Installation is Easy!

Open The Download .ZIP File Folder OR Extract the Template Files from

the ZIP Download File

Locate the compressed (zip) folder that you just downloaded. This contains the template and all associated files. Newer PCs and Macs will allow you to open and work out of the .ZIP file with- out extracting the contents. The .ZIP file will appear as a standard folder on your PC or Mac, containing the template and related files. On many older PCs, you must extract the contents of the .ZIP file folder to a location of your choice on your computer, such as the desktop. This will allow you to access the template files, documentation, links and other materials.

Install the Fonts

Inside the template folder, locate the “Fonts (INSTALL FIRST)” folder and open it. Install all of the included fonts (in TTF and OTF format) by clicking to opening each one individually, and clicking the install button. (Alternately, you may copy/paste or drag/drop the font files to your Windows Operating System PC’s “C:\Windows\Fonts” folder or to your OSX Operating System Macintosh’s “Font-”.)

Open the Template file

for your version of MS Word.

Open the folder containing the Word .DOCX template files. Open the file Labeled CS”“ for CreateSpace compatible covers. Open the file labeled “LS-IS” for Lightning Source or Ingram Spark compatible covers. Open the file labeled “Generic” to create a generic cover file that may be used at many boutique companies. Note: The Cover Templates require MS Word version 2007 or newer. Note: The template will contain sample text and content to help you get started. You may overwrite or remove this content as needed.

Cover Construction Basics for Print

Covers have Bleed Areas Covers are often printed on large sheets of thick paper stock and cut out by ma- chines. These cuts are made in a special “bleed” area. To assure that there is not a border of white paper on the edges of the book, the artwork for the cover of the book must extend into this bleed area. It is important that no text or “live ele- ments” of the book cover be placed in the bleed area because it may get cut out. Our cover templates have the bleed area highlighted in dark grey, so you can vis- ually see where the cuts will be made. The graphical templates included also have these bleed areas. Your cover artwork should completely cover the bleed areas, from edge to edge.

Alert: Allow an extra 0.25” of space away from the bleed and spine edges (trim and fold) for safety. Some printers may reject a cover with text that is closer than 0.25” to any bleed area. Just to be safe, keep a wide margin from the outside edges of the cover, and keep text as far from the bleed area as possible.

Cover Construction Basics for Print

There are Three Panes in the Template. The entire cover area of the template on the page is a table, consisting of three rows. Each row corresponds to the front, back, and spine area of the book, and operate independently. The front and back cover areas are preconfigured to have the correct width and height for your book cover, with bleed.

The spine area is preconfigured for the height dimension of your book, and is adjustable for the spine width. Adjusting the spine width using the process in this book will cause Word to automatically adjust the rest of the cover to con- form to the correct placement on the page. The spine width is the only meas- urement that should require adjustment.

The Text Elements “float” over the Background Graphics The included text areas are specially configured to “float” over the three back- ground images provided in the template. You may edit the text inside of these text boxes independently to change the font size, color, or typeface to your liking. Changes to the text will not interfere with the background images.

Tip: Use the Text Elements Provided with the Template Each text element has a special text effect applied to assure that they render cor- rectly on the PDF output you will provide to your printer. Adding a new text box that is not included with the template requires special care, as outlined in the back of this guide.

Setting the Spine Width and Text

9 @Copyright 2014 – BookDesignTemplates.com – All rights reserved.

The Spine

The Spine Width is based on the Page Count of the Book Interior The spine measurement for your cover must be precise. Each print vendor pro- vides tools, calculators, or formulas for calculating your precise spine width based on the number of pages for your book and the type of paper your select. Please use these tools to find the correct spine width for your book. Links for each vendor are in the back of this guide for your convenience. The Word template will accommodate accuracy of 1/100th of an inch. If you enter a spine width with higher degree of accuracy, the template will automatically round it to the nearest 1/100th.

