Tom Stein Well, yet another month has passed and 12456 Roesta Ln. we are on to more Racing and DE events as you will notice in this issue. Yet another month passes Baltimore, Ohio 43105 without any articles from the club members. Don’t (614) 975-6789 be shy, send me your articles, big or small. Don’t [email protected] forget to send photographs too. I suppose summer is a busy time for everyone as I myself am having extreme difficulty finding time to sit in front of the Membership PC and author the newsletter, which is why it is Tom & Ginny Barry arriving so late this time. On that note, if there is anyone in the club that would be interested in 3350 Polley Road taking over the newsletter, I would be more then Columbus OH 43221-4704 happy to show you how it’s done and get you (614) 850–9107 involved. My personal and professional schedules email: [email protected] continues to grow and that leaves less and less time to devote to authoring the newsletter each month. Don’t get me wrong, I like being involved in the club but spare time is a hard to come by commod- ity when you have as many hobbies as I do. IRAC I, hosted by the Ohio Valley Region (OVR) on May 4th, featured several fast sweeping turns that took advantage of Kil-Kare’s crossing infield section and banked oval. Each driver com- pleted six runs. Nine MOR drivers participated in the event with four taking first place in their class (Jim Rybak in P2, Dave Wenger in P3, Jeff Dupler in P4, and Mike Tepley in P7). Mark Onosko finished third in the M-Class, which was also the third fastest time of the day for all drivers. Special mention goes out to Cindy Onosko, Mark’s wife, who participated in her first autocross event and who is expected to be running times close to Mark’s times before too long. Congratulations to all MOR drivers. IRAC II is scheduled for Sunday, June 1 at the OSU parking lots at Ackerman and SR 315. As the host Region, we hope that MOR drivers will show up in force to extend the success that MOR achieved at IRAC I. Don’t forget, each participant will receive a raffle ticket for an end-of-the-season drawing for a set of four (4) tires. For more details, see the event announcement on page 20 of the May 2008 Die Offene Strasse or contact either Jeff Dupler ([email protected]) or Dave Wenger ([email protected]). 5 MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting May 7, 2008 Submitted by Betsy MacDonell, Secretary Members in Attendance: Dave Hayden, Ginny Barry, Dick Snyder, Mike Stoner, Gerhard Hillmann, Marsha Hayden, Betsy MacDonell, Ron Carr, Jay Koehler, Karen Koehler, Brian Peterson, Bob Balchick, Doug Mansfield, and Milton Scott, The meeting was held at the King Avenue Five Sports Lounge and started at 7:07pm. A motion was made by Mike and Gerhard to dispense with reading of the minutes and to adopt them as printed in the April 2008 DOS. Correspondence Department: Dave received notice from Roy Wilkinson, PCA Zone 4 Representative, that he is interested in running for the PCA Secretary position and will need everyone in the club to write in his name on the ballot for that position. Dave circulated some information about the upcoming PCA Escape event in New Mexico. Dave also wondered if the club could have plastic name badges for members, similar to the board name badges, to be used at large events with lots of regions present. Karen Koehler volunteered that the School for the Blind has the ability and machine to make them for us (for a fee). She will follow up with details. Dave also passed around a copy of an e-mail that the BMW club sent to him about an upcoming wine tasting event. Club Race News was reported by Dave and Jay because John could not be at the meeting. John was able to secure the insurance for the event. The track schedule was approved by National PCA. As of May 7th, the Sprint race has 107 entrants; the Endro has 91 with 7 co-drivers. The enrollment numbers are less than expected and there are several ideas as to why. Some of the reasons may be the rising gas prices and the change back to a two day event. There will be a lot of topics, including incentives and penalties for timely payments, to discuss at the Club Race wrap up and planning meeting. Driver’s Education event has 92 people signed up so far but the target was 110. The Putman Park DE event opened online on May 1st and has 3 signed up to date. John Peecook and Rick Snyder would like to offer a Driver’s Education event for instructors sometime this year. There are a number of people that need to be certified through this type of program in order to be instructors at a PCA event. This type of event would either require renting a day at the track or have it during a scheduled DE event. The board felt that it would be too expensive for the club to cover this year and that the event should be planned to coincide with an existing DE event next year. News from the IRAC scene comes from Jim Rybeck via Dave. Jim says the timing equipment is in sad shape. He is sending some back to the manufacturer to have it changed from wireless to hard wired. The pylons have arrived and the stencil looks best done vertically. Treasurer Mike Stoner wants to pull the advertising space from two companies that have not paid yet. He plans to call them one more time before notifying Tom Stein, DOS Editor. Mike characterized the financial situation of the club as “near break even”. The Club Race event looks like it will break even at best. This financial situation may put some of the Club’s charitable contributions at risk. The IRS is now requiring all board members of a non-profit organization to file a 9090 form. This form covers conflict of interest issues. Mike and Dave will handle the filing of the form. Continued on page 7 6 June 2008 Membership Queen Ginny Barry reports a loss of 11 members with an addition of 2 new members. She notes that this is a normal fluctuation to the membership. Ginny and Tom hosted a membership table at Byers Imports Service Clinic on May 4th and spoke with several new potential members. The Clinic was a quality event that every member should try to attend in the future.

