Nudedragons to King Animal — the First Ever Fan-Based Compilation Photobook — Is Now Available! PHOTOFANTASM SOUNDGARDEN: NUDEDRAGONS TO KING ANIMAL — THE FIRST EVER FAN-BASED COMPILATION PHOTOBOOK — IS NOW AVAILABLE! The only book ever created by the fans for any high-profile band, Photofantasm Soundgarden is dedicated to rock pioneers Soundgarden. It features commentary and recollections from fellow artists, the music press, and other notable contributors. SEATTLE, May 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal highlights the Seattle band’s rebirth via hundreds of pages’ worth of photographs, graphic art, anecdotes, interviews, and reviews. In a truly collaborative effort, fans, artists, musicians, authors, photographers, and other notable personalities all help chronicle Soundgarden's performances across the globe from 2010 to 2013. To quote Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge author Mark Yarm in his foreword to Photofantasm Soundgarden, the book is “by the fans, for the fans”—the book boasts more than 300 contributors from more than 30 countries on six continents—and captures what promises to be just the beginning of a very long second chapter! Much like classic vinyl, Photofantasm Soundgarden is a quality, limited-edition collector's item (only 1,000 copies) meant to be savored by the fans (and the band itself) for years to come. The heart of this book is a section devoted to the loving memory of an extraordinary friend and Soundgarden fan who courageously fought cancer. All net proceeds will go to Canary Foundation, the first and only foundation in the world solely dedicated to the funding of early cancer-detection solutions. Photofantasm totals 592 pages, much of it exclusive content. It includes more than 1,000 photographs, plus concert posters, original artwork, hundreds of stories, interviews, reviews, and more. Printed and bound in the USA, Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal can be purchased exclusively at www.Photofantasm.com. Also check out the site for a sneak peek at some of the book’s highlights and a list of all the contributors. “This book is a must-have for Soundgarden fans and an opportunity to give to a great cause!” say authors Jaye and Mike English. “It took passion and several years to collaborate with fans and artists around the world to create Photofantasm and have it remain authentic. We’re happy we made history together and proud to give back. We thank everyone who contributed!” Soundgarden, which features members Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd, have released six studio albums, won two Grammy® Awards, and sold millions of records worldwide. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • SOUNDGARDEN Superunknown (Hard Rock)

  • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

Rhymes and Linkin Park recently collaborated on “We Made It,” the first single and video from Rhymes’ upcoming album, Blessed. By touring together, Linkin Park & Busta are taking a cue from the chorus of their song: “…we took it on the road…”. As recently pointed out in Rolling Stone’s “Summer Tour Guide,” the tour will see nine acts joining rock superstars Linkin Park, who are also offering concertgoers a digital souvenir pack that includes a recording of the band’s entire set. As the band’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda told the magazine, “That puts extra pressure on us to make sure our set is different every night.” The fifth installation of Linkin Park’s raging road show will see them headlining an all-star bill that features former Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, electro-rockers The Bravery and Ashes Divide featuring Billy Howerdel, known for his work with A Perfect Circle.

(collectively, “Defendants”). I. INTRODUCTION “Everybody out for my blood, everybody want my percent … They just want to take what is mine, how much more can they get.” - Sweet Revenge 1. In 2009, Chris Cornell penned these lyrics about his former Soundgarden bandmates after they unlawfully (and unsuccessfully) attempted to deprive him of his rights in connection with the valuable musical works that he created for the band. Ten years later, and after Chris’ untimely passing, these lyrics hauntingly resonate as his former bandmates, once Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 2 of 24 again, have attempted to “take what is his” – or, more aptly, to steal from his widow and minor children. This wrongful conduct shockingly started shortly after Chris’ untimely death and ultimately forced his widow, Vicky Cornell, to bring this lawsuit.
