The Newtowne Players will hold open auditions Thursday and Friday, Jan. 12-13 from 6:30-9:00 p.m for 's award-winning comedy, Lend Me A Tenor. Auditions will also be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 12:30 until 3:00 p.m.

Auditions will be at Three Notch Theatre, across from the post office in Lexington Park. Mr. Bill Farrar will direct this production, which runs March 3-12.

Assistance is also needed for set construction and decorating, stage management, sound, lighting and running crews.

Lend Me A Tenor is the story of a civic opera company that snared the world-renowned tenor, Tito Merelli, for a gala fundraiser. Through an unfortunate mix-up, Mr. Merelli's wife leaves him, he is mistaken for dead and someone else prepares to play the role of Otello.

Later complications include the reappearance of the original lead now very much alive and ready to play his part! As in any good farce, misunderstandings rule and the action gets wild as confusion and desperation drive the opera manager, his assistant, the leading lady and all involved to their wits' end before reaching a raucous conclusion.

The script calls for eight characters:

Tito Merelli... a world famous tenor, known also to his fans as Il Stupendo

Maria.... his wife

Saunders...general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company

Max...assistant to Saunders

Maggie...Max's girlfriend (and Saunders' daughter)

Bellhop.... a bellhop

Diana.... a soprano (Tito's leading lady)

Julia...chairperson of the Opera Guild

Lend Me a Tenor received two , four Drama Desk and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. The play was a sensation in London and was nominated for an Olivier Award. USA Today labeled it, “Uproarious! Hysterical!”

No prepared pieces are required for auditions. Some roles require a modicum of singing ability. If you have questions or need more information, call 301-737-5447 to leave a message for the production team or visit our web site at www.newtowneplayers.com
