Dear Dick I refer to the opinion piece by Peter James in the recent edition of your magazine and his comments about not being invited to grade the DVD of his favourite film. The film is BLACK ROBE, and I am the "very experienced" but unnamed producer referred to. Characteristically, Peter did not tell me he was going into print about the incident, but the matter needs clarifying. BLACK ROBE has been available for home viewing, first on VHS and then on DVD since shortly after its release in 1992. It has been released on video and DVD all over the world. Not until I did Peter the courtesy of inviting him to join the commentary group of Bruce Beresford, Aden Young and myself for a new Australian DVD by a new distributor, did he ever show any interest at all in the DVD master. If as he says he has "dreamt of getting into a telecine suite and putting the finishing touches to it" it is news to me, and I have seen him often enough in the ensuing twenty years. And what "finishing touches"? Didn't he do the work at the time? All my films have been released on DVD and none of the cinematographers - who include Don McAlpine and Geoff Burton - have ever asked to be involved. And how would Peter James propose to regrade for the French release, or the Patagonian release? Or even the Canadian release - all from different masters? Has he ever been contacted by the Canadian co-producer and asked to regrade the picture for DVD? I'll bet my knickers he hasn't.

Happy navigating your way around town! Hollywood Tour The Hollywood tour begins, symbolically, at the corner of Hollywood and Vine (1). Here Keaton jumped onto a fire truck in The Cameraman. Proceed west down Hollywood Boulevard past Highland, to Mann’s (formerly Grauman’s) Chinese Theater. There, across the street between Highland and Orange, at 6904 Hollywood Blvd., is the former Mary Moll Building (2), which appeared briefly during the film-editing sequence from Sherlock Jr. Turn back east down Hollywood Blvd., and turn right (south) onto Cahuenga, stopping near the corner. The alley on the east side of Cahuenga (3) is the alley from Cops where Keaton grabs a passing car one- handed. Proceed south down Cahuenga a few yards until you reach the parking lot at 1622 Cahuenga (4), the lot where Brown Eyes was kept safe in Go West. This parking lot also appears in The Cameraman. Across the street from the parking lot (5) is the site of the former fire station that appears in Three Ages and The Cameraman.

Walker, ASC — stars Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford and was promoted as a re-teaming of the stars of the prior hit Gilda (1946). Considered a “comeback” effort following Hayworth’s difficult marriage to Prince Aly Khan, Trinidad was the star's first picture in four years and Columbia Pictures wanted one of their finest cinematographers to shoot it. Here, Walker (on right, wearing fedora) and his crew set a shot on Hayworth over Ford’s shoulder. Dick Tracy – W. Beatty (1990).jpg Directed by and starring Warren Beatty, Dick Tracy (1990) was a faithful ode to the timeless detective comic strip. To that end, Beatty and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC — seen here setting a shot during production — rendered the film almost entirely in reds, yellows and blues to replicate the look of the comic. Storaro earned an Oscar nomination for his efforts. The two filmmakers had previously collaborated on the period drama Reds and later on the political comedy Bullworth. Cries and Whispers - L. A vintage photo of the museum and Exposition Park. The cast and crew take a break filming the art museum scene in front of the Rose Garden in Exposition Park. Leila Hyams (seated , far left) appears in a fox hunting outfit, although she does not appear in the scene filmed here. She may have been dressed for a country club scene that was cut from the final film. To her right is Edward Earle, who plays Lionel Benmore. Director Ed Sedgwick is in the center. Between him and Buster is Ernie Orsetti, an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals who had returned from the World Series to work for Buster. Notice Norman MacNeil, the musician on the silent film set, with an accordion, behind Buster. 1 The hand placing the wedding ring in this shot is a hand double standing in for Buster. Buster lost the tip of his right index finger in a childhood accident, and his shortened finger is plainly visible in other shots. Buster used a hand double for a similar wedding ring shot in his earlier feature film Battling Butler. Hand doubles were often used to film insert shots in order to allow the stars to go home a bit early, but in this case it may have been an artistic decision. Lionel confronts Buster outside of the Hotel Carmel, located at 1451 Second Street in Santa Monica, on the corner of Broadway.
