Developing the Protected Area System of Armenia
UNDP Project Document – Amendment for split of the project into two subprojects After decision to execute one part of the project by WWF, the project was split into two subprojects by means of budget revision, creating two AWPs with separate Atlas numbers and budgets. The signed versions of AWP between UNDP and WWF Armenia and the signed version of the budget revision of the existing AWP between UNDP and the Ministry of Nature Protection are attached in PIMS database and Atlas system. The project’s objective is to catalyze the expansion of the nature reserves to provide better representation of ecosystems within Armenia’s current protected area system and enable active conservation of biodiversity. The project’s two components will focus upon: (1) rationalization of the PA system through improving the regulatory and institutional framework relevant to Sanctuary establishment and operation; and (2) institutional capacity building by piloting a suite of Sanctuary management tools largely absent from Armenian’s current protected area management regime. This project’s efforts will result in a national protected area system better equipped to include and conserve currently under- represented ecosystems and associated species. Project investment will be in community areas to improve management of productive landscapes while helping to promote connectivity and alleviate poverty. -

Introduction: In today’s time every moment many people are making plans to travel across the world for personal and professional purposes. Introduction Tourism plays a significant role in the economies of our coastal and Great Lake states, with significant contributions to jobs, tax revenues, and quality of life. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ocean-based tourism and recreation contributes approximately $116 billion in gross domestic product to the national economy each year and 2.3 million people are employed by this sector. However, as growth and development along the coast increases, the tourism economy may negatively affect the very resources on which the industry relies. At the same time, changing climate and weather conditions can also impact these resources and how business and associated communities operate and respond to these changes. -
Digital Applications of Ancient Armenian Stone Carving for Rural Housing in Shikahogh

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE BANK Lilit Mnatsakanyan UCL (University College London) Masters of Architectural Design Digital applications of ancient Armenian stone carving for rural housing in Shikahogh. Background and rationale The proposed research will attempt to create a digital-analogue hybridized design solution for a rural development, therefore it entails a research by design or an action research with the intention of innovation. The aim of the thesis is to investigate into the possibilities of bringing together the long established stone masonry tradition in Armenia, the Shikahogh village in Syunik province in Armenia and the modern digital applications. Hence the challenge is to utilize the ancient carving techniques on the platform of the digital applications whilst addressing the real needs of the villagers. These three areas have various degrees of available research materials: The information about the ancient stone carving methods is extremely limited, few written manuscripts and instruction manuals have survived from around 5th Century BC. However the modern interpretations of the techniques are used in the country currently, as well as the physical manifestations of these methods in forms of the manmade caves and Khachkars (traditional carved stones) which will provide basis for the studies. The development site Shikahogh is vastly under-researched, the information is scarce, especially around the various recent activities of controversial nature (the mining site, the new built road and the one in the pipeline, etc.). Therefore the source of information at this stage has been drawn upon a number of Armenian press releases, governmental and national statistics websites. The major part of the site specific issues will be clarified during the fieldwork.
