Film Fiction | Oktyabr, №2 5 -“Biutiful” niyə səhv yazılıb? -Səhv deyil. Mən istədim belə yazılmasını. Gözəllik elə gözəllikdi. Ona necə baxılmasından asılı olmayaraq. Film də tamaşaçıya bunu deyir. -Bardemlə işləmək necə idi? -Əla! Bardem əsl aktyordu. Biz bir-birimizdən razı qaldıq. -Bəs Bardemə alternativ kim ola bilərdi? O isə nə ağlayır, nə də bunun fikrini edir. O sadəcə hər şeyi öz yerində görmək istəyir. Yəni biz insanlar əslində özümüz üçün yox, kimin üçünsə yaşayırıq, kimin üçünsə də ölürük. Filmlərimə faciə yox, reallıq desəniz daha ədalətli olar. -Son sual. Nə vaxtsa sizdən həyat dolu, pozitiv film görəcəyik? -Söz verirəm. Mütləq. Baxın söz verdim. Ha ha ha... 1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

  • The Films of Theo Angelopoulos: a Voyage in Time
The Films of Theo Angelopoulos: A Voyage in Time Evangelos Makrygiannakis Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2008 Abstract This thesis provides a critical enquiry into the films of Theo Angelopoulos. Dividing his films into two periods—the one running through the seventies and the other starting with the advent of the eighties—I will examine the representation of history in the first period of Angelopoulos and the metaphor of the journey in his subsequent films. Furthermore, I will trace the development of an aesthetic based on long takes which evokes a particular sense of time in his films. This aesthetic, which is based on the internal rhythm of the shot, inscribes a temporality where past, present, and future coexist in a contemporaneous image. Being free from the requirements of an evolving plot, this image is an autonomous image which allows the passing of time to be felt. Autonomy, which I will define after philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis as an immanent movement towards change, can be also used to describe the process of changing oneself or a given society from within. In exploring the resonances autonomy has, I will make a connection between the social and the cinematic; an attempt which is informed by what Angelopoulos’ films do of their own accord. In this way, I will suggest that Angelopoulos is important not only for the history of film but also for one’s modus vivendi. iii iv Acknowledgements I would like to deeply thank my supervisors, the late Professor Dietrich Scheunemann, Professor Martine Beugnet and Professor John Orr, for all their precious feedback and support throughout the years.

These directors are significant in the history of cinema because of the themes they developed in their movies as well as the novelties they brought to the form. Angelopulos, Eisenstein, Bergman, Bunuel, Ceylan, Fassbinder, Ford, Godard, Kurosawa, Loach, Ray and Visconti: all of them produced masterpieces of the film history and their production may be defined as turning points in the evolution of cinema as an artistic realm. We think that their works can be analyzed and identified from many perspectives as they are most relevant to define the main purposes of film as art. Native place-making and universal, developed and underdeveloped, East and West, conventional and avant-garde, national and international, all of these dualities profoundly elaborated in human and social sciences will also be important for us to think about and discuss leading work of arts of these authors.

y friend the architect Colin Fraser Wishart says that the purpose of his craft is to help people live better. There’s beautiful simplicity, but also Menormous gravity in that statement. Just imagine if every public building, city park, urban transportation hub, and home were constructed with the flourishing of humanity - in community or solitude - in mind. Sometimes this is already the case, and we know it when we see it. Our minds and hearts feel more free, we breathe more easily, we are inspired to create things - whether they be new thoughts of something hopeful, or friendships with strangers, or projects that will bring the energy of transformation yet still into the lives of others.
