CURRICULUM VITAE: LUCIANA ASTIZ Professional Experience Ass. Dir. IGPP Real Time Data Array U.C. San Diego October 2005 to present Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U.C. San Diego. Oversee general operations of the Array Network Facility for the USArray, an NSF Earthscope project, with the project PI, Dr. Frank L. Vernon. Design automatic procedures and methods to monitor data quality, including review of instrumental calibrations, measurements of network performance, data retrieval and data quality of broadband recordings of real and non-real time data are part of my technical responsibilities. Integrate results of earthquake locations throughout the U.S.; evaluate magnitude thresholds and tectonic/anthropomorphic origin of seismic signals recorded by USArray stations. Communication with researchers, journalists, and the public for information related to USArray and ANF results. Editor in Chief of Seismological Research Letters January 2007 to February 2011 SRL is a bimonthly publication of the Seismological Society of America, which is more eclectic in nature with about one hundred submissions a year. Articles in this journal are refereed that are included in the scientific citation index. I am responsible for the review process, final publication and layout of each issue. My volunteer service as Editor of SRL started in September 2006, as such I participate in SSA’s Board of Directors Meetings. During my tenure as Editor 24 issues were published one of which contained a special issue on Earthquake Early Warning. Seismic Officer - P4 grade level CTBTO February 1999 to September 2005 International Monitoring System Division / Seismic Monitoring Section, Provisional Technical Secretariat, Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, Vienna, Austria. My responsibilities at the IMS were technical, scientific, and administrative for work done inside the organization and with the scientific staff of nearly 30 of the 170 globally based seismic monitoring facilities named in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. I conducted expensive field work related to the establishment of the IMS network in many countries including Canada, China, Egypt, Guatemala, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, United States, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. I was responsible for site surveys as well as for developing and testing software to analyze data recorded during our field operations. From the analysis of these data the best sites for 3-component stations and the design of regional seismic arrays has been determined. In addition, the results have helped defined a new low seismic noise model at high frequencies. I coordinated efforts for station upgrades, new constructions and equipment installation and testing for at least 10 seismic stations, of which 4 are regional arrays. The later were multimillion-dollar projects. I have written technical terms of reference, performed technical and financial reviews of proposals for many projects as well as provided definition to the certification process for IMS seismic facilities against established technical requirements. In addition, I have organized and develop curricula for many of the international technical training programs for seismic station operators offered by IMS since the fall of 1999. Postdoctoral Research Fellow U.C. San Diego February 1995 to Feb. 1999 Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U.C. San Diego. At IGPP I worked under the supervision of Peter Shearer, working on precise relocation of earthquake clusters in southern California and in the Borderland region to better understand the regional tectonics. Together with Paul Earle and Peter Shearer, we produced the IRIS 10th Anniversary Poster by stacking broadband recordings of moderate and large earthquakes to produce and obtain empirical travel-time curves. The same technique was applied to regional data recorded by KNET. I continued my work on estimates of seismic noise level for IRIS seismic stations and for related instrumental studies, which I did in cooperation with the IDA project. Results are widely available in electronic form at the IRIS web page. In cooperation with Frank Vernon at IGPP and colleagues at SDSU, UNR and CICESE in Ensenada, Mexico, I lead an experiment of 11 broadband sensors across Baja California, the Northern Baja Transect, starting in October 1997 recording data for about 9 months which helped determine the crustal structure across this divergent plate boundary and other source seismic studies to understand the tectonics of the area. IRIS Postdoctoral Research Fellow U. W. May 1992 to December 1994 Geophysics Program at the University of Washington Dr. Ken Creager and I developed software tools to automate the analysis of data from stations of the Federation of Digital Seismic Network stations. The estimated robust power spectral density functions of seismic noise for stations worldwide were published in the FDSN Station Book edited by IRIS in 1995 and 1997. C.V.: Luciana Astiz 1 of 7 June 2014 Postdoctoral Research Fellow U. W. Oct. 1990 to November 1991 Oceanography Department at the University of Washington Analysis of seismic noise for data from seismometers and differential pressure meters collected during the 1990 Arctic Ocean experiment by Adam Schultz at UW and Spahr Webb at SIO. Staff Researcher Caltech June to December 1987 Seismological Laboratory, Geological and Planetary Sciences Division at Caltech During this short period I was involved in the study of site effects in Mexico City using strong motion and seismic recordings of large earthquakes occurred along coastal Mexico. Graduate Research Assistant Caltech October 1980 to May 1987 Seismological Laboratory, Geological and Planetary Sciences Division at Caltech Research topics included determination of source parameters of large earthquakes at subduction zones, characterization of subduction zones from large earthquakes occurring at shallow and intermediate depths, and studies of regional seismicity using relative relocation methods. Modeling of long-period P and PP phases to determine upper-mantle velocity structure. Teaching Experience and Public Outreach 2010 - 2013: Served in the IRIS Education and Public Outreach committee. 2010 (Jan-Mar): Taught SIO-10, Introduction to Earth Sciences course to 175 UCSD undergraduates with only 1% dropout rate. 2008(Jan-Mar): Co-taught with Dr. Michael Hedlin SIO-10 to 145 students enrolled in this class. 20081999-2005: At IMS, I organize the technical aspects of all of the Technical Training Programs for seismic station operators offered by IMS. 1995-1998: As a post-doc at IGPP, I substituted Prof. Peter Shearer on many occasions and helped organize and run the Journal Club in which recent topics in all of Earth Sciences are discussed weekly. Ph.D. committee member on the exam of Avelina I. Fernandez Heredia at CICESE, Ensenada, BCN, Mexico in 2011 and in Janine Buehler in 2013 at Scripps Inst. of Oceanography, UCSD. Reviewed multiple scientific proposals for NSF as well as served as reviewer for scientific journals such as JGR, EPSL, BSSA, and SRL. Liaison to the Hispanic community during earthquake crisis, as well as given seminars to school children and Latin American visitors and journalists throughout my professional life.
