    C Rota de … Ponta Negra GEODIVERSIDADE 39° 40’ 12” N E GEOSSÍTIOS 31° 06’ 53” W ILHA DO CORVO Esta alcantilada ponta rochosa é constituída por basaltos associados ao último episódio eruptivo ocorrido na ilha do Corvo, o qual teve lugar, muito provavelmente, há cerca de 80.000 a 100.000 anos atrás. A escoada lávica associada estende-se por cerca de 1.200 m (segundo uma área elevada de orientação geral NNO-SSE) desde a zona do Pão de Açúcar até ao Alto dos Moinhos, atravessando a fajã lávica da Vila do Corvo e termi- nando na zona costeira da Ponta Negra, segundo arribas rochosas mergu- lhantes e com cerca de 20 m de altura. Ponta Negra is a steep and rocky sea cliff formed by basalts associated with the last eruptive episode that occurred on Corvo Island, most proba- bly about 80,000 to 100,000 years ago. The associated lava flow extends for about 1,200 m (as an elevated area with a general NNW-SSE trend), from the Pão de Açucar zone until the Alto dos Moinhos, crossing the Vila do Corvo lava delta (or lava “fajã”) and ending at the shore at Ponta Negra, as a rocky and plunging sea cliff, about 20 m high.     1 UMA HISTÓRIA de MANUEL DE ARRIAGA MANUEL José DE ARRIAGA Brum da Silveira — advogado, professor, poeta, deputado —, ficou para a História como um dos políticos portugueses mais notáveis da transição do século XIX para o século XX, e da monarquia para a república, encarnando talvez o perfil mais puro de um republicano íntegro, desinteressado e totalmente devotado à causa pública. Foi o primeiro Presidente da República Portuguesa. De acordo com a informação documental disponível, Manuel de Arriaga nasceu na Horta a 8 de Julho de 1840. Porém, há quem defenda que terá nascido no Solar dos Arriagas, na Ilha do Pico, onde a família costumava passar os meses de Verão, e posteriormente baptizado e registado na Horta, residência habitual dos seus pais. Oriundo de uma família abastada e com tradições na política e na vida militar — o pai era o administrador do morgadio familiar, o avô paterno um general que se distinguira nas campanhas da Guerra Peninsular, e um tio-avô fora deputado às Cortes Constituintes de 1821-22 —, Manuel de Arriaga fez os estudos elementares na cidade natal, e em 1861 foi viver para Coimbra para frequentar o curso de Direito. Na Univer- sidade, onde foi aluno distinto, cedo começou a revelar-se como notável orador e interveniente activo nas lutas estudantis, sendo um dos subscritores do Manifesto dos Estudantes da Uni- versidade de Coimbra à Opinião Ilustrada do País, redigido e publicado por Antero de Quental. A sua adesão ao positivismo filosófico e a defesa dos ideais do republicanismo democrático valeram-lhe a rejeição da família, tendo sido deserdado pelo pai, que o proibiu de voltar a casa.

It forms an isolated geographical region located at approximately 1500 km from the west coast of continental Europe and 3800 km from the American continental coast. The scattered configuration of the archipelago and its relative isolation from other islands and the two continents are the main factors behind the creation of a large Exclusive Economic Zone (corresponding to an area of approximately 953 633 km2) situated within ICES X and CECAF 34.2.0. The Azores region, being both insular and isolated, is socially and economically dependent on fisheries, as a sector generating direct and indirect employment, as the main source of production destined for external markets and as a source of food supply for the local population. The Archipelago of the Azores is one of the 30 regions with the highest dependence on fisheries in the European Union.

    IN MEMORIAM MANUELde ARRIAGA 1840 - 1917 IN MEMORIAM MANUELde ARRIAGA 1840 - 1917 Museu da Presidência da República, 2017 MANUEL DE ARRIAGA 08.07.1840 – 05.03.1917 Manuel de Arriaga,enquanto estudante em Coimbra. Colecção particular anuel José de Arriaga Brum da Silveira nasceu na cidade da Horta, ilha do Faial, a 8 de Julho de 1840. Era o quarto filho de Sebastião de Arriaga Brum da Silveira e de Maria Cristina Pardal de Arriaga. MPertencia a uma família aristocrática e com posses, mas sabe-se pouco sobre a sua infância e juventude. Matriculou-se no curso de Direito, na Universidade de Coimbra, em 1861. Nesta cidade conviveu com Antero de Quental e fez parte da Sociedade do Raio, uma organização estudantil que lutava pela reforma do ensino universitário. Em 1862, foi um dos 315 signatários do Manifesto dos Estudantes da Universidade de Coimbra à Opinião Ilustrada. Neste período aderiu às ideias republicanas e incompatibilizou-se com o pai, monárquico. O corte de relações significou o fim do apoio financeiro paterno e Manuel de Arriaga viu-se obrigado a dar aulas de inglês para poder sustentar os seus estudos. Apesar das dificuldades e da participação activa nos movimentos estudantis da época, Arriaga foi um dos melhores alunos do seu curso, tendo obtido o grau de bacharel em 1865 e a formatura em 1866. Entre 1866 e 1872, viveu em Lisboa. Na capital, integrou a equipa do jornal A República. Jornal da Democracia Portuguesa, com Antero de Quental, Oliveira Martins, Luciano Cordeiro, Eça de Queiroz e Jaime Batalha Reis.     José De Arriaga Was Born in the City of Horta

    ARRIAGA, José de (Horta, 1848 – Lisbon, 1921) José de Arriaga was born in the city of Horta (Azores), in 1848, into an aristocratic family descended from Flemish, French and Basque stock, settled on the island of Faial over several generations. His parents lived comfortably, being owners of extensive entailed estates (see “Os Últimos Vínculos Arriaga Brum da Silveira e o Herdeiro Manuel de Arriaga”, in O Tempo de Manuel de Arriaga, 2004, p. 156). In 1861, José de Arriaga, then thirteen years old, moved to Coimbra with his student brother Manuel. Being eight years younger, he would start with preliminary studies before entering the Faculty of Law, in 1864, and finishing his course in 1869. In Coimbra in the 1860s the student community was discovering new cultural and political concerns which were behind activities with a large impact on public opinion, such as the student protests, organized in a secret society (the Sociedade do Raio [Thunderbolt Society]), in the university’s historic sala dos Capelos, against the orders of the Rector (1862), and the famous Questão Coimbrã (1865), a dispute over the status of Romanticism. It was in this atmosphere that José de Arriaga spent his adolescence and youth, under the tutelage of his older brother. Furthermore, Republican societies were mobilizing many students, such as Antero de Quental, José Falcão, Emídio Garcia, Teófilo Braga, Eça de Queiroz, Manuel de Arriaga, amongst others (see O Republicanismo em Portugal da Formação ao 5 de Outubro de 1910, vol. 1, 1991, p. 25). It was in this environment that José de Arriaga passed his adolescence and youth, under the guardianship of his older brother.