Tip: Most printers calculate spine width by pages, not sheets In book printing, pages and sheets are two distinct terms. Since a page in a book is typically printed on both sides of the paper sheet, there are two book pages per sheet in the book interior. A 200 page book, will therefore print on 100 sheets. Most printers calculate the spine width based upon pages, instead of sheets, so be sure to use the right measurement metric when calculating spine width.

Changing the Spine Width

Make sure that you have the correct spine measurement for your book before you proceed.

Select the Spine Area by clicking on the top of the spine. Place your mouse over the top of the spine in the bleed area and click to highlight the spine table cell.

Select “Layout” from the “Table Tools” tab at the top of your screen.

Enter your spine width measurement in the “Width” field of the “Cell Size” area.

The spine will change to the new width entered, and the entire cover area will update with the new measurements for the overall width of the entire cover.

Tip: The Word template will accommodate accuracy of 1/100th of an inch. If you enter a spine width with higher degree of accuracy, the template will automatically round it to the nearest 1/100th.

Changing the Spine Width

Select the Spine Area Graphic by clicking on the top of the spine. Place your mouse over the top of the spine in the bleed area and click to highlight the spine graphic.

Select the center-right drag box, and drag the center spine graphic until it fits precisely between the two dotted lines of the spine cell.

Repeat this resize process with the Book Title, Author Name, and Publisher Logo. Click on each element to highlight it. Use the center-right drag boxes to resize the element to fit inside of the blue dotted lines of the spine cell.

Note: Most publishers can not print text or a publisher logo on a spine with less than 120 pages. If your book’s spine is too small for text, or you wish to omit the spine text and logo, simply highlight and delete the spine text and logo elements.

Changing the Spine Text

Change the Book Title. Place your mouse over the book title and click to activate the element. You may then type over or replace the text. You may change the font size, color and typeface as needed by using the font options on the home tab.

Change the Author Name. Place your mouse over the author name and click to activate the element. You may then type over or replace the text. You may change the font size, color and typeface as needed by using the font options on the home tab.

Alert: Printers require 0.2” of clearance, or more, on both sides of the spine text. Be sure your fonts are small enough to leave room between the text and the blue dotted line, like our sample.

Change the Publisher Logo. Right click on the publisher element to highlight it, and bring up the context menu. Choose “Change Picture” to select a new publisher logo. You may resize it as needed. We include a pre-sized publisher logo template for convenience.

Tip: Some fonts are not compatible with vertical alignment. They will work correct- ly on screen, but revert to a horizontal po- sition, or disappear, when the PDF is creat- ed. If this happens with your PDF, you will need to select a different font for the spine area. (Or use a graphic)

Changing Background Graphics & Art

14 @Copyright 2014 – BookDesignTemplates.com – All rights reserved.

About the Background Graphics

Each Background Element is a Separate Graphic We include three separate background element graphics that you can change with your own artwork. This allows you great flexibility in layout options:

Option A: You can use a single graphic that wraps across all three areas of the book’s cover, creating a single, full-wrap image.

Option B: You can convert an eBook cover to a print cover by deleting the front -cover text elements and replacing the front cover background element with your eBook cover. You may then change the spine and back cover graphics independently to match your eBook cover with a solid color or matching art.

Option C: You can change each background image independently to utilize different artwork for each area of the book cover. This approach works well if you have been provided separate cover artwork for each part of the cover that needs to be combined into a cohesive cover.

Background Template Images

We include pre-sized high-resolution graphic templates for all three panes of the book cover template. The front and back cover graphical templates are sized to exactly fit the front and back panes of the template, and include the needed bleed areas. The spine graphical template is sized vertically to fit your template, and comes pre-sized at the maxi- mum width that most printers allow (2.5” for most templates, 1.5” for 8.5x11” templates). You may trim the width of the spine graphic as needed to match the width of your actual spine.

Tip: We recommend using a high-quality photo and graphical editor like Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paintshop Pro, or similar to edit the graphic elements.

Tip: We recommend licensing high-quality and high-resolution images from a reputable company for use with your cover., like fotolia.

