The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. Fresh Dressed
PRESENTS FRESH DRESSED A CNN FILMS PRODUCTION WORLD PREMIERE – DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE Running Time: 82 Minutes Sales Contact: Dogwoof Ana Vicente – Head of Theatrical Sales Tel: 02072536244 [email protected] 1 SYNOPSIS With funky, fat-laced Adidas, Kangol hats, and Cazal shades, a totally original look was born— Fresh—and it came from the black and brown side of town where another cultural force was revving up in the streets to take the world by storm. Hip-hop, and its aspirational relationship to fashion, would become such a force on the market that Tommy Hilfiger, in an effort to associate their brand with the cultural swell, would drive through the streets and hand out free clothing to kids on the corner. Fresh Dressed is a fascinating, fun-to-watch chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion, and the hustle that brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from Orchard Street to high fashion's catwalks and Middle America shopping malls. Reaching deep to Southern plantation culture, the Black church, and Little Richard, director Sacha Jenkins' music-drenched history draws from a rich mix of archival materials and in-depth interviews with rappers, designers, and other industry insiders, such as Pharrell Williams, Damon Dash, Karl Kani, Kanye West, Nasir Jones, and André Leon Talley. The result is a passionate telling of how the reach for freedom of expression and a better life by a culture that refused to be squashed, would, through sheer originality and swagger, take over the mainstream. 2 ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS SACHA JENKINS – Director Sacha Jenkins, a native New Yorker, published his first magazine—Graphic Scenes & X-Plicit Language (a ‘zine about the graffiti subculture)—at age 17. -

Lord of Love Lutheran Church ELCA
Lord of Love Lutheran Church Good Friday April 2, 2021 7:00 p.m. Tonight’s worship service is a Tenebrae service which means it focuses on the darkness and shadows lengthening as we recall the pain and suffering of our Lord as his life in the flesh came to an end, and his body was laid to rest. So as we recall this solemn story, we will be extinguishing the candles and light around us. When the story ends, so will the candlelight have been extinguished, and we will leave in silence. Our Gathering Announcements Song of the Suffering Servant – Isaiah 53:4-9 Gathering Hymn: “Oh, Love, How Deep” ELW 322 (v. 1, 4, 5) Prayer of the Day P:Let us pray. Almighty God, look with loving mercy on your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and to be given over to the hands of sinners, and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now, forever and ever. Amen. The Passion of our Lord According to St. John 2 Choir: “How Can It Be” arr. Lloyd Larson The Garden – John 18:1-11 First candle is extinguished. Prayer: Almighty and eternal God, when life is questioned, threatened, or we find ourselves wondering what to do next, help us to call upon our Savior, Jesus Christ, to save us and guide us, and point the way in which we are to follow. Remembering Jesus in wake of what lay ahead of him, we ponder many things about what is to come for us as well. -

Ministry of the Word At the appointed time, a lector/reader will enact the grand narrative of our faith by reading from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the letters of Paul, and the Gospels. We believe the proclamation of these readings not only recalls the mighty acts of God, thereby serving as a reminder of who and whose we are, but also serves to constitute a new and right spirit within us, shaping and molding us to live authentically in light of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through the telling of this story, the liturgy serves to invite us into this sacred drama by simply listening to the proclamation of God’s divine narrative that comes to us in poetry, prose, and song, or by following along on the separately printed scriptural readings found on the back of your bulletin cover. -

