Hadley v Cockfosters Spartan South Midlands League

Premier Division Wednesday 21st November 2018 7.30pm, Brickfield Lane

Good evening and welcome to this evening’s Spartan South Midlands Premier Division game against Cockfosters FC. We hope their players, officials and supporters have an enjoyable short stay with us and have a safe journey home later. We also extend a very warm welcome to our three match officials.

We host our friends from Cockfosters tonight, in what will be our “derby meeting” of the season with our near neighbours. Cockfosters have had a difficult start to the season and currently sit in 19th position. They had an incredible 5-5 draw 2 weeks ago with Crawley Green and will be fired up tonight, to get their season back on track.

In our last game, we extended our winning run to a fantastic 9 games. An excellent second half comeback saw us overcome with a 2-1 win thanks to a Paul Wright penalty and a winner from Manny Hammond. It is great credit to all the players and management, that we are currently sitting in 3rd position and lets see if we can make it 10 tonight.

I would like to wish good luck to both sides this evening and hope all of you enjoy the game and get behind the Bricks!

Guy Slee Chairman, Hadley FC

FACING US TODAY— COCKFOSTERS FC

The Club was originally formed in season 1920/21 by local residents and the ground allocated to the Club by Lady Bevan, from her family estate. The first league entered was the local Barnet League and moderate success was enjoyed as the Club moved through the lower divisions. The 1930’s saw the original club joined by the successful Cockfosters Juniors and the “new” Club joined the stronger League. Promotion was again achieved through the lower divisions, culminating in season 1938-39 with the first of two “trebles” won in the Club’s history, winning the Wood Green League’s Premier Division, the League Cup and the Barnet Cup.

After the war the Club moved it’s two sides into the Northern Suburban Intermediate League, a very strong local league of that time. Season 1946 -47 saw the Club finish as runner-up in the League’s First Division and promoted to the Premier Division. The next season saw relegation, but in 1949-50 the First Division title came to Chalk Lane and in the very next season the runners-up spot in the Premier Division. The late 1940’s also saw success in a number of local cup competitions, but for most of the 1950’s the Club struggled with no honours coming it’s way.

The start of the 1960’s saw a re-awakening of the Club and the Northern Suburban League’s First Division title again came to Chalk Lane, with the Premier Division Championship following in the very next campaign. The Barnet Cup and the Barnet Charity Cup finals were reached regular- ly with both trophies being won on a couple of occasions. Season 1966/67 saw the Club gain entry to the Herts County League and the very first season saw the league’s Division One title at Chalk Lane. Twenty five seasons were spent in the Herts Senior County League and all, but the very first were spent in the league’s Premier Division. In that time the London F.A Intermediate Cup was won twice, the Herts F.A Intermediate Cup once, with three other appearances in the final. The Herts Senior County League Cup (The Aubrey Cup) was won twice, with two other losing finals played. In season 1978-79 the Club won their second “treble” – the Herts County League’s Premier Division title, the Aubrey Cup and the Herts F.A. Intermediate Cup under the managership of Roy Reeder,a former player and Captain. The following nine seasons saw the Premier Division title won twice more, both under different managers, firstly in season 1980-81, when former Barnet player Jeff Voyce was in charge and then again in 1983-84 with Colin Bell at the helm. During this period the Aubrey Cup was again won and the Club twice finished as runner-up in the Premier Division.

During the twenty five years in the Herts Senior County League the Club’s Reserve team also enjoyed a great deal of success with an appear- ance in the final of the Herts F.A. Junior Cup. The League’s Reserve Cup was won, with two other appearances in the final. The Division One title was won twice and the runners-up spot achieved on three other occasions. Throughout most of the 1980’s the First AND Reserve teams were rarely out of the top four positions in their respective divisions when the final league tables were published. In 1991 the Club gained “Senior Status” from it’s parent F.A. (London) and an application was accepted by the London Spartan League for entry into their Premier Division. Following the amalgamation of the Spartan League with the South Midlands - to form the Spartan South Midlands League - in season 1997-98. The Club failed to retain it’s Premier Division status and were placed in the SSM League’s Senior Division (now known as Division One). In 1998-1999 the Club switched their Reserves from the County League, where they had played for the previous eight seasons and had won the Senior Reserve Division once and been runners-up twice, into the Spartan South Midland League and were placed into Division One of the Reserve Section.

In Season 2005-06 the Club introduced a Youth team at under 18 level, competing in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. For Season 2006-07 former player David Craig was appointed as Club and First Team Manager, assisted by two other former players Mark Standen and Ray Farley. This resulted in an immediate upturn in the Club's fortunes with the First Team being promoted into the Premier Division and the Reserve team being promoted back to Reserve Division One. With the elevation into the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League the Club was accepted into the FA Challenge Cup for the first time in their history.

Following a poor run of results during the early months of Season 2008-09 the resignation of the above management team was accepted and they were replaced by Neil Ewing assisted by Ron Syrett, who had for the previous three season been in charge of our very successful reserve team. Despite struggling in the league for most of this season the Club did manage to avoid finishing in a relegation position. However due to planning refusals by the London Borough of Enfield, the Club was unable to upgrade their facilities to the level required by the Football Associa- tion for clubs competing in the SSM League’s Premier Division and were demoted back down to Division One for the 2009-10 season. Following disappointing results during the early part of the 2010-11 season, the management team of Neil Ewing and Ron Syrett stood down and were replaced by Mark Adams assisted by Vince Purdue, who had previously had a successful period managing Northwood Reserves in the Suburban league. In the October of the 2011-12 campaign Mark Adams resigned due to family commitments. Vince Purdue and then Don Bennett had periods in charge of the First Team, but by mid-March '13 both left due to personal commitments. The Club promoted Reserve Team Manager Mick Roche to First Team Manager from mid-March '13.