Background Template Images

We also include a pre-sized high-resolution graphic template to use as a starting point for cre- ating a full-wrap cover. The full-wrap cover graphical template is sized vertically to fit your tem- plate, and come pre-sized to include the maximum spine width possible (2.5” for most templates, 1.5” for 8.5x11” templates). You may trim the width of the graphic as needed to match the width of your actual book cover, in- cluding the spine. (Full Cover width is calculated as: Back Cover Width + Spine Width + Front Cover Width + Bleed)

Tip: We recommend using a high-quality photo and graphical editor like Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paintshop Pro, or similar to edit the graphic elements.

Creating a Full Wrap Background

The Full Wrap Graphic image should be sized large enough to cover the en- tire book cover. Once you resize the image, you may drag the image to re-center or move it to line up with your cover as you like. One caveat is that the image may completely obscure the live elements on the cover, making it difficultto see exact place- ment. However, you can repeat or undo the next step to readjust the image alignment. Make sure that graphic image does not extend past the of the book cover template’s table. Any excess may exceed the bleed requirements for the printer.

Changing the Front Cover Text

Change the Front Cover Text. Place your mouse over the book title, subtitle au- thor name, or quote box and click to activate the element. You may then type over or replace the text. You may change the font size, color and typeface as needed by using the font options on the home tab.

Rearrange the Front Cover Text. You may also rearrange the front cover text blocks as needed. Simply highlight the text box and drag it to a new location. Be sure to keep the text box within the blue dotted lines of the table column for the pane you are working in. Also avoid the dark grey bleed areas, as any text in this area is likely to be cut and discarded on the physical cover.

Tip: Use the Text Elements Provided with the Tem- plate Each text element has a special text effect applied to assure that they render correctly on the PDF output you will provide to your printer. Adding a new text box that is not included with the template requires special care, as outlined in the back of this guide.

Changing the Front Cover Font

Change the Front Cover Font Style and Color. Place your mouse over the book title, subtitle, author name, or quote box and highlight the text you wish to change.

Use the Font Control Panel to change the font size, typeface, color, justification or attributes. You can change the style of the font in the same manner as any Word document. Just highlight the text and make a selection from the menu Font menu on the Home tab.

Add Text Effects as Needed. You may also add text effects, like shadows, out- lines, beveled edges and more. Highlight the text you wish to change, and use the “Text Effects” drop down found on the Drawing Tools tab. NOTE: Some fonts require a text effect to render in PDF format properly. Often a simple shadow or out- line works best.

Tip: Some version of Word’s PDF creator may not correctly render every font. Always create a sample PDF by following the instructions in the “Getting Ready for Print” of this guide. If the font has an anomaly in the PDF form, you can try adding a shadow, emboss, or out- line effect to the text to see if that resolves the issue. When you add one of these effects, Word renders the text differently and the PDF may print correctly.

Save to PDF PDF files are the most common type required by print-on-demand services due to their stand- ardized formatting and small size. Though there are many ways to export a Word document to a PDF, one of the most effective is to utilize Word’s built in “Save As PDF” functionality.

Choose “Save As” from the “File” tab, or by clicking the “Office” button.

Choose PDF from the “Save as type” drop down box.

Choose the Correct PDF Option Settings (if available in your version of Word) Unlike our book interior templates, some printers, like CreateSpace, require you to uncheck “ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A)” in the PDF options list, to create a non-PDF/A format file. Other printers, like Lightning Source or Ingram Spark, require a PDF/A formatted file, and require that the “ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A)” option is checked.

Choosing the correct PDF format option for your printer will assure that the fonts and images embed property, and do not have “white box” borders or other anomalies.

The option to choose PDF/A or non-PDF/A formatting can be made by clicking the options button that appears in Word, when you choose “PDF” as the “Save as type” for the file.

Click “Save”

Note: Always open the PDF to verify that it saved correctly. Please follow your printer’s guidelines & specifications. Some versions of Word for Mac require you to create a custom page size that matches your template’s trim size to save or print to PDF correctly. We have a how-to in the FAQ section of this guide for your convenience.

