Flea beetles (Alticinae) are characterized by an extraordinary jumping apparatus in the usually greatly expanded femur of their hind legs that separates them from the related Galerucinae. Here, we examine the evolution of this trait using phylogenetic analysis and a time-calibrated tree from mitochondrial (rrnL and cox1) and nuclear (small subunits and large subunits) genes, as well as morphometrics of femora using elliptic Fourier analysis. The phylogeny strongly supports multiple independent origins of the metafemoral spring and therefore rejects the monophyly of Alticinae, as defined by this trait. Geometric outline analysis of femora shows the great plasticity of this structure and its correlation with the type and diversity of the metafemoral springs. The recognition of convergence in jumping apparatus now resolves the long-standing difficulties of Galerucinae–Alticinae classification, and cautions against the value of trait complexity as a measure of taxonomic significance. -

A list of 1298 species and 172 genera of Chrysomelidae from the subfamily Galerucinae (sensu stricto) with the males having at least one form of secondary sexual characteristic (SSC) is presented. The number of species amounts to 24% of the total Galerucinae presently known from all over the world—a very significant amount. The SSCs comprise various types of modified structures found on all parts of the body—head, thorax, and abdomen. They are not variable but species specific. Illustrations from selected 87 species that include 84 images and 15 line drawings showing various types of SSC are provided. The amazing array of SSCs from the Galerucinae offers a large and taxonomically diverse set of data that are not comparable with other subfamilies in the Chrysomelidae and may be useful in phylogenetic analysis of the family. -

Lee and Bezděk Zoological Studies 2013, 52:9 http://www.zoologicalstudies.com/content/52/1/9 RESEARCH Open Access The genus Cneorane Baly, 1865 from Taiwan (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae), with notes on sexual dimorphism and its life history Chi-Feng Lee1* and Jan Bezděk2 Abstract Background: Three species of the genus Cneorane Baly, 1865 are recorded originally from Taiwan: C. femoralis Jacoby, 1888, C. rugulipennis (Baly, 1886), and C. violaceipennis Allard, 1889. Results: The result indicates that C. elegans Baly, 1874 (= C. rufipes Weise, 1889, syn. nov. and C. cyanipennis Chûjô, 1938, syn. nov.), C. violaceipennis Allard, 1889 (= C. fokiensis Weise, 1922, syn. nov.), and C. rugulipennis Baly, 1886 (= C. femoralis Jacoby, 1888, syn. nov. and C. formosana Weise, 1922) are recognized. Cneorane violaceipennis, misidentified as C. elegans for more than 100 years, is redefined and recorded from Taiwan for the first time. Sexually dimorphic characters and diagnostic ones for each species are addressed. The life histories of Cneorane species are noted. Lectotypes are designated for C. violaceipennis Allard, 1889, C. femoralis Jacoby, 1888, and C. cyanipennis Chûjô, 1938. Conclusions: The present state of taxonomic study on this genus is insufficient. However, it can be improved if variable characters are detected and sexually dimorphic characters are found by examining sufficient material. Four species, including one new, are treated: Luperogala clermonti (LABOISSIÈRE, 1929) (Vietnam, Laos), L. mirabilis MEDVEDEV & SAMODERZHENKOV, 1989 (Vietnam), L. malayana (MEDVEDEV, 2004) (comb. nov., from Liroetis, Peninsular Malaysia) and L. mohamedsaidi sp. nov. (Borneo). Luperogala clermonti is recorded for the first time from Laos and excluded from fauna of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Primary type specimens of all species were examined. Photographs and drawings of habitus, male abdomen, last ventrite of the female, claws and male and female genitalia are presented for all species. A key to the species is provided. Recently, WarchałoWski (2008) published a description of the male of Liroetis clermonti (LABOISSIÈRE, 1929). Based on peculiar structure of aedeagus he also doubted its position in Liroetis. Bezděk (2012) found Liroetis clermonti and Luperogala paradoxa conspecific and synonymized them. -

The external female genitalia within the superfamily Chrysomeloidea can be divided into a cerambycid type and a chrysomelid type. The comparative study of external female genitalia shows Megalopodidae is more closely related to the family Cerambycidae than to the family Chrysomelidae s.l. Among five subfamilies of Cerambycidae we studied, the subfamily Lamiinae is most closely allied to Megalopodidae. -
