Junior Field Day – Parnell vs. Cornwall

CRAIG PRESLAND, CLUB CHAIRMAN, REORTS ON A SUPERB DAY: A good day for both PCC grade 7 rep teams today with respective wins v Cornwall CC reps. While the match score across all grades was 5 to 3 to Cornwall I feel like we are closing the gap (remember that they have twice our number of junior players and in years gone by we have been whitewashed 8 nil and 12 nil). In the year 4a match today we lost by only 2 runs so we were not far away from a 4-4 result. It was very satisfying to hear from some of the Cornwall and Parnell coaches afterwards about the spirit in which the game was played, no player dissent etc. I was very impressed with the 2 Cornwall players who walked today in the grade 7a match on caught behind decisions when it appeared that the official umpire was not going to give them out. For the record here is a summary of the 7a match scorecard, courtesy of Jo McDonald who has been a wonderful scorer for this particular rep team over the past 5 years (thanks so much Jo!). PCC lost the toss and batted first on a heavy outfield (dew on the grass):

Grade 7A PCC 152/8 (40) Charles Wilkes 10 CCC 127/10 (37) Jackson Jarvie 5 overs 0- 9 Daniel Presland 11 Tom King 8 overs, 2-27 Louie Chandulal 37 Seb McDonald 4.4 overs 2-9 Will McLachlan 35 Robbie Jones 3 overs 1-17 Freddie Bell 1 Louie Chandulal 8 overs 1-40 Seb McDonald 6 William King 3 overs 2-12 Robbie Jones 8* Daniel Presland 3 overs 0-1 Max Chaplin 25 Max Chaplin 3 overs 0-10. Extras: 1 bye, 1 leg bye, 3 no balls, 12 wides. Result: Parnell won by 25 runs

Thank you Andrew Bell for the BBQ breakfast as well as all the comms, team selections with Ian Trott, and for organizing for the day. Big thanks also to Paul Wilkes for umpiring, and Jo (once again) for scoring. Coaching this particular rep team over the past 5 seasons has been a great pleasure for me and I have always said it has been a real privilege to coach your sons at cricket. We have had a lot of fun along the way going back to grade 3 days and I am very proud of our rep record over the years, played 23 won 22, with the only loss being to Cornwall in March 2014. Today was our last junior rep fixture at PCC, from grade 8 onwards representative honours for PCC players will involve playing for EDCA, otherwise various school rep teams. I have seen all the boys in the PCC 7a and 7b rep teams today develop over the years and I was delighted that both teams were able to beat Cornwall today. Wonderful result that.

PETER SPEAKMAN, RETIRING JUNIORS’ CHAIRMAN, REPORTS: Wonderful to see 7B also get across the line to beat Cornwall. After they scored 213, we achieved 214/6 with 9 balls to spare. Grade 7B CCC 213/3 (40) Ben Routley 8 overs 1-18 PCC 214/6 (38.3) Digby Turner 3 Tex Harrison 5 overs 0-27 James Dyer 26 Ryan Speakman 6 overs 2-22 Harry Sinclair 56# Ben Hay 3 overs 0-15 Ben Hay 9 Digby Turner 3 overs 0-22 Vinnay Chichester 13 Ben Blincoe 3 overs 0-18 Harry Bashford 46 Harry Bashford 0-21 Ben Blincoe 8 Tex Harrison 12* Zach Hughes 11* Ryan Speakman & Ben Routley did not bat Result: Parnell won by 4

Congratulations to all, Ben Routley with an economy rate of just over 2 runs per over in a high scoring game (over 5 runs per over) was player of day, well done Ben! other stand outs were Harry Sinclair and Harry Bashford, also Ryan bowling and fielding. This marks the end of the rep era for all these boys-a very big thank you to you all for all your participation and enthusiasm over the years, above all for the spirit in which you have played your cricket. It also marks the end of 9 years of rep cricket coaching for yours truly, something I am very proud of and honoured to have had the privilege to work with and help so many talented boys.

Signing off with thanks Peter Speakman

LADS, AND GIRLS TOO, DON’T LOSE CONTACT WITH PARNELL DURING SECONDARY SCHOOL DAYS!

This week, in the NZ Herald’s “College Sport”, Campbell Burnes has written an excellent article and highlighted Jack Coman, one of our very promising players – here is the link to that article: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11602360

Another Record to Tim – 1132 Runs this Season!

The moment! Tim McIntosh’s season aggregate passes Ben Horne’s 1072 to create a new Club record. Rather ironically, Ben was batting with Tim at the time. Tim went on to score 101, Ben was dismissed earlier for 61. Tim now has 1132 runs this season at an average of 56.65 – with 4 centuries to date, equaling the Club record. Tim’s 18th takes him ahead of Ross Morgan’s 17 and he is second only to ’s 26 for Parnell.