AS WE GATHER All Enter the Church in SILENCE
AS WE GATHER Why has God become man? Why does God have flesh? Why does God have a heart that beats, lungs that breathe, a brain with synapses that fire? For this: to die. His heart beats so that it can stop beating. His lungs draw in breaths and exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide so that they can fill with fluid and stop taking in breath. His brain conducts an electro-chemical symphony so that it can stop abruptly before the final act. His eyes see so that they can be blind. His ears hear so they can be deaf. His hands work so they can be pinned to a wooden cross. His blood courses through His veins so it can flow in rivulets down the post of a torture device and leave a crimson stain in the dirt at a place named “Skull.” God is man so that He can die. For you. All enter the church in SILENCE (Please STAND) VERSICLES P: O Lord, open my lips. C: and my mouth will declare Your praise. Psalm 51:5 P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me; C: make haste to help me, O Lord. Psalm 70:1 C: Praise to You, O Christ, Lamb of our salvation. (Please be SEATED) READING Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9 4:14 Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. -
Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service
MAUNDY THURSDAY TENEBRAE SERVICE This service was originally designed for a church that usually only celebrates either Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, but not both. It combines Maundy Thursday’s new commandment, a fellowship meal, the Last Supper and a Tenebrae service. For a larger church, this could be done twice in the same evening. As people are eating, they are to reflect upon the text of Maundy Thursday. Tables are set up so that everyone is seated at table. A simple fellowship meal may precede this liturgy, in which case, casually and informally make sure that a basket of bread is on the table for all to share and that a bottle of sparkling grape juice is also there to share. Toward the end of the meal, break into it with the following liturgy. The idea is that like Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, the meaning of the meal just suddenly unfolds with Jesus’ odd words interjected into what seemed like a rather ordinary meal of the day. Lit tapers are on each table. A larger Christ candle is also in center of the space on one of the tables or on its own stand. This service requires advanced preparation and some practice in the evening with regard to lighting so that the lights gradually dim with the extinguishing of each candle. Timing is everything. There is a rhythm to this story that needs attention, so pastors may hand this service to someone with drama experience to “direct” the liturgy so that all he/she has to do is holy communion. -

Abstract Music Is an Essential Part of Our Lives. the World Wouldn't Be The
Abstract Music is an essential part of our lives. The world wouldn’t be the same without it. Everyone is so enthralled by music that whether they are bored or they are working, music is often times the thing that they want to have playing in the background of their life. A. The wide range of genres allows people to choose the type of music they want to listen to. The music can range from soothing and light forms to the heavy metal instrumentals and vocals. Many singers and artists are working in the music industry, and many of them have served a lot to this industry. Best sellers of the artists are appreciated in the whole world. It is known know, music knows no boundaries are when a singer does a fantastic job; they become famous all across the globe. Sadly, as time goes on musicians pass away however, their legacy remains very much alive have passed, but their names are still alive. The world still listens to their music and appreciates their work. One such singer is Michael Jackson. His album Thriller broke the records and was the best seller. No one can be neat the files of the king of pop. Similarly, Pink Floyd made records by their album The Dark Side of the Moon. It was an enormous economic and critical success. Many teens are still obsessed by the songs of Pink Floyd. AC/DC gave an album called Back in Black. This was also one of the major hits of that era. All these records are still alive. -
Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry
Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry of the Hip-Hop Generation by Austin Harold Hart April, 2012 Thesis Director: John Hoppenthaler Major Department: English (Literature and Poetry) This study aims to offer an understanding of hip-hop culture through which three concepts are elucidated: (1) the existence and dimensions of a collective consciousness within rap and poetry of the hip-hop generation (Allison Joseph, A. Van Jordan, Terrance Hayes, Major Jackson, Taylor Mali, and Kevin Coval); (2) a poetics of rap—to parallel the influence seen/suggested among the selected poets; and (3) an analysis of the manner(s) in which the poetry of these more serious, academic artists reflects an influence of hip-hop culture. My thesis suggests that these poets are indeed influenced by the culture in which they grew up, and in their verse, this influence can be seen through linguistic playfulness, sonic density, layered meaning and usage through form and content, and the connection to a larger cultural, collective consciousness fed by specific social bodies. Poetic analysis, as well as studies of vernacular and oral traditions, has allowed me to explore these concepts and theories from a wider spectrum, and with regard to the work of the poets, an original perspective. Providing a deeper understanding of artists, their identities, places, and dreams within their work, this study begins to offer some insight into notions of the ways in which individuals might participate in cultural conservation.
