Benefactors of Trinity College Dublin Trinity Development and Alumni is administered by Trinity Foundation, an independent charity (CHY10898) established in 1994, and charged with responsibility for, and exists solely to support, the development (fundraising) and alumni relations activities of Trinity College Dublin. Trinity Development and Alumni was established with the objective of raising funds to support the development of Trinity College Dublin. It plays a vital role in ensuring that Trinity College has the financial resources to remain a leading, internationally recognised university. In the nine month period, 1 October 2018 to 30 June 2019, Trinity Development and Alumni was successful in raising funds (cash and pledges) of €28.2 million from 1,966 donors. The Trustees of Trinity Foundation join the Provost, Fellows and Scholars of Trinity College in thanking all supporters of the University. Significant philanthropic donations, which have been used to support College activities, were received and this funding is a testament both to the quality of the projects and to the generosity of our dedicated supporters. It transpires that many prominent Irish public broadcasting figures are as happy with part-time market opportunities as Network 2’s rogue builder, Dustin the Turkey, or the average plumber in the nation’s black economy. National radio success (and TV failure) Gerry Ryan was in the ‘stable of stars’ run by Carol Associates and could command thousands for endorsing a product. He was appointed Attorney General of Ireland in the governments of Garret FitzGerald, before becoming European Commissioner for Competition in the first Delors Commission (1985-89). He subsequently became Director General of GATT (now WTO). Peter Sutherland is currently serving as Chairman of BP, of Goldman Sachs International and is the UN Special Representative for Migration. We met him at his house in Dublin, prior to the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. What made you such a convinced European? From a very early stage, as a university student already, I was a committed European. We could see at first hand in this country the enormous suffering created by extreme nationalism which in turn was a reaction to injustice. Nationalism – often combined with religion, as was the case in Northern Ireland – has often led to conflict throughout history. According to one opinion poll I saw years ago the Irish are the proudest people of all; they have the greatest sense of their own nationality.

It is a rare moment indeed when, in the crowded television, radio and print media schedules, something approaching a united front occurs, and only one subject is debated, only one topic is talked about, everywhere. The number of times this has happened could be counted on the fingers of one hand. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales was one such media moment. For those of us who were not around for the death and funeral of John F. Kennedy, this was the first media-event we experienced, in terms of the tragic death and funeral of such a world famous person.

Talk Radio Sara O’Sullivan Talk is the mainstay of Irish daytime radio. The majority of Irish people listening to radio in the mornings listen to a talk radio show on either RTÉ Radio 1 or 2FM. Talk accompanies the routine activities of these listeners and is the backdrop to work both in the home and in other settings. Talk radio is seen to compliment news and current affairs output and so to contribute to RTÉ’s public service brief. The morning talk radio shows on RTÉ Radio 1 feature the usual suspects, most typically representatives of political parties, interest groups or other organisations being interviewed about the news stories of the day. In contrast The Gerry Ryan Show and Liveline feature a mix of light and serious topics and the majority of the speakers are ordinary people rather than experts.
