beth McArthur who are aending the second‐round trials for the Western CHS Netball team on Thursday March 30. A special menon must go to Lily Cole, who aended the Western Divisional Day to umpire. Her confidence and integrity throughout the day was brilliant and should be commended.

Thank you again to all the girls for a fantasc day!

An early cross from Niamh McAdam allowed Lauren Clemens to score the first goal of the match. Going in to half me the girls were leading 1‐0 however some strong plays from Orange saw two goals scored in the later parts of the second half. Despite being 2‐1 down the girls connued to play out the rest of the match in high spirits and displayed great sportsmanship.

The Bathurst High Open Football team suffer a thrilling Round one loss to Orange High. Bathurst go down in a thrilling penalty shootout 6‐5. Aer an opening twenty minutes where both teams struggled for supremacy it was Orange that opened up the scoring. And what a goal it was. A long range effort gave the Bathurst goalkeeper no chance. The remainder of the first half saw both teams trying to gain the upper hand.

The second half saw the Bathurst team come out with more fight and it wasn’t long before we gained the upper hand. A goal to Damian Mays from a Ryan Rooke corner gave the Bathurst side a well‐deserved equaliser, and it wasn’t long aer that the Bathurst team went ahead. A Penalty shout by the Bathurst team gave Bathurst High the opportunity to go 2‐1 ahead. Tom Rooke made no mistakes sending the Orange goalkeeper the wrong way. Bathurst High were now 2‐1 ahead with less than 10‐ minutes to play. For the last 10 minutes Orange piled on the pressure and with the last kick of the game Orange equalised sending the game into extra me.

Extra me came and went with neither side able to create a winning move.

Penales Orange took the early advantage as Bathurst missed their opening penalty. Orange High missed their third penalty making the score 3‐3 with only a few penales to be taken by each team. Unfortunately for the Bathurst High team it was the Orange team that held their nerve and recorded a 6‐5 penalty shootout victory.

Congratulaons to both teams on a great game played in the correct spirit.

Preliminary Geography Term One

Term One in the Preliminary syllabus covers extremely relevant and praccal aspects of our environ‐ ment. We discuss Biophysical Interacons between the four environmental spheres, the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. This term we have looked at the differing microclimates located at different locaons within the school grounds and the reasons behind this. We have also conducted soil tesng around the school to discover the pH levels, which by the way are prey good! FYI the oval has a pH of 5, circular drive 7 and the back field was 6.5. We have also walked down to the Macquarie River to conduct pH water tesng as well as hardness, bromine, chlorine… The class also did further soil tesng around differing locaons at the river, which again turned out with a posive reading.

We have some commied and knowledgeable geographers in our Preliminary Geography class for 2017 which is excellent to see. Connue the fantasc work and dedicated atude for learning inside and outside the classroom!
