The Disc began in February 1958, with a Top 20 and one “Ones To Watch” chart was taken to be the Melody Maker chart form this date, and so (the equivalent of the Breakers chart). Alan Smith (2005) (Adapted 2017) The chart was compiled from twenty five random phone calls to dealers around the country and compiled on a Points, rather than sales, basis. Each dealer would provide a list of their twenty best selling records and these would be recorded by Disc from their Phone calls. Points were awarded as 20 for a number 1, 19 for a number 2, etc . Because only twenty five shops were phoned, many tied Positions were preelent in the early charts. On 6th October 1962 the chart expanded to a Top 30, and the breakers (Ones To Watch) was discountinued. Around 50 dealers were called now and advance orders were also accepted meaning that records from popular artists (such as Elvis) entered very high up the chart. By 1964 the chart was based on between 80 to 100 returns and on 23 April 1966 the chart expanded to a ToP 50 when Disc absorbed the failing paper Music Echo to become retitled ‘Disc and Music Echo”. The LP chart began at this Point, listed at the end of this book. UP to this point LP’s and EP’s were able to chart on the main chart. Advance orders were abandoned and only over the counter sales were accepted. From 1 April 1967 the paper reduced the chart from a ToP 50 to a ToP The Singles Artist Section Lists, in alPhabetical order, every song that charted on the Disc singles chart when they comPiled their own. • The Pirates and Pop Music Radio
SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. He is currently Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Performing Arts and Media Studies at Salford College of Technology. • Some Back Ground Info
Some back ground info (source: The internet). Dennis Bryon and Blue Weaver first met in the mid sixties in a group called Brother John & The Witnesses. In 1966 Blue Weaver and Dennis Bryon joined a group from Cardif called Amen Corner. This septet, complete with saxes, was led by Andy Fairweather-Low, who at that time was only 16 years old. The group got a recording contract with Deram Records in 1966 and had many big hits during the next four years. These included "Gin House Blues," "Bend Me, Shape Me," and "High In The Sky" for Deram, after signing with Immediate Records they had further hits such as "(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice". During the four years of their existance they recorded three albums. After the end of Amen Corner, Andy Fairweather-Low founded a new, more progressive group, which he simply called Fairweather. The musicians of the new group were the same musicians that made up Amen Corner except for the horn section, which was missing. The first single release "Natural Sinner" was a big hit. After only one year the group broke up in 1971. After the failure of "Life In A Tin Can" the Bee Gees started to restructure the group and their sound. At first they found a new drummer. Dennis Bryon had previously played with Amen Corner and now joined the group. The next step for the Bee Gees was to find a new sound. Together with Atlantic producer Arif Mardin they worked on a modern form of rhythm'n'blues music. At first they added more rock'n'roll to their music.
