Professor of Viola RATTANAI BAMPENYOU (D.M.A., Instrumental Performance) A Performance Guide to The Multi-Movement (December 2012) Guitar Sonatas of Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani Abstract of a doctoral essay at the University of Miami. Doctoral essay supervised by Dr. Rene Gonzalez. No. of pages in text. (201) The purpose of this study is to thoroughly analyze and to create a performance guide of the multi-movement guitar sonatas by Fernando Sor and Mauro Giulian. The works include Sonatas, Opp. 22 and 25 by Sor, and Sonata, Op. 15 by Giuliani. Although the composers are well known to the guitar community, the number of detailed studies of these works is still limited. The present essay is a result of the desire to study them. It contains a short history of the origin of the six-string guitar, the biographies of Sor and Giuliani, and also a brief review of selected writings on sonata form that will help the reader understand the musical form better. The main portion of this study consists of detailed analyses and a performance guide to the sonatas. Theoretical, technical, and stylistic issues are addressed in depth. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express great thank to the Thai government and the citizens of Thailand for the enormous financial support during the course of my study. My deep gratitude also goes to my parents, Lt. Gen. Ronnachai and Saowanee Bampenyou, for their support, inspiration and encouragement. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page LIST OF MUSICAL EXAMPLES. ............................................................................. vi LIST OF TABLES ....................................................................................................... xii Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION... ........................................................................................ 1 The Guitar in the Early Nineteenth Century and Sonata Form ……………… 1 Fernando Sor…………………………………………………………………. 5 Mauro Giuliani…………………………..……………………………………. 6 Justification of the Study …..…………………..…….………………………. 8 Purpose of the Study.....………………………..…….………………………. 9 Organization of the Study.....…………………..…….………………………. 9 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE .......................................................................... 10 Sonata Form ..................................................................................................... 10 The Multi-movement Guitar Sonatas of Sor and Giuliani ............................... 29 3 METHOD ........................................................................................................ 35 Data Gathering Procedure ................................................................................ 35 Analyses ........................................................................................................... 36 Performance Guide .......................................................................................... 37 Organization of the Study ................................................................................ 37 4 THE EMERGENCE OF THE SIX-STRING GUITAR AND BIOGRAPHIES OF FERNANDO SOR AND MAURO GUILIANI ....................................... 38 Emergence of the Six-string Guitar ................................................................. 38 Fernando Sor .................................................................................................... 45 Mauro Giuliani ................................................................................................. 52 5 ANALYSES ..................................................................................................... 62 Sor's Sonata in C, Op. 22 ................................................................................. 62 Sor's Sonata in C, Op. 25 ................................................................................. 93 Giuliani's Sonata in C, Op. 15 .......................................................................... 121 The Comparison of Sor and Giuliani's Sonata Style in Their Multi-movement Sonatas ............................................................................................................. 150 iv Chapter 6 PERFORMANCE GUIDE .............................................................................. 162 Sor's Sonata in C, Op. 22 ................................................................................. 162 Sor's Sonata in C, Op. 25 ................................................................................. 184 Giuliani's Sonata in C, Op. 15 .......................................................................... 190 7 FINAL REMARKS ......................................................................................... 198 BIBLIOGRAPHY…………........ ................................................................................ 199 v LIST OF MUSICAL EXAMPLES Example Page 2.1. МUSIC SUMMER FESTIVALS AS PROMOTERS OF THE SPA CULTURAL TOURISM: FESTIVAL OF CLASSICAL MUSIC VRNJCI Smiljka Isaković1, Jelena Borović-Dimić2 Abstract This paper is dedicated to the music summer festivals, a hallmark of the local community and the holder of the economic development of the region and the society, from ancient times to the present day. Special emphasis is placed on the International Festival of classical music "Vrnjci", held in Belimarković mansion in July, organized by the Homeland Мuseum – Castle of Culture of Vrnjaĉka Banja. A dramatic development of high technologies brought forth a new era based on conceptual creativity. Leisure time is prolonged, while tourism as one of the activities of spending leisure time is changing from passive to active. The cultural sector is becoming an important partner in the economic development of countries and cultural tourism is gaining in importance. Festival tourism in this country must be supported by the wider community and the state because the quality of cultural events makes us an equal competitor on the global tourism market. Keywords: cultural tourism, festivals, art, music, local self governments. Cultural Tourism The middle of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries can be called the period of tourism, since Stendhal popularized this term in France with his book "Memoirs of a tourist" (1838) and Englishman Thomas Cook opened his travel agency in 1841. Modern tourism experienced its first expansion between 1850 and 1870, enabled by the major railways networking in Europe

Prof. Andreas Treske June 2020 Monitor is a re-imagination of a clock tower, which re-conceptualizes the passing of time in a way that all moving elements inside the city outdoors become the units of the timekeeping activity. Abandoning the conventional approaches that frame time as a homogeneous entity, I make use of Bergson’s description of dura, and rethink the so- called homogeneity rather as a heterogeneous structure composed of distinct durations that are constantly intersecting with each other, and, produce infinite amount of arbitrary arrangements. This thesis offers a concept of an urban media sculpture that mirrors the movement of the people in outdoor settings, by collecting the real-time data from public monitoring systems.

  • The Peformative Grotesquerie of the Crucifixion of Jesus
THE GROTESQUE CROSS: THE PERFORMATIVE GROTESQUERIE OF THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS Hephzibah Darshni Dutt A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2015 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Charles Kanwischer Graduate Faculty Representative Eileen Cherry Chandler Marcus Sherrell © 2015 Hephzibah Dutt All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor In this study I argue that the crucifixion of Jesus is a performative event and this event is an exemplar of the Grotesque. To this end, I first conduct a dramatistic analysis of the crucifixion of Jesus, working to explicate its performativity. Viewing this performative event through the lens of the Grotesque, I then discuss its various grotesqueries, to propose the concept of the Grotesque Cross.