Season 2012/13 saw Mick Roche continuing at the helm, assisted by Dave Clark and Fabio Valenti. A successful season culminated in taking the Division One Runners-Up spot on goal difference & thereby gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The side also had some good cup runs, reaching the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Vase, losing at SSML Premier Division title contenders Oxhey Jets, the semi finals of both the SSML Challenge Trophy & Division One Cup and were finalists in the South Midlands Floodlight Cup,losing at Oxhey Jets. Steve Rolfe joined the Club from Cheshunt FC to take charge of the Reserves in the SSM League's Reserve Division One. The side finished in 5th place & also reached the London FA Intermediate Cup semi-finals. Our Under 18 youth team, managed by Paul Boxer assisted by Steve Foot, competed in the Olympian Division of the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League.

2013/14 saw the First Team back in the SSML Premier Division after a gap of four seasons with Mick Roche continuing as First Team Manager, again assisted by Dave Clark and Fabio Valenti. The season proved to be a successful one, the side finished in a very creditable 8th place & won the SSM League's Challenge Trophy & the South Midlands Floodlight (Senior) Cup. Steve Rolfe continued as Reserve Team Manager, this time assisted by Chris Agapiou. The side finished 3rd in the SSML's Reserve Division One & were finalists in the South Midlands Floodlight (Reserve) Cup. Our Under 18 youth team, managed by Paul Boxer & assisted by Steve Foot, were winners of the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League's Nemean Division & were runners-up in the League's Divisional Winners Play-Off Final. The season saw our Youth Section enhanced with a get together with Whetstone Wanderers. Following a meeting back in the summer of 2013 between the two clubs' committees an agree- ment was reached for the Wanderers' Under 15 & Under 16 teams to play under the Cockfosters FC name in the Eastern Junior Alliance League. It is hoped this new 'affiliation” will be of great benefit to both clubs & should provide a continuity of players moving up into our Under 18's, Re- serves & hopefully our First Team.

Season 2014/15 started with Mick Roche continuing as First Team Manager assisted by Fabio Valenti & Peter Grant. Dave Clark having to step down due to his work commitments. There was a new Reserve Team Manager - Mark Mezen - who had been involved in local football, both as a player & as a coach, for several seasons. Following our 'get together' with Whetstone Wanderers last season, we now have have a strong youth section to the Club. In addition to the Under 18s, who are managed again by Paul Boxer, assisted by Steve Foot, & playing in the Southern Counties Youth League, there will again be Under 15s & 16s sides competing in the prestigious Eastern Counties Alliance League & they will be joined this campaign by an Under 13 side. For our 'senior' sides season 2014-15 proved to be an extremely difficult one. Around mid-season the entire management team together with virtually the whole of the First Team squad moved to Edgware Town. This resulted in several changes to both management and players for both First and Reserve teams for the remainder of the season. Fortunately our First Team managed to retain their Premier Division status within the SSML. The one bright spot for the season was the performances of our Youth Section, Our U18 side won the Olympian Division of the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League and then went on to beat Luton Town in the League Divisional Play-off Final. The U15 side finished runners-up in the Herts Division of the Eastern Junior Alliance League, whilst the U13 side finished in a very credita- ble 3rd place in the Essex Division of the EJA and won the Herts FA Sunday Youth (U13) County Cup. Season 2015-16 hopefully sees a ‘new beginning’ for the Club, former player Dean Barker, who holds the Club record for most goals (48) in a season, having been appointed manager and has put together a very promising management structure for both our First and Reserve teams, whilst the management of our youth teams (U18’s, U16’s and U14’s) remains unchanged. Previous meetings between the two clubs

League Roundup

Saturday 17th November

PREMIER DIVISION

Tring Athletic and Biggleswade FC continue to rule the roost in the Premier Divi- sion as both recorded wins on Saturday, leaders Tring Athletic winning 3-0 at London Colney whilst Biggleswade FC secured a 4-1 home success over lowly Harpenden Town. Hadley and Arlesey Town head the chasing pack, Hadley coming from a goal behind at the break to win 2-1 at relegation threatened Wembley while on front of the day’s biggest crowd (139) Arlesey Town also overturned a half time deficit at home to defeat another of the relegation threat- ened clubs Cockfosters 3-1. Life at the bottom is often cruel as Stotfold found out again when conceding a late winner to lose by the odd goal in five at Edg- ware Town. A old favourite of the SSML returned on Saturday, this time in the colours of North Greenford United FC, however prolific striker Lewis Putman failed to get on the scoresheet as his new club suffered a 2-3 home defeat against Leverstock Green, the winner coming in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The day’s biggest Premier Division winners were Oxhey Jets, fresh from their week off following their special Remembrance game last week they over- came visiting London Tigers 5-0. Biggleswade United made it six league games without defeat as they continue their climb up the table with a 3-0 home success over Leighton Town, a result that lifted the hosts into sixth place. Elsewhere Potton United won 2-1 at Colney Heath and Crawley Green and Baldock Town battled out a 1-1 draw.