To a co-driver it’s the thrill of the world’s greatest amusement park ride, combined with the challenge of performing with great mental accuracy under the most physi- cally demanding conditions. For the spectator it’s a view of the most exciting and demanding of motor sports. Around the world, rallying is wildly popular, attracting huge crowds that line the roads at every event in the FIA World Rally Championship. Rod Millen Special Vehicles Successfully Supports Design and Demonstration of Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle Rod Millen Special Vehicles, along with Lockheed Martin, has designed, built and demonstrated an advanced military ground vehicle envisioned for battlefield reconnaissance. (PRWEB) April 11, 2003 -- Huntington Beach, CA  March 28, 2003  Rod Millen Special Vehicles (RMSV), in partnership with Lockheed Martin, has successfully designed and demonstrated a new, highly- mobile vehicle called the Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle (UGCV) that is envisioned for the U.S. military for scouting and relaying intelligence. The demonstration took place at Sandia National Laboratories near Albuquerque, NM, earlier this year. Through a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract issued to Lockheed Martin in 2002, RMSV is responsible for vehicle design integration, mobility analysis, suspension design and construction, chassis design and construction, vehicle suspension control electronics and overall vehicle assembly. The UGCV is designed to navigate over large natural, urban and battlefield obstacles, sustain itself with hybrid electric power for long periods, and continue to operate after accidental roll-over. ÂThe specialized research, experience, and skills of our company blend perfectly with the needs of this project. Pushing the limits of performance, technology and ourselves  thatÂs what we are all about, said Rod Millen, founder and president of RMSV. The design and construction of the vehicle draw on advanced aerospace and racing technology. The carbon fiber and Kevlar composite chassis provides a robust, lightweight housing for vehicle systems and payload. A suspension system of six independent 360° rotating arms enables the vehicle to climb over obstacles greater than 150% of the tire diameter, as well as perform other mobility feats not possible with conventional vehicles.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb A Quick History Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to explore the Great Plains, Lt. Zebulon Pike first saw Pikes Peak in 1806 from the eastern portion of today’s Colorado in 1806. As he approached the magnificent peak, rising abruptly from the plains, Pike swore this 14,114-foot mountain would never be conquered by man. Zebulon Pike never scaled the mountain which bears his name. But today, Pikes Peak has been climbed by tourists from all over the world in cars, on horseback, on foot, on motorcycle and bicycle. Most visitors are overcome by its beauty, including Katherine Lee Bates, who was inspired by the view from the summit to compose America the Beautiful in 1893. Pike could have imagined neither motorcars nor the automobile race course which would conclude at the summit of his peak a little over a century after his first sighting. By 1900, a carriage road had been built. On August 12, 1901, two 1 Denver men named Yont and Felker were the first to drive to the top. Their trip in a two-cylinder Locomobile Steamer took just over nine hours and was accomplished by pushing as well as driving their motorcar. Spencer Penrose, one of Colorado Springs’ city’s major benefactors, realized the tourist potential of such a beautiful landmark. In 1915 Penrose finished converting the narrow carriage road into the Pikes Peak Highway. In order to publicize his adopted hometown and his new road he devised a simple plan; run an automobile race to the summit of Pikes Peak on the new highway.
