LEARNING IN THE MOUNTAINS OF KRAKONOŠ According to folklore, Krakonoš has been the guardian of the mountains and the surrounding district of Semily, in the North Eastern part of the Czech Republic, for many centuries. Apart from dictating the weather, this wise old man has watched over the local people, ensuring good things happen to those who are kind, and punishing those who are bad. With such a well-known and emblematic figure, it is hardly surprising that Krakonoš has been chosen to represent Semily's EQUAL project, Facilitation of Lifelong Education in Rural Conditions: "If Krakonoš cannot come down from the mountain to a computer, why not bring the computer to him!" This slogan captures perfectly the essence of the project: to bring learning opportunities directly to people living in remote, rural locations, people who have been severely affected by acute structural changes that have occurred across the Czech Republic in recent times. Prior to the 1990s, Semily district was traditionally based on agriculture and the textile industry. However, since that time, the opening up of markets and increased exposure to global competition, particularly from China, has led to the rapid decline of this thriving economy. And what is now left is a region in a state of transformation, having to adapt in order to remain a prosperous place to work and live. But this transformation has not been easy: local people have lacked the skills and knowledge to take on new jobs in emerging sectors, such as tourism; younger and more qualified people have been moving to nearby towns and cities; more vulnerable and less mobile populations have been left behind or at risk of exclusion, including women with childcare responsibilities, the over 50s, people with disabilities, the low-skilled and those laid-off from work; Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have not been fully embraced owing to their high cost and accessibility; and limited public transport services and infrastructure have formed a major barrier to accessing work and learning opportunities. -

It tries to find and map differences in geographical (spatial) distribution of several types of such political civil activities and to determine some key geographical or geographi- cally distributed factors with an impact on it. -

CHARACTERISTIC OF THE REGION The Liberecký Region comprises of the Česká Lípa, Jablonec nad Nisou, Liberec, and Semily Districts. From 1 January 2003, there are 10 administrative districts of the municipalities with extended competence (3rd level municipalities) and within them 21 territorial districts of municipalities with commissioned local authority (2nd level municipalities) on its territory. The Region is situated in the north of the Czech Republic. The territory includes northern part of the Česká kotlina basin, Jizerské hory (the Jizera Mountains), western part of Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains) including their foothills and eastern part of Lužické hory (the Lužice Mountains). The northern part of the region is bordering the Federal Republic of Germany in the length of 22.7 km and Poland in the length of 133.5 km. In the east, the Region neighbours the Královéhradecký Region, in the south the St ředo český Region, and in the west the Ústecký Region. Current Distributional Status of Rodents in the Czech Republic (Rodentia) Aktuální Stav Poznání Výskytu Hlodavců V České Republice (Rodentia)
Lynx, n. s. (Praha), 42: 5–82 (2011). ISSN 0024-7774 (print), 1804-6460 (online) Current distributional status of rodents in the Czech Republic (Rodentia) Aktuální stav poznání výskytu hlodavců v České republice (Rodentia) Miloš ANDĚRA Department of Zoology, National Museum (Natural History), Václavské nám. 68, CZ–115 79 Praha 1, Czech Republic; [email protected] received on 24 November 2011 Abstract. over 30,000 data records were used to compile updated maps of the distribution of 24 rodent species of seven families (Castoridae, Sciuridae, Gliridae, Cricetidae, Muridae, Dipodidae, and Myo- castoridae) over the territory of the Czech Republic. The hitherto known distribution patterns have been confirmed in most of the species, either its range extends all over the territory, or they have a character of regional occurrence (Castor fiber, Spermophilus citellus, Glis glis, Eliomys quercinus, Dryomys nitedula, Cricetus cricetus, Microtus agrestis, M. subterraneus, Apodemus agrarius, A. uralensis, Sicista betulina and Myocastor coypus). Data obtained on some species tend to suggest more or less expansion of their sub-ranges in central Europe (Castor fiber, Apodemus agrarius, Myocastor coypus). on the other hand, the present records of Spermophilus citellus indicate continuing population retreat of the species (abun- dance and distribution range as well). In addition, the data on the occurrence of each rodent species were subjected to hypsometric analysis. Key words. Rodents, distributional status, Czech Republic. INTRoDUCTIoN The present paper is a continuation of the previous summary of the current distributional status of insectivores in the territory of the Czech Republic (Anděra 2010). Data on the occurrence of all 24 rodent species obtained over the last decade are summarised together with updated maps and analysis of the altitudinal distribution of their localities.
