1 KSAZ/KUTP ‐ Phoenix, AZ This report covers the time period November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2007 (except where otherwise specifically noted). I. PROGRAMMING: a. Local Newscasts: KSAZ‐TV airs 40.5 hrs of local newscasts every week: Monday‐Friday: 5‐9am 12:00‐12:30pm 5:00‐6:00pm 6:00‐6:30pm (Effective starting 7/31/06) 9:00‐10:00pm 10:00‐10:30pm Saturday: 5:00‐6:00pm 9:00‐10:00pm 10:00‐10:30pm Sunday: 5:00‐6:00pm 9:00‐10:00pm 10:00‐10:30pm 10:30‐11:00pm (Sports Night effective 1/8/06) The station also repeats some of the newscasts during the week, in order to offer its audience a flexible schedule for viewing the news. b. Breaking News: KSAZ and KUTP broke into and/or preempted regularly scheduled programming on numerous occasions during the period covered by this report in order to bring its viewers breaking news or disaster information. This coverage included extended reporting on severe weather warnings, amber alerts, school closings, and other emergencies. A comprehensive list of cut‐ins and crawls is attached as Exhibit 1. c. Local News Stories: Provided below are examples of local news stories and special assignment stories aired on KSAZ during the report period: • Sex, Lies and Videotape‐ An investigation into whether apartment complex managers are providing truthful information about their tenants, especially sex offenders. • Choking Game—Advice to parents on what to watch for before their teenagers mistakenly kill themselves while playing a choking game. 2 • Missing Graves‐The story of one Phoenix family who could not find a relative’s gravel; KSAZ’s investigation revealed that the body had been moved and the headstone had been misplaced. • Other stories were aired, including a preview of the school bond issue A comprehensive list of the station’s local news stories is attached hereto as Exhibit 2. d. Political Coverage: Both KSAZ and KUTP have devoted extensive time to coverage of political issues important to their viewers. Several speeches delivered by President Bush were broadcast live, including a press conference in Tucson, where Mr. Bush discussed border security. Former President Bill Clinton was interviewed live, and experts discussed the enactment of new state laws of interest to the local community. KSAZ and KUTP covered local town hall meetings and debates, including: • Scottsdale Council debate about commuter planes at the airport • Southwest Conference meeting about illegal immigration • Press conference held by Gov. Napolitano to discuss I.D. thefts • Speech by President Bush in Tucson, discussing border security A complete list of public affairs programming is attached hereto as Exhibit 3. e. Public Affairs Shows: KSAZ airs a 30‐minute show every Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m., Newsmaker Sunday. The show discusses relevant community issues. A repeat aired on KSAZ through January 8, 2006 and then was moved to KUTP on Sunday mornings. Some of guests and/or issues covered in the report period are: • Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas • Discussion about the Trump Tower proposal • St. Mary’s Food Bank • Tsunamis KUTP is the home of the Phoenix Suns, the local professional basketball team. During the report period, all home games were aired live, and pre‐ 3 game and post‐game shows were produced in‐studio and broadcast live. KUTP also presents an annual holiday special, “Yule Log.” f. Local interest: Programs aired of local interest during the report period included: • Immigration march • Cesar Chavez Celebration • Rock and Roll Marathon • American Cancer Society’s Climb to Conquer • Chandler’s 4th of July Celebration g. Awards and Recognition: 3 Associated Press Awards (2006) 5 Emmy Awards (2007) A comprehensive list of awards and recognition during the report period is attached as Exhibit 4. II. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS (PSAS): For the period January 8‐21, 2007, KSAZ‐aired 108 minutes of PSAs on behalf of organizations and important local issues including Girls and Boys Town, high school dropouts, identity theft, and literacy. During the same period, KUTP aired 81:25 minutes of PSAs at no charge. For the period June 11‐24, 2007, KSAZ‐aired 136:35 minutes of PSAs at no charge, about topics such as college education, dental care, Diabetes, drug abuse and support and fatherhood. During the same period, KUTP aired 90:55 minutes of PSAs at no charge. A comprehensive list of PSAs is attached as Exhibit 5. III. PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY Both KSAZ's and KUTP's on‐air newscasters and behind‐the‐scenes employees have made a commitment to participate in the Phoenix community. The stations' employees take part in a variety of events and causes in and around Phoenix, such as: • Host and steering committee member, Native Americans in broadcasting • Principal for a day, Pinnacle High School • Speaker and emcee, Walk to Cure Diabetes Awards Ceremony • Volunteer, Phoenix Children’s Hospital 4 Employees participate on the boards or are members of diversity organizations: • Cesar Chavez Foundation • Latino Institute • National Association Hispanic Journalists • National Association of Black Journalists KSAZ and KUTP constantly gather information about the needs and interests of the members of their community, particularly through participation in ascertainment meetings hosted by the Arizona Broadcasters Association. These meetings bring together a broad mix of community leaders, including state and local government representatives, non‐profit executive directors and key representatives from minority interest groups. A comprehensive list of ascertainments during the report period is attached as Exhibit 6. IV. WEBSITE Myfoxphoenix.com launched on September 15, 2006. A stand‐alone staff is assigned to the site seven days a week, and other members of the News Department are required to contribute content on a regular basis. The site is primarily designed to provide the viewing audience with immediate updates on important news stories, emergency situations, weather warnings, election results and any other information relevant to the community. News coverage includes live streaming of big events and breaking stories as well as taped material and text. “Web Alerts” appear on FOX 10 during entertainment programming directing viewers to the web when breaking news warrants. The site includes comprehensive weather and traffic modules that provide information 24/7. The site has become a community forum, giving viewers and KSAZ on‐air talent an opportunity to post stories, opinions, photos or other information. In addition, we have hosted a number of “live chats” giving users the opportunity to question experts on a variety of topics of interest (i.e., the recent dog food recall, mortgage rate questions, etc.). While complete local newscasts are not archived for future viewing, most long‐ form stories (packages and live segments) are archived for access on‐demand.