The only others to have scored over 1000 runs in a season for Parnell have been: Ben Horne 2013/14 1071 32 innings 3 n.o. 1072 runs 112* h.s. 36.97 ave Mark Turner 2007/08 1070 24 4 1070 128 53.50 Kirk Bunting 2012/13 1067 34 4 1167 118 36.57 Merv Wallace 1938/39 1002 11 1 1002 231* 100.20

5 & 12 March PARNELL vs. EAST COAST BAYS Shore Road Reserve

PARNELL 222 Tim McIntosh 101 (200), Ben Horne 66 (126), Tom Talbot 25 (61) EAST COAST BAYS 51/3 To be continued next Saturday

Day 1. Whilst opener Sam Varcoe was dismissed early, Tim and Ben batted very assuredly to lunch and continued on after the break. Ben, looking in great touch, was unexpectedly lbw to Louis Delport, ECB’s professional who played three 1st class games for Western Province last season. Tim carried on safely and unflustered but Jesse was caught with the total at 134. Tom Talbot brought stability and looked as he was set for the duration when, just before tea he became Delport’s second . Tea was taken at 198/4 and, very shotly after, Tim brought up his 4th century for the season and 18th for Parnell. From there it was a case of hari kari – Mimmack had entered the attack, an old head – George went without scoring, Tim was caught on the long on boundary and the rest followed! All out 222 – highly disappointing after such a promising start. Delport, a left arm spinner, took 5 wickets and Mimmack 3. HOWEVER, our bowlers have

[Type here] redeemed the situation somewhat – Rav capturing 2 of the 3 wickets to fall and Andy Lane (who scored 153* the previous Saturday) caught brilliantly by Tim at slip off the last ball. There is real hope for next week!

LEADERBOARD - AFTER 1st ROUND OF TOP 4 PLAY OFF FOR CHAMPIONSHIP: HEDLEY HOWARTH - TWO DAY MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM P W L D/T WKTS TAKEN RUNS FOR PTS 1. Takapuna 8 6 1 1 98 2493 97.43 2. Note that Takapuna has already secured 1st innings point in this current round having bowled Suburbs NL out for 133 and then declared at 156/2. One hopes that their lead isn’t extended too greatly, if at all, and that the last game of the season is a fitting Grand Finale.

5 March PARNELL KINGS vs. CORNWALL Cornwall Park

CORNWALL 193 Abrar 3/33, Aaron 2/13 PARNELL KINGS 177 Abrar 89, Aaron 32, Chak 24

RESULT: PARNELL KINGS LOST BY 16 RUNS

Skipper Chak reports: We played Cornwall at Cornwall park last Saturday. It's very disappointing to say that we lost. It was a game we could won so easily but just mucked it up. Having won the toss we bowled first and dismissed them for 193. On reply we were off to a blistering start with Abrar smashing boundaries at will and me Chak gave him good company. We were 102 for no loss and then disaster struck. I got out and so was abrar and so was everyone else. Aaron played a quick knock of 32 including 3 sixes and 1 four in an over and got out in the same over. In the end we were dismissed for 177 in 22 overs, a real tragedy.

GAME OF THE WEEK Grade 7 Parnell vs. Cornwall

Game of the week has to be the Parnell Grade 7 team that played Cornwall last Saturday. Parnell batted first and were bowled out for for a disappointing 103.

It looked all over for Parnell when Cornwall was 79/1 in reply. Amazingly, the Parnell lads responded to the challenge and Cornwall wickets started to fall. Then, with their last man at the crease and 3 runs needed for victory, Cornwall’s no. 11 hit the ball beautifully – looked 4 all the way. But not to Daniel Presland who had chased hard, turned and flung the ball straight back over the stumps – run out! Cornwall all out for 102 and a win to Parnell by 1 run – sensational!

GRADE 6 – BEN GRAHAM’S 5/11 FOR PARNELL SIMPSON vs. SUBURBS NL

Grade 6. Ben Graham – 5/11 for Parnell Simpson vs. Suburbs NL

Lisa Graham reports A couple of weeks ago, the game against Suburbs New Lynn was as tight as they come. The excitement levels amongst the spectators were sort of like those during the South Africa/NZ game last year in the , other than the fact we lost and were chasing only 80 runs off a 23 over match. It came down to needing 3 to tie off the last ball ... we got 2. But that was a reflection of an excellent ball from New Lynn, and the 2 runs were an outstanding effort reflecting the batsmen doing everything humanly possible gutsing out a speedy double sprint, getting back to base before they could be run out. The batsmen in at the end had done sterling work to create the possibility of a win and not only walked off with heads held appropriately high, but to rousing applause. The other team's coach took it upon themselves to come over and congratulate our coach Grant Arbuckle on a wonderful attitude and how much they enjoyed playing us. I'm afraid I don't have the score book and obviously with our run chase coming up short there is not much to say re batting scores, other than the last 2 batsmen realised they needed to grab every possible run and did so. As to Ben's 5 wickets - they were all clean bowls.

