Annual Report (For the Year Ending 31St December 2019)
The Diocese of Llandaff Bywoliaeth Laleston a Merthyr Mawr gyda Pen-y-Fai The Benefice of Laleston and Merthyr Mawr with Pen-y-Fai Annual Report (for the year ending 31st December 2019) 1 Bywoliaeth Laleston a Merthyr Mawr gyda Pen-y-Fai The Benefice of Laleston and Merthyr Mawr with Pen-y-Fai Annual Report for the year ending 31st December 2019 Lent 2019 – and as part of the Diocesan Lenten observances, Bishop June and our three Diocesan Archdeacons announced that 2020 – the 100th anniversary of the formation of The Church in Wales – would also be designated as a “Year of Pilgrimage”. Of course the very nature of a Pilgrimage is that it is a journey into the unknown. Pilgrimage may start with some fixed destination in mind, but how the traveller reaches that destination is anything but fixed…. and as such, a Pilgrimage becomes a journey that can take the traveller along many different, unexpected and unanticipated routes. In many ways, Pilgrimage is all about making oneself vulnerable and open to new experiences and new journeys, being receptive to the path less travelled and rendering oneself dependent on the kindness of others. 2 As such (and as the Scallop shell symbol of pilgrim routes symbolises), there will be many roads that lead to a single end- point, but Pilgrimages themselves are widely considered to be more about the journey than the destination. As I write in early February, even though the Year of Pilgrimage has begun, I think it would be fair to say that (both in our Benefice and across the Diocese) we have still yet to truly identify how it is that we can authentically engage with this initiative so that it won’t just be seen as some kind of elaborate – but largely stereotypical - means by which to celebrate our 100th birthday. -

Amen The first reading is from the Acts of the Apostles In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, ‘Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.’ Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. -

Free us from the paralysis of selfishness and awaken in us the desire to serve, to do good. Even worse than this crisis is the tragedy of squandering it by closing in on ourselves. Come, Holy Spirit: you are harmony; make us builders of unity. You always give yourself; grant us the courage to go out of ourselves, to love and help each other, in order to become one family. Amen. The full text of the Holy Father’s homily is available to read on the Cathedral website. From Fr. Daniel … Over the last few months, a team of people have been working hard to establish a more permanent solution to the live-streaming of events at the Cathedral. Until this weekend, everything which has been broadcast from the cathedral has been done with very minimal technical skills (from me!); this includes my mobile phone data and my iPad acting as a camera . There has been an ongoing issue with the quality of the broadband in Charles Street, which affects the upload speed. Thanks be to God, we now have the ability to begin the live-streaming of Masses and Services from the Cathedral’s camera. -
Trinity Sunday 7Th June 2020 Year a Psalter Week 2
CARDIFF CATHEDRAL ☩ GADEIRIOL CAERDYDD Clergy House, 38 Charles Street, Cardiff, CF10 2SF Tel: (029) 20 23 14 07 Email: [email protected] Website: cardiffcathedral.org.uk Trinity Sunday 7th June 2020 Year A Psalter Week 2 When will our churches be open again? Last Wednesday, Archbishop George participated in a Zoom Meeting of the Faiths Forum, called by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. One of the items on the agenda was the phased re-opening of churches and other places of worship. From the meeting, Archbishop George would like to share some of issues of the phased re-opening that were discussed during the meeting. The first phase of the re-opening of churches and places of worship would be based on a traffic light system. In the initial re-opening phase, the light would be at red. This means that there would be controlled entry of individuals into our churches for private prayer, subject to the implementation of the Health and Safety regulations being in place. Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is a devolved issue to the Welsh Government, so while news was released Saturday evening confirming the re- opening in England, the time-scale may be slightly different here in Wales. Over the next week, the mammoth task of completing the Risk Assessment for the Cathedral, as well as beginning to make appropriate changes so as to ensure the safety of individuals visiting the Cathedral, will be a priority so that things will be setup and in place ready for the phased opening. I have set-up a section on the Cathedral’s website - www.CardiffCathedral.org.uk/ coronavirus - which will contain up-to-date information and news about the… ctd. -
