Walker, ASC — stars Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford and was promoted as a re-teaming of the stars of the prior hit Gilda (1946). Considered a “comeback” effort following Hayworth’s difficult marriage to Prince Aly Khan, Trinidad was the star's first picture in four years and Columbia Pictures wanted one of their finest cinematographers to shoot it. Beatty (1990).jpg Directed by and starring Warren Beatty, Dick Tracy (1990) was a faithful ode to the timeless detective comic strip. To that end, Beatty and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC — seen here setting a shot during production — rendered the film almost entirely in reds, yellows and blues to replicate the look of the comic. Storaro earned an Oscar nomination for his efforts. The two filmmakers had previously collaborated on the period drama Reds and later on the political comedy Bullworth. Cries and Whispers - L. ASC History Timeline
American Society of Cinematographers Historical Timeline Compiled by David E. Williams February, 1913 — The Cinema Camera Club of New York and the Static Camera Club of America in Hollywood are organized by their respective members. Each consists of cinematographers who sought to share ideas about advancing the art and craft of moviemaking. By 1916, the two organizations exchange membership reciprocity, but they both disband in February of 1918, after five years of struggle. January 8, 1919 — The American Society of Cinematographers is chartered by the state of California. Founded by 15 members, it is dedicated to “advancing the art through artistry and technological progress … to help perpetuate what has become the most important medium the world has known.” Members of the ASC subsequently play a seminal role in virtually every technological advance that has affects the art of telling stories with moving images. Philip E. Rosen is elected be the first president of the ASC. June 20, 1920 — The first documented appearance of the “ASC” credential for a cinematographer in a theatrical film’s titles is the silent western Sand, produced by and starring William S. Hart and shot by Joe August, ASC. November 1, 1920 — The first issue of American Cinematographer is published. Volume One, #1 consists of just four pages, reporting on news and assignments of ASC members. The newsletter is published twice monthly. October 1, 1921 — American Cinematographer becames a genuine magazine — boasting 16 pages — and is published every month since. Over the decades and under the guidence of several editors, AC grows into the leading professional cinematography publication of the world and earns multiple awards for excellence.

Page 1 of 12 EXHIBITION FEATURES FILMS FROM A DIVERSITY OF GENRES ABOUT WARS THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE For Immediate Release September 2000 The Imaginary War September 14–October 15, 2000 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters 1 and 2 The Imaginary War is an international selection of films about fictional wars that served as warnings or critiques of real wars. The exhibition includes a range of films, from Aelita (1924), Yakov Protazanov’s fantasy of a proletarian uprising on Mars, and the Marx Brothers’s anti- totalitarian burlesque Duck Soup (1933), to Stanley Kubrick’s atomic satire Dr. Strangelove (1964) and Barry Levinson’s prescient Wag the Dog (1997). The Imaginary War, part of The Museum of Modern Art’s Open Ends exhibition, is on view from September 14 to October 15, 2000. The program was organized by Joshua Siegel, Assistant Curator, Department of Film and Video. The Imaginary War was inspired by a comment Jean-Luc Godard made about his 1963 film Les Carabiniers, an anti-war allegory that shatters all conventions of the genre by blending documentary actuality and fanciful invention: “In dealing with war, I followed a very simple rule. I assumed I had to explain to children not only what war is, but what all wars have been …rather as if I were illustrating the many—yet always drearily familiar—faces of war by projecting imagerie sheets through a magic lantern, in the manner of the early cameramen who used to fabricate newsreels.” The Imaginary War features a diversity of genres—science fiction and fantasy, slapstick comedy and the political thriller, pseudo-documentary and experimental and animation works.
