Two hundred guests from Denmark, England, Ireland, Faroe, Norway, Scotland, Shetland and Spain attended the launching ceremony in Spain. Adenia was named in the traditional manner by the skipper’s wife, Ruby Anderson, before their granddaughters, Faye, Lori and Mollie, smashed a further three bottles for good luck. Featuring a beam of 15.6m and 10 RSW tanks, Adenia was designed by Karl Sandvik of Salt Ship Design, a longtime friend of the owners, who also project- managed the new build. Adenia is expected to arrive at Shetland later this month, in time for the North Sea herring fishery. Michel Kaiser. Lieutenant Ken D Francis RM and his crewman, Lance Corporal Brett Giffin set off in Gazelle XX to search for them, but were hit by ground fire from a heavy machine gun and were killed instantly, the aircraft crashing on a hillside. Only Candlish survived. The bodies were recovered to SS Canberra, and when that ship was ordered to leave the Falklands and head for South Georgia, Evans, Francis and Giffin were buried at sea in a special service attended by many on board the liner. The REME technicians were able to repair the damage whilst still under constant air attack by Argentinian 'Skyhawk' and 'Mirage' ground attack jets but returned the aircraft for operational use. -
The War Memorials of Paul Parish in Cornwall
THE WAR MEMORIALS OF PAUL PARISH IN CORNWALL Several years ago I read the names on the tower of Paul Church of those who had given their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 and wondered who they were, where had they served and where and how they had died. There is no memorial book and so I started to compile a record from a variety of sources such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, National Maritime Museum Library, Morrab Library, Cornwall Record Office, Cornwall Family History Society, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Museum to name but a few plus various newspapers, publications and documents too numerous to list. Local and military knowledge helped as did many people who knew or are related to those named on the memorials. I did not confine my research to just the First World War but opened it up to include the Second World War and subsequent conflicts so, like Topsy, it grew! I am well aware that the details below contain errors and omissions but I hope that by publishing this record in the public domain it will elicit feedback and comments so that eventually we will have a true record and can never feel that we have “not remembered” those who gave their lives for us. My main problem is that the details in many records and accounts conflict and even memorials contain errors of spelling, transposed initials etc. However, this is a start and I look forward to receiving any comments, amendments and additions. Naturally I will continue my research until we have a record that we all can be proud of here in Paul Parish. -

With regard to my request, can I also ask if the Overseas Patrol Squadron is the same as the Coastal Forces Squadron? If not, could you advise when this squadron was formed, and which overhead command do both these squadrons sit under?’ Your enquiry has been considered to be a request for information in accordance with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000. A search has been completed within the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and I can confirm that information in scope of your request is held. The information relating to part one of your request is at Annex A to this letter. With regard to part two of your request, Overseas Patrol Squadron (OPS) and Coastal Forces Squadron (CFS) are separate squadrons. Both squadrons are under the command of Commander Surface Flotilla (COMSURFLOT). OPS used to be called the Fishery Protection Squadron. They control the fishery protection Offshore Patrol Vessels Batch One, they also control the Forward Deployed Units around the world such as the Falkland and Caribbean supporting British dependant territories. CFS used to be called First Patrol Boat Squadron. -

This led to the development and building of a large number of defensive structures varying from the Roman Wall to the medieval castles for which Northumberland is renowned, up to the twentieth century fortifications of pillboxes and nuclear bunkers. These structures cover a wide variety of types and design, reflecting the military engineering techniques of the time. The period covered in this book is from 1900 to 2000, the Twentieth century, a period of rapidly changing military threats and hardware. We have seen in the period the advent of the plane and the tank and the wane of the military threat from close quarters, to the development of the nuclear bomb and the long-range Cruise missile. In Tyne and Wear a large number of Military structures have been built in this period, these structures began with the redevelopment of the coastal batteries on the Tyne at the start of the century. The batteries built at both Tynemouth and South Shields were at the time “state of the art” with all new guns and emplacements. The next building period came with the onset of the First World War, when some new structures were build though little remains today. -

Scottish Victoria Cross Awards Corporal William Anderson, VC, 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, was born at Dallas, Elgin on 28 December 1882. He was the second son of Alexander Anderson, a Labourer, and Isabella (Bella) Anderson, of 79 North Road, Forres, where he was educated at Forres Academy. His siblings were James, Margaret and Alexander. After working as a Conductor at Glasgow Tramways Depot, he moved to London then enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment on 20 September 1905, serving in India, Egypt and South Africa. His brother, James, served in the same regiment. He was discharged to the Reserve in 1912 and worked at Elder Hospital, Govan, saving money so that he and his fiancee could emigrate to South Africa. However, before they could leave war broke out and he was called up as a reservist. He was mobilised and sent to his old battalion in 1914, where he was known as 'Jock'. Now a Corporal, on 5 October 1914, he embarked for Flanders with the four Companies of the 2nd Battalion. Two weeks later they were taking part in the First Battle of Ypres and involved in some of the fiercest fighting. The regiment was being supplied with 96,000 rounds of ammunition each night. By the end of this engagement Corporal Anderson was in charge of a bombing unit. The aim of a bombing unit was to gain access to an enemy trench, from which they would throw grenades round a corner, immediately following up the explosion with an attack with bayoneting, Captain Rollo and Corporal Anderson bludgeoning, shooting, bombing or taking resting at Fleurbaix in 1914.
