  • How Sports Help to Elect Presidents, Run Campaigns and Promote Wars."
Abstract: Daniel Matamala In this thesis for his Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University, Chilean journalist Daniel Matamala explores the relationship between sports and politics, looking at what voters' favorite sports can tell us about their political leanings and how "POWER GAMES: How this can be and is used to great eect in election campaigns. He nds that -unlike soccer in Europe or Latin America which cuts across all social barriers- sports in the sports help to elect United States can be divided into "red" and "blue". During wartime or when a nation is under attack, sports can also be a powerful weapon Presidents, run campaigns for fuelling the patriotism that binds a nation together. And it can change the course of history. and promote wars." In a key part of his thesis, Matamala describes how a small investment in a struggling baseball team helped propel George W. Bush -then also with a struggling career- to the presidency of the United States. Politics and sports are, in other words, closely entwined, and often very powerfully so. The less fortunate instances when they have come up short are also memorable for the frustration and pain they cause. After any victory by my preferred franchises, I was eager to watch their highlights on Sportscenter and then read the box scores and recaps in the newspaper or an online sports site. When they lost, I tried to avoid hearing about it and having the information about their shortcomings be repeated over and over became a burden to be managed until the next game or next season. Regardless of the outcomes, sports media, in my eyes, was entertaining and fun because it only involved sport. It provided short relief from the often disheartening news stories that reminded me that the world is plagued by many problems. For a long time, the ostensible purity of sports media, the focus on what happens in between the lines, and its entertainment value provided me with much comfort and delight. Sports seemed for me to exist in a vacuum of sorts; during the four quarters of basketball game or the nine innings of a baseball game I could take a momentary break from reality.

  • Sports Television and the Continuing Search for Alternative Programming Branden Buehler
Sports Television and the Continuing Search for Alternative Programming Branden Buehler Accepted author manuscript version reprinted, by permission, from the International Journal of Sport Communication, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1123/ijsc.2020-0245 © Human Kinetics, Inc. Abstract The American sports television industry has scrambled to adjust to the loss of live sporting events in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic – a scramble clearly evidenced in programming schedules suddenly filled with replays of older event telecasts. However, rather than focus on the apparent novelty of this type of substitute coronavirus programming, this article instead argues that the loss of live sporting events represents the amplification of a problem television networks have already been grappling with for years: how to fill an ever greater number of outlets with sufficient year-round programming given a finite amount of live events. That in mind, this article proposes that many of the programming strategies that networks have turned to in the midst of the pandemic, including the expanded coverage of transactions (e.g. coverage of NFL free agency) and the increased scheduling of documentaries (e.g. The Last Dance), have been familiar extensions of previously established alternative programming solutions. Sports Television and the Continuing Search for Alternative Programming The American sports television industry has been deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Like the rest of the American television industry, for instance, sports television has had to adapt to a decline in television advertising, with many brands adjusting to economic turbulence by pulling back on marketing budgets. The most visible effects of the pandemic, however, have manifested in networks’ programming schedules.

  • “Dropping the Ball”: the Understudied Nexus of Sports and Politics
The Understudied Nexus of Sports and Politics “Dropping the Ball”: The Understudied Nexus of Sports and Politics Thomas Gift1 (email: [email protected]) University College London Andrew Miner Harvard University From the Roman Colosseum to Wimbledon Stadium, the Olympics to the Super Bowl, sports have always played a central role in societies. With so much at stake—money, pride, power (and occasionally even fun)—sports are undeniably political. Yet despite this recognition, political scientists and policy scholars devote little attention to the study of sports, especially compared to other disciplines like business, law, and economics. We offer reasons for this void and suggest how political scientists can begin to fill it. In our view, the nexus between sports and politics is not only a vital topic of study on its own, but it can also provide a lens through which to examine—and test—broader questions in the discipline. We propose how scholars can think more systematically about the interaction of politics and sports and leverage the distinctive qualities of sports to improve causal identification across a range of issue areas and subfields in political science and policy studies. Keywords: Sport and Politics, Sports and Policy, Political Science Research, Political Studies Subfields, Review Article, Sport and Media, Sport and International Affairs.