Re the Parnell Simpson v New Lynn game last weekend, the last batsmen in were Jack Arbuckle and Thomas Foley, and Ben bowled 3 overs.

AND FROM JEREMY BOUCHER - GRADE 3 PARNELL TIGERS vs. GRAFTON UNITED WILLIAMSON

This photo is from a game played on 27th February between the PCC Grade 3 Tigers and GUCC Williamson. Those of us lucky enough to be on the sideline on a patchy day at Cox's Bay reserve witnessed something pretty special. Bowling towards the end of the game, Lachie Henwood started his over with a dot and then proceeded to start a Team Triple Hat-Trick. The 1st saw a clear run out from a terrific piece of fielding, then 2 wickets, a further run out and then another wicket. Remarkable stuff featuring a couple of batsmen being bowled out and a good catch. Lachie's figures for the day were pretty impressive and it is a pleasure to report that the PCC Tigers won the game 169 runs to 8 runs.

The PCC Tigers coached wonderfully by Shankar Pasupati have had a pretty impressive season, unbeaten to date! Good prospects for the Club as the players move into Grade 4.

The team players for the day were: Lachie Henwood, Oscar Shuttleworth, Ishan De Zoysa, Arthur Macgill, Varnan Pasupati, Thomas Boucher, Daniel Luxton and James Hadden. The photo shows young Lachie holding the match ball surrounded by some pretty happy team mates.

The Adaptive Cricket Day

This is an annual event for the Club. Some 80 special needs students from Sommerville Special School, Edgewater College and the Pegasus Unit at Pakuranga College attended. Unfortunately no-one from Homai College was able to come this year as they had in the past.

As always, Saint Kentigern School came up trumps by providing 19 helpers - all Year 8s. Two of whom also manned the BBQ very successfully. The contribution from these schoolboys was huge - their enthusiasm, and goodwill to the participating student, was infectious. Many thanks to the boys and to Duncan Grant, the Master in Charge.

The skill stations were set up by the young Scot, Joe Kinghorn-Gray, in the absence of Simon Herbst, one of our Senior coaches who was . Joe is here on his 3rd visit to NZÂ and is very experienced and capable - he has held an ECB Level 2 coaching certificate for 5 years and is hoping to advance to Level 3 shortly.

Other stations were manned by Sathil, a coach from Auckland Cricket, and some of our player/coaches - Pete Hickman, James Nuttall and Matthew Vercoe-Curtis. Our lads, including Joe, gave their services gratis and their efforts were very much appreciated.

Lastly, further thanks to Donna Trott, Bronwyn Fitzpatrick and my wife Jenny who supervised the kitchen.

The following photos tell the story of the day:

VSL = Over 60s, UK Tour & News

Per Dianne McDermott As you know, the Over 60’s Cricket week has been a biannual event for the last eight years – it’s been a great time! This year however sees the last Over 60’s week we will be doing here in Auckland. We have four teams travelling from Australia to play (Gippsland Goannas, Mid North Coast, UNEX and VOSCA), and to ensure these teams have a great time and to celebrate this last week – we are able to do individual days of play and also individual ticket sales for functions.

Even if you are unable to play – come along and share the great comraderie and atmosphere of this week at a fantastic venue.

Please let me know if you are able to play as we definitely need more New Zealand players for all days – and of course, the more the merrier at the functions.

This is the last Over 60’s we are doing and I really want to make it worth it for the 86 Australians we have travelling over.

These are the days that I need players for:- All games will be played at the North Shore Cricket Club Tuesday 29th March Wednesday 30th March Friday 1st April Saturday 2nd April

There is also an opening bbq at the end of play on the 29th March at the NSCC and a finale dinner at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Maritime Room at the Viaduct Basin.

Costs are:- $35.00 per player per day (including lunch – cash bar available for drinks); $25.00 per person for the opening bbq (cash bar available for drinks); $110.00 per person for the finale dinner (drinks included). Partners and supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets for the two functions.

Even if players can only come for the opening bbq or finale dinner that would be fantastic – it is a great chance to celebrate the Over 60’s held at the North Shore Cricket Club over the last 8 years and it will be fantastic to have a great Kiwi welcome and hospitality for our visitors.

With kindest regards,

Dianne.

AND THE UK TOUR As an early bird option – could you please post this itinerary for us.
