(Levi’s Stadium) STANFORD 28 USC 31 USC became the first South Division team to capture the Pac-12 title, breaking a six-game winning streak by the North Division, with a 31-28 win over Stanford at Levi’s Stadium. It was the Trojans 39th conference crown. USC quarterback Sam Darnold, the game’s Most Outstanding Player, connected on 17 of 24 pass attempts for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His first scoring strike, a 7-yard completion to Michael Pittman Jr., opened the game’s scoring at 7-0. Pittman hauled in seven receptions for 146 yards on the evening. Stanford’s Bryce Love got the Cardinal on the board with a 9-yard run to begin the second quarter, tying the game at 7-7. USC responded with a 24-yard field goal and a 19-yard touchdown pass from Darnold to Tyler Vaughns to give the Trojans a 17-7 lead. Just before the half, the Cardinal responded with a big 45-yard reception from K.J. Costello to J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and a 1-yard plunge by Cameron Scarlett to trim the lead to 17-14 at the intermission. USC put the ball in the hands of Ronald Jones II in the second half where he picked up 65 yards and two TDs on 15 carries. His first touchdown, a 1-yard score, put the Trojans up 24-14. He finished the night with 140 yards on 30 carries. Trailing 24-21 midway throught the fourth quarter, Stanford was looking to take its first lead of the game, but were stopped by the USC defense on 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line. With their backs against the wall, Darnold threw a 54-yard completion to Pittman, then Jones added his second touchdown with an 8-yard score to give the Trojans a 31-21 lead. The Cardinal continued to keep USC in check when they quickly scored on a 28-yard scoring strike from Costello to Kevin Smith with 2:09 remaining in the game. However, Stanford’s on-side kick went out of bounds and USC ran out the clock to preserve the victory. 2017 PAC-12 HONORS Offensive Player of the Year: Bryce Love, RB, Stanford Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year: Vita Vea, DL, Washington Freshman Offensive Player of the Year: J.J.
