Friday, January 31, 2003 - Page 3 GUANTANAMO SAY GTMO Celebrates Black History Month A History of Black History Month Black History Month is an occasion to commemorate the collective intellectual, cultural, social, economic and political experience of Africans in the Americas. A variety of programs including lectures, exhibitions, banquets and a multitude of cultural activities are presented throughout the month of February to commemorate the occasion. Many ask why celebrate Black History Month? The answer rest in American History. It is important to recall how Black Americans were portrayed in early America. Black Americans were classified as a race that had not made any contribution to human civilization. Black Americans were continually dehumanized and relegated to the position of non-citizens and often defined as fractions of humans. It is within this social climate that Black Americans were often absent from the history books. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. A Harvard trained Ph.D.; Dr. Woodson was disturbed to find that history books largely ignored the Black Americans. When blacks were mentioned it was in ways that consigned them to inferior and demeaning social status. Under Woodson's leadership, "Negro History Week" was first celebrated in 1926. It was established to promote the scientific study of the African's experience in America. It's objective was to give an objective and academic accounting of Black Americans contributions to American and World history. In 1976, in celebration of the Bicentennial, Black History Week was expanded to Black History Month. The month of February is significant in African American history because it is the birth month of several great African American pioneers and institutions. These include the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Eubie Blake, NAACP and the first Pan African Congress. What do you do when your music career is about to take off and suddenly you are called on to serve your country overseas? According to Army Specialist Bryan Randall, better known to his fans as Jezt Bryan, the answer is easy - you look for the silver lining and make the most of it. How can Randall be so sure of his answer? Because that is exactly what he did. "I knew that deployment was a possibility, but didn't really expect it to come," he said. "When the announcement came, I was shocked and a little down." Before deploying to JTF-GTMO from the 300 Military Police Unit based in Inskter, Mich., Randall was working on releasing and promoting his R&B/Hip Hop album "Red Eyes" and trying to develop a deal to go tour with music group Fire & Ice. When tour managers learned of his deployment, they decided it not to include Randall for fear of having to cancel concert dates. "I basically had to put my career on hold," said Randall. "When got here I was really depressed about it all, but I prayed and asked God to help me find the positive light. And then, like the speed of light, the answer was there." "My friends here had been encouraging me to put on a show, but I had been reluctant," Randall explained. But then, Randall says, he started seeing all the benefits of doing exactly what his friends and co-workers were suggesting. "I saw the chance to expand my audience to a more diverse group of people," Randall said. "You have all types of people here and if I can get just one of them to listen to my music, something they haven't heard before, then maybe I can develop a bigger following." Randall took his idea and CD to MWR Above: "Red-eyed" Jezt Byran (aka Specialist Byran Randall) stikes a pose for his Director Craig Basel. Liking what he heard, Basel helped him set publicity photo. He is shown here with hosts Yarnell label and discovered he could help out some Rickett (far right) and Kevin Porter. other up-and-coming artists by including them in his show. "My goal became to try to put on a dynamic show and get the entire crowd to like my music," said Randall. Did he succeed? Randall certainly believes he did. "I think we did very well," he said. "When the show was over, I think I signed more autographs than ever before and sold more CDs than before." Randall went on to say that as a result of the show he may also get the opportunity to go on tour with Armed Forces Entertainment. Even with a CD out, a successful military concert and the possibility of getting a chance to tour within the armed forces, Randall says he is still far from being the success he wants to be. "When I have a nice home and car and don't have to worry about financial security - When I don't have to leave the stage on Saturday, and empty trash and clean toilets on Monday, then I see Jezt Bryan, page 9 Page 8 - Friday, January 31, 2003 I GAZETTE
