Price from: 125 € Introduction The Island of Pico is the second largest in the Azores and here you can find the highest mountain in Portugal, also called Pico, at 2,351m. Often referred to as the Mountain Island, Pico forms one of the points of the so-called "triangle islands", being the most southerly of the central group of the archipelago, and just 6km from Faial. The extensive lava fields that characterize the islands landscape, which the local population calls "lajidos" or "cookie lands" form the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2004. The immense volcanic cone of Pico Mountain, the third largest volcano in the Atlantic, imposes itself on the islands landscape. Inside its main crater, there is a cone of lava designated Piquinho, on top of which fumaroles permanently vent steam to remind us of its volcanic nature. It is on Pico that one of the largest visitable lava tubes in the world is found, in the Gruta das Torres, which stretches for five kilometres and is embellished by various types of lava stalactites and stalagmites, and ridged walls. For lovers of geotourism, there are other must-see sites to visit: the Furnas (geothermal sites) of Frei Matias, Silveira and Montanheiros; the Mysteries of Santa Luzia, Prainha and S. João, formed by lava from volcanic eruptions that occurred in the sea and were joined to the island; and also the Arcos do Cachorro, an impressive grouping of lava perforated by numerous tunnels and caves through which the sea passes creating a maelstrom. Pico is a land with a strong whaling tradition, and various handcrafted items of whale bone and tooth, as well as straw hats, flowers from fish scales and wooden miniatures of whaling boats are all good ideas for souvenirs. Day by day itinerary DAY 1: PICO ISLAND • 8:30AM (to be confirmed) Transfer from the hotel to Cais da Horta. • Ferry departure for channel crossing towards Pico Island (approx. 20 minutes). • Arrival in Madalena reception / assistance by our local representatives. • Beginning of the tour with passage in Cabeço Chão. • The first stop will be at Arcos do Cachorro to observe magnificent sea caves. • Continuation through the area of ​​the Mysteries, extensive lava fields, until S. It forms an isolated geographical region located at approximately 1500 km from the west coast of continental Europe and 3800 km from the American continental coast. The scattered configuration of the archipelago and its relative isolation from other islands and the two continents are the main factors behind the creation of a large Exclusive Economic Zone (corresponding to an area of approximately 953 633 km2) situated within ICES X and CECAF 34.2.0. The Azores region, being both insular and isolated, is socially and economically dependent on fisheries, as a sector generating direct and indirect employment, as the main source of production destined for external markets and as a source of food supply for the local population. The Archipelago of the Azores is one of the 30 regions with the highest dependence on fisheries in the European Union.
