Marcus Dupree
Marcus Dupree When Marcus Dupree played football in Philadelphia, MS, his play united the racially divided city. Dupree was one the most highly recruited high school players in the history of American football, whose phenomenal athletic speed and agility were often compared to Jim Brown and Earl Campbell. He won almost every honor available in the nation. While Dupree was still in high school, a book was written about Dupree’s nationally publicized college recruitment titled, The Courting of Marcus Dupree. Dupree committed to the University of Oklahoma in 1982. Sports Illustrated featured Marcus on the cover in 1983 and his outstanding running plays were often the topic of nightly national news broadcasts. On January 1, 1983 Oklahoma played Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl where Dupree was named the MVP. Although he only played half of the game and had four injuries, Dupree set and still holds the Fiesta Bowl rushing record of 239 yards. In 1984 the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers signed Dupree at age 19 and made him the highest paid player in football. In his first year with the Breakers, Marcus gained 684 yards on 145 carries with 9 touchdowns. Unfortunately, a severe knee injury forced Dupree to leave the game. Amazingly, after an unprecedented five and a half year hiatus from professional football Dupree’s passion and determination were the catalysts for him to earn a tryout with the Los Angeles Rams. In 1990, Dupree made the team and was named, “Comeback Player of the Year.” In spite of a respectable sophomore season with the Rams, Dupree was released. -

Sport, Representation and Culture in the Modern World, 1920-2020
8. Representation Steven A. Riess Cultural historians study the change of human civilization over time. They focus on people’s beliefs, rituals, ideas, identity, social norms, institutions, and materials, with particular attention to the meanings of that culture’s elements (Hutton 1981). Cultural historians before World War II focused on high culture, but thereafter, because of the influence of cultural anthropology, they began to study popular culture, that include every day experiences and artifacts that express mass values and attitudes. Since the late 1960s, scholars have studied sport’s interaction with high and low culture, and also sport as an independent element of culture with s symbolic acts, representation, and struggle over meaning of sport’s myths and realities. American cultural historians have relied heavily on anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s concept of “thick description,” a process of studying and contextualizing human behavior. This was modeled by his analysis of the cultural significance of Balinese cock fighting which he called “deep play, ” that illuminated the network of social relationships in that traditional society (Geertz 1973). This process encouraged historians to study the sporting world and individual sports as cultural texts. A new trend that soon followed was an emphasis on memory as a cultural historical category, followed by the “linguistic turn” in the 1980s that emphasized the importance of language, a perspective in far greater vogue in Europe than the US. Cultural scholars outside North America are far more reliant on theory, particularly the polyschematic analyses of Michel Foucault, along with advocates of the visual and audio turns. Culturally minded sport historians employ cultural analysis as a window through which to understand the broader society. -

How Sports Help to Elect Presidents, Run Campaigns and Promote Wars."
Abstract: Daniel Matamala In this thesis for his Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University, Chilean journalist Daniel Matamala explores the relationship between sports and politics, looking at what voters' favorite sports can tell us about their political leanings and how "POWER GAMES: How this can be and is used to great eect in election campaigns. He nds that -unlike soccer in Europe or Latin America which cuts across all social barriers- sports in the sports help to elect United States can be divided into "red" and "blue". During wartime or when a nation is under attack, sports can also be a powerful weapon Presidents, run campaigns for fuelling the patriotism that binds a nation together. And it can change the course of history. and promote wars." In a key part of his thesis, Matamala describes how a small investment in a struggling baseball team helped propel George W. Bush -then also with a struggling career- to the presidency of the United States. Politics and sports are, in other words, closely entwined, and often very powerfully so.
