  • The Rehearsal for Truth Theater Festival to Present Spring Weekend: a Selection of European Stage Readings in Nyc, Bohemian National Hall, May 10-12, 2019
THE REHEARSAL FOR TRUTH THEATER FESTIVAL TO PRESENT SPRING WEEKEND: A SELECTION OF EUROPEAN STAGE READINGS IN NYC, BOHEMIAN NATIONAL HALL, MAY 10-12, 2019. ROMANIA: I HOPE I WOULDN’T MEET MYSELF TODAY SATURDAY, MAY 11 at 8PM In spring 2019, the REHEARSAL FOR TRUTH theater festival, honoring Vaclav Havel, will add a weekend of contemporary European stage readings to their yearly program. The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation (VHLF) partners with the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association to create a showcase of young European playwrights. The selection process includes choosing Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian and Slovak plays that have been translated into English and reflect on current social and political issues of the region. The Romanian full length production is entitled I Hope I Wouldn’t Meet Myself Today by Herta Müller, Nobel Prize recipient, and is translated, performed, and directed by Simona Maicanescu. Synopsis The play is set in Eastern Europe before the fall of the Berlin Wall where Lili works in a Romanian factory making fine men's overcoats for export to Italy. Her love life is a mess-she has a live-in male friend who spends all of his time and most of her money drinking, the day away. Lili also has a secret; she inserts notes which say “Marry me!” and include her name and address into the linings of the coats she sews. When her notes are discovered, Lili knows she could face unemployment or even imprisonment. She is summoned to the inspector’s office to receive the verdict. But the inspector takes a personal interest in her case; that is, he takes a personal interest in her.

  • RICHARD WAGNER and HERTA MÜLLER by ANCA-ELENA LUCA
CULTURAL IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY GERMAN-ROMANIAN LITERATURE: RICHARD WAGNER AND HERTA MÜLLER by ANCA-ELENA LUCA HOLDEN (Under the Direction of Martin Kagel) ABSTRACT In my dissertation, I discuss literary representations of cultural identity formation and dissolution in selected works by contemporary German-Romanian authors Richard Wagner and Herta Müller. Wagner and Müller are ethnic Germans who emerged as prominent authors under Ceauşescu‘s dictatorship. Along with other German-Romanian authors, they were part of the literary group Aktionsgruppe Banat (1972-75), one of the most important dissident groups in Romania. In their writings, Wagner and Müller openly criticized the communist regime. They also questioned the cultural identity of the Banat- Swabian communities in which they grew up. As a result of their political opposition to the regime, they were harassed by the Securitate and banned from publishing. Because of their German heritage, political experience under the communist regime, and their status as immigrants and political refugees in West Germany, Wagner and Müller occupy a unique position in contemporary German society and culture. In their works, they challenge the nation-state as the basis of German nationalism and question cultural definitions of ―Germanness‖ based on biological, territorial, and state- centered concepts. While Wagner‘s primary focus is on the cultural, linguistic, and political challenges that East-Central European ethnic German immigrants face in West Germany, Müller‘s works concentrate almost exclusively on the oppression and persecution under Ceauşescu‘s dictatorship and the tyrannical atmosphere of the Banat- Swabian village. In my analysis of Wagner‘s fiction, I discuss three figures of Banat-Swabian writers who construct personalized cultural identities and attempt to re-invent themselves as writers during Ceauşescu‘s regime and after immigration to West Germany.

This identity – seeking tendency prevails in each and every human leading them to explore themselves. A study of Herta Muller‟s fictional works brings us closer to the divided post-war world during the cold war. Kiss, Ernő Csongor. “Herta Müller’s Atemschaukel (The Hunger Angel) in the Context of Twentieth-Century Forced Migration in East-Central Europe.” Hungarian Cultural Studies. e-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association, Volume 11 (2018) DOI: 10.5195/ahea.2018.323 Herta Müller’s Atemschaukel (The Hunger Angel) in the Context of Twentieth-Century Forced Migration in East-Central Europe Ernő Csongor Kiss Abstract: My paper elaborates Herta Müller’s Gulag novel, Atemschaukel (2009; published in English under the title of The Hunger Angel in 2012), in the historical, political and ethical contexts of twentieth-century forced migrations by placing the novel among those exodus narratives that have unfolded the parallel history of Romanian- German and Jewish communities during and after the Second World War. Given the fact that the memory of forced migrations and of the Gulag is a “soft memory” (Etkind 2004), there are no consensual remembrance policies in any concerned East or East-Central European country regarding their history. In the absence of official ownership, the legacies of these colletive and individual traumas became predominantly text-based (rather than image- or monument-based). One must therefore study those aesthetical forms by which literature is able to encode the physical, psychological, moral, social-political conditions of any totalitarian rule—and thus, attempt to establish the perceptional and sensational frames on which the universe of the Gulag can be re-constructed. Accordingly, my paper gives an amplifying view of the tendencies by which Müller’s Atemschaukel both preserves and subtly re-orchestrates the conventions of the genre of the Gulag novel.
