The Significance/Importance and Role of Specially Protected Nature Areas in the Protection of Biodiversity and Landscape Diversity
The significance/importance and role of Specially Protected Nature Areas in the protection of biodiversity and landscape diversity The landscapes of Specially Protected Nature Areas of Armenia and challenges of their protection SPNAs play pivotal role in the conservation and restoration of nature, as they contribute to the reduction of anthropogenic impact on the environment ensuring ecological balance, biological and landscape diversity conservation. SPNAs being integral part of the country's total environmental system, are included in the effective nature use system and in interaction with the operating areas implement environment conservative and resource- saving functions. Currently the following SPNAs operate in the Republic: 3 state reserves (“Khosrov forest”, “Shikahogh” and “Erebuni”), which cover 35 439.6 ha territory or 1.19% of Armenia’s total area; 4 national parks (“Sevan”, “Dilijan”, “Lake Arpi” and “Arevik”) which cover 236802.1 ha territory or 7.96 % of Armenia’s total area; 27 state sanctuaries which cover 114 812.7 ha territory or 3.95% of Armenia’s total area; and 232 natural monuments. Due to the complex relief and altitudinal and zonal alternation of the Armenia, even on the small territory of the country it is possible to distinguish six climatic types and 10 landscape zones from semidesert areas to snow covered highlands. There are also a number of intrazonal ecosystems (wetlands, rocks, screes), which are present almost in all altitudinal zones. The location of the country in the intersection of three biogeographical provinces, diversity of climatic conditions and active geological processes have resulted in formation of diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity with high level of endemism. -

UNDP Project Document – Amendment for split of the project into two subprojects After decision to execute one part of the project by WWF, the project was split into two subprojects by means of budget revision, creating two AWPs with separate Atlas numbers and budgets. The project’s objective is to catalyze the expansion of the nature reserves to provide better representation of ecosystems within Armenia’s current protected area system and enable active conservation of biodiversity. The project’s two components will focus upon: (1) rationalization of the PA system through improving the regulatory and institutional framework relevant to Sanctuary establishment and operation; and (2) institutional capacity building by piloting a suite of Sanctuary management tools largely absent from Armenian’s current protected area management regime. This project’s efforts will result in a national protected area system better equipped to include and conserve currently under- represented ecosystems and associated species. Project investment will be in community areas to improve management of productive landscapes while helping to promote connectivity and alleviate poverty. -

Scientific tourism is one of the types of tourism which is often considered as knowledge oriented or learning tourism. Scien- tific tourism activities include participation in expeditions, excavations, congresses, conferences, experi- ments, contests and other scientific events. 5th European Regional Meeting on the implementation and effectiveness of the Ramsar Convention 4-8 December 2004, Yerevan, Armenia Keynote Wetlands in Armenia – their values and threats and their contribution to sustainable development and poverty alleviation Karén Jenderedjian Standing Committee Ministry of the Nature Conservation In the imaginary “list of Ramsar records” the United Kingdom is the record holder with the highest number of Ramsar sites (159), Canada holds the largest Ramsar territories (total 13,051,501 ha), Botswana holds the largest single Ramsar site Okawango Delta System (6,864,200 ha), and Armenia’s Ramsar sites are amongst those covering the largest area of the country’s surface: one sixth (4,922 km2 of 29,743 km2). Diversity of Wetlands in Armenia The Armenian Database of Wetlands of International, National and Local Importance includes 24 inland wetland types according to the Ramsar Classification System. Of rivers only 4 are >100 km long (Arax, Debed, Hrazdan, Vorotan). Most rivers have strongly pronounced seasonal water flow fluctuations; many of them are seasonal. Few rivers form small deltas. Among the lakes and ponds with a surface >1 ha, Lake Sevan is the largest freshwater lake of the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Middle Asia regions. Lake Arpi (Shirak Marz) is the second largest lake of Armenia. Both lakes are designated in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. In the mountains of Geghama, Zangezur, and Aragats a large number of small lakes (<1 ha) exist, mainly fed by snowmelt. The larger lakes are fed by well-developed tributary river systems. Lake Ayghr is fed exclusively by groundwater.
