Ganic Extradition Hearings Draw to Close

By Nidzara Ahmetasevic

he last hearing in the extradition case of wartime Bosnian leader Ejup Ganic was held Ton July 14 before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. However, Ganic’s defence team does not expect the decision on Serbia’s request for his extradition to be delivered soon. “It is very unlikely that we will get a decision for at least a week - possibly two,” defence attorney Stephen Gentle told Prishtina Insight on the last day of the hearings. Ganic was arrested on March 1 in London on an arrest warrant from Serbia, where he is considered a suspect in a war crimes case. Serbia has requested his extradition to face trial in Belgrade. Serbia suspects Ganic of war crimes related to his alleged involvement in an attack on a convoy of the Yugoslav People’s Army, JNA, as it was leaving Sarajevo on May 3, 1992. The Serbian prosecution claims that 18 soldiers were killed and 22 wounded in the attack, but the number is contested. Ejup Ganic was the head of the Bosnian Presidency for 48 hours at the time of the incident, taking the place of the late Alija Izetbegovic who had been kidnapped by the JNA and was being held hostage. Ganic’s defence team claims that the extradition request is politically motivated, a claim that that was echoed by Christian Schwarz-Schilling, a for- Women mourn their loved ones at the 15th anniversary of the massacre at Srebrenica, Bosnia mer High Representative in Bosnia who also testi- fied as a witness in the Ganic hearings. he fact that Tony Blair’s visit to Kosovo was a historic moment is Tabsolutely indisputable, but the underlying question is: “How many Thaci’s does it take to make a Tony Blair?” It was a display of spectacular hospitality by cheering crowds, the same ones that eleven years ago welcomed this man with sombre faces in refugee camps in Macedonia. The reporting in the Kosovo media and the ceremony of the University of Prishtina must have ignited nostalgia of Blair’s Salad Days of 1997 when he assumed power as the new Prime Minister of the UK. As I was watching the coverage of Blair’s visit, I remembered the conversation with my history teacher in England Mr Phillips, who, back in 2007, said to me that he expects Tony Blair to pay a visit to Kosovo very soon. Those were the days when Blair was preparing to step down as the PM.
