The Disc began in February 1958, with a Top 20 and one “Ones To Watch” chart was taken to be the Melody Maker chart form this date, and so (the equivalent of the Breakers chart). Alan Smith (2005) (Adapted 2017) The chart was compiled from twenty five random phone calls to dealers around the country and compiled on a Points, rather than sales, basis. Each dealer would provide a list of their twenty best selling records and these would be recorded by Disc from their Phone calls. Points were awarded as 20 for a number 1, 19 for a number 2, etc . Because only twenty five shops were phoned, many tied Positions were preelent in the early charts. On 6th October 1962 the chart expanded to a Top 30, and the breakers (Ones To Watch) was discountinued. Around 50 dealers were called now and advance orders were also accepted meaning that records from popular artists (such as Elvis) entered very high up the chart. By 1964 the chart was based on between 80 to 100 returns and on 23 April 1966 the chart expanded to a ToP 50 when Disc absorbed the failing paper Music Echo to become retitled ‘Disc and Music Echo”. The LP chart began at this Point, listed at the end of this book. UP to this point LP’s and EP’s were able to chart on the main chart. Advance orders were abandoned and only over the counter sales were accepted. From 1 April 1967 the paper reduced the chart from a ToP 50 to a ToP The Singles Artist Section Lists, in alPhabetical order, every song that charted on the Disc singles chart when they comPiled their own.
