Dance Gavin Dance sind grell und laut, machen eine Mischung aus Post-Screamo-Hard-Emo- Mathcore-Soul-Funk-Musik und wer ihre Platten nicht ein paar Mal hört, kommt niemals hinter all die musikalischen Wendungen und Finessen, die die Kalifornier hineingepackt haben. Das macht ja gerade den Spaß aus und es macht sich vor allem live bezahlt, wenn die Jungs trotz ständiger Line-up-Wechsel präzise wie ein Uhrwerk ihre Songs rocken. Die einzigen Konstanten sind der Gitarrist Will Swan (der aber auch schon gegrowlt und gerappt hat) mit seinen slicken Riffs und der Maschinengewehrschlagzeuger Matt Mingus. Und natürlich die Musik, die viele Einflüsse aufnimmt und in die Post-Hardcore- Gewalt integriert, die dann ungebremst ihren Weg bahnt. Nicht umsonst zählen Dance Gavin Dance so unterschiedliche Musiker wie Radiohead, MF Doom, Earth, Wind And Fire und At The Drive-In zu ihren Vorbildern. Auch wenn Johnny Craig nicht mehr singt, der mit seiner markanten Stimme den souligen Einschlag in die Vocals gebracht hat, sind doch etliche Elemente der Black Music unüberhörbar. Im Mai 2016 haben Dance Gavin Dance das Live-Album „Tree City Sessions“ veröffentlicht, auf dem etliche der populärsten Stücke aus der Bandgeschichte vertreten sind und vom aktuellen Sänger Tilian Pearson kongenial interpretiert werden. Noch besser aber ist es, die Band live zu sehen.
