The Johnson's 1966 Buick Electra August 2015 Volume 40, Issue 8 The Johnson’s 1966 Buick Electra All my life I have been in love with the road giants of yesteryear. Not much of a brand loyalist, my love is spread across all of the greats. Everything from the Impalas of the fifties & sixties to Cadillac, Lincoln, Ford, & of course Buick. My dreams came true when I got the keys to my first car at sixteen. A beautiful 1991 Cadillac Brougham with 36,000 miles on the dash. As first cars tend to do, it came and went within a few years. Over the years I racked up several other big boys but none of them stuck with me. Page 2 Johnson’s Buick Continued Cut to a few years later when my wife and I are heading to see one of her friends at her home. As we pull into the driveway my attention is immediately focused on the great white whale parked along the street. This whale turned out to be a 1966 Buick Electra Hardtop Custom owned by the husband of my wife's friend. As the ladies chatted in the house, Paul and I stood in the driveway talking about the car. Later that evening Paul's wife would tell us how much he had enjoyed finally having someone who showed as much interest in the car as he did. Little did we know then that within a few short months Paul would be taken from this world after a short battle with Cancer. Shortly after his passing my wife received a call from his wife telling us that she was letting his car go and thought we would be the perfect new owners. And just like that we became the proud owners of this classic beauty. Short of a little polish and wax, the car didn't need much to get on the road. Its original 425 Nail Head cruises down the road like a dream. With the exception of a Vortex exhaust system and some window tint for the kids, the car is as it came from the factory only 63,000 miles ago. I plan on keeping this land yacht cruising for as long as I can turn a wrench. Michael Johnson VP Karl Here VP’s Nickelsworth Well here we are at the pinnacle of the “car” season. Many of us have attended numerous shows and events and will continue to participate as the summer rolls on. Our past club events have been great and more are in the works. Our move to Lili’s for our club meetings has been a hit as well. Hot August Nights is just around the corner and for all who signed up to help with the poker stops and the Friday night cruise, a big THANK YOU! We could still use more of you to help at these events so let me know if you are interested and can join us. It is important to participate in these events as they are major sources of income for our club to be used by us and not donated to charity. We also are still looking for chairmen to take over the Swap Meets and Summer Salute. For now, drive em if you got em. Karl Page 3 Original Olympic Torch How Many Club Members does it take to Put up a canopy Lots!!! A little rain didn’t stop us from having fun It’s more than a car show We do love to eat and drink Page 4 Due to an emergency at Sunrise Café, and with only 1 1/2 days notice, Lili’s owner TJ, a major sponsor for Summer Salute stepped up and said you can have it here. Bill and I along with Doug and Don & Pat Bugna arrived early thinking we would help move tables and set up. Wow were we surprised. Not only were all the tables set up perfectly but each place setting had a special menu TJ had printed with several delicious offerings. Talk about fate. A vote was taken with only three against. Lili’s is our new home! Club members having fun at our meeting Happy club members at Lili’s Sheryl with her first 50/50 win since her & her husband Started the club in 1979 $115.00 Congratulations Page 5 “SUMMER SALUTE” CHECK PRESENTATIONS It was a special night for our club as Veterans Guest House and Honor Flight Nevada were in attendance along with News Channels 4 & 8. • The Chevy II and Nova by Rick Feibusch
The Chevy II And Nova By Rick Feibusch Introduced amidst a throng of other compacts and often eclipsed by its Chevrolet siblings, the little Chevy II was one of t hose cars that always did its job well and is remembered fondly by the people who drove them. There are many unsung heroes of the daily road and highway wars. Most are "people's cars," functional transportation modules that got dad to work on time, the ki ds to school and mom to the market and back day after day. Many became lost in the cobwebbed corners of the mind because they weren't the big, flashy and sporty cars that we lusted after, but instead were the interim and practical ones that we were forced to drive until we could afford to "move up" to something a bit more impressive. Some, like the Model T Ford, VW beetle and Morris Minor, have been revered and honored over the years, but that had more to do with the fact that millions of each were prod uced over long periods of time with very little change and all were quirky enough to have a distinct “personality.” Millions of less prolific and unconventional marques have gone to the crusher with nary a tear. The Chevy II, introduced in late 1961, was one of the last compacts to be released after the great American compact rush of the late '50s and early '60s. The switch to compacts had been a reaction to a major financial crisis and automotive recession in the late '50s that induced many thrifty and pr actical Americans to purchase foreign made "baby cars".

  • My Cousin Horst Neumann Was Born in 1926 in Germany. Although He Was 27 Years Older Than Me I Understood Him Probably Better Then Anyone in the Family
Restoring my ’65 Buick Electra 225 (Of barked knuckles and aching joints) by Steve Hartwich My cousin Horst Neumann was born in 1926 in Germany. Although he was 27 years older than me I understood him probably better then anyone in the family. Horst was a confirmed bachelor (after one, early failed marriage) who loved his cars. Although he never owned more than one at a time he often would write on the back of a photograph in German, My beloved Abbey or My be- loved Buick. Abbey was his ’46 Lincoln sedan. He had a relationship with every car he ever owned very much like the strong feelings one person develops for another. In Germany when Horst was a child I was told he spent a lot of time riding his bicycle for fun. Once he came to the United States as an immigrant in the early 1950’s he transferred his love of bicycle riding to a car. I think his first car was a 1940 Buick Super Sedan. He later acquired a 1941 Chevy tudor sedan that came with his marriage. I don’t remember Horst prior to the ’46 Lincoln. I used to ride around in it a lot when I was a small child. Typi- cally we’d take a ride on the highway (Horst’s favorite pastime) then stop at Sydney’s Drive-in on the Plaza for a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We did the same in his next car, the ’56 Buick Special and to a lesser extent in his ’65 Electra 225.