Using Adobe Acrobat to Print a PDF Adobe Acrobat (XI or newer) is recommended to create the highest quality, highest resolution PDF documents for print. Adobe can be purchased from Adobe.com as a stand-alone product, or as part of the “Creative Cloud” package.

Choose “Adobe PDF” as your printer from the “File / Print” tab, or by pressing the “Print” button.

Choose “Press Quality” from the “Default Set- tings” drop down. Then choose “Edit”.

Check “Embed all fonts” in the Fonts menu op- tion. click OK. (or cancel if it is already checked.)

Select the actual page size in the Adobe PDF Page Size drop down. Add the correct size if it is not in the list of options.

Un-Check “Rely on system fonts”.

Click “OK” and then Print.

Note: MS Word’s PDF creation system has a limit of 220dpi. Though high-enough for razor sharp print for print-on-demand , some vendor’s automated print check tools, like CreateSpace, may flag the PDF file as low-resolution. These book files typically print with superb quality. However, to achieve the maximum output resolution, creating your PDF with Adobe Acrobat will produce the highest resolu- tion PDF files.

Q: Where can I find the spine width I need for my book? A: Each printer will have specific guidelines for formang the spine width, based upon the page count. You should always consult the publisher to make sure you have the most recent guidelines for calculang the spine width. Here are some links to a few spine width calculators for some popular vendors: CreateSpace: hps://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/CoverPDF.jsp Lightning Source: hps://www1.lightningsource.com/spinecalc.aspx

Q: What if my printer asks for a different sheet size or specification than the template is setup to generate? A: The templates are pre-configured to meet the prinng guidelines of several major prinng companies. However, specificaons may change over me, or you may wish to use a prinng company that has a different set of specificaons. The cover templates are fully adjustable, so you can change the size of the page sheet, the template table dimensions, or any other fea- ture in the template to suite your requirements for formang situaon. Please feel free to contact our support department to assist you with any issues. Q: Where can I get some high-resolution stock photography or artwork for use on my cover? Can’t I just download a picture from an internet image search? A: Images and photos found using internet search are often copyrighted and property of the person or company who took the photo or is offering it for sale. Use on your book cover may violate their rights. These photos and images are usually low resolution or poor quality too. Troubleshooting Q: Why after PDF conversion, is the text on my spine horizontal instead of vertical?

A: If you encounter spine text that has become horizontal, or has another anomaly like miss- ing leers, that means that the font used on the spine was not compable with Word’s ver- cal text funcon. To correct this issue, please choose a different font for the spine text.

Q: Why does my text have a white or black background?

A: There are 3 main causes of white or black background blocking on text: 1) An incompable font was ulized on the cover. Try changing to a different font. 2) There was no “text effect” applied to the font. You may apply a “text effect” to the font by highlighng the text, and then choose an effect from the Effects secon of the “Text Box Tools” tab in Word.

3) The PDF was created using the PDF/A specificaon opon in Word. To correct this, when saving the file as a PDF, open the opons dialog box by clicking the opons buon. Uncheck the “ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A)” opon. Then save to PDF.

Troubleshooting Q: Why does my printer warn me about low DPI or Low Resolution?

A: Word’s built in PDF engine has some limitaons on the DPI output, and will somemes ren- der porons of the PDF at a resoluon lower than 300 DPI. In our tesng, the print output of the cover files was razor sharp and free from blurring or resoluon issues. However, if your printer requires a higher DPI format file, we recommend creang the PDF using Genuine Adobe Acrobat Pro, using the Press-Quality sengs outlined in this guide.

Q: Why does the PDF print on multiple pages, or the wrong page size? A: Some operang systems, like OSX, oen require a custom page size be created that corre- sponds to the page size of the source document or file. Since the book cover is printed on a large format sheet, the custom page size may not be pre-configured on your system. Adding a custom page size is easy. For OSX / Macintosh: 1. Choose “Format” then choose “Document” in the toolbar. 2. Click the “Page Setup” buƩon. 3. Choose “Paper Size”, then “Manage Custom Sizes”. 4. Create a custom size for the page, using the guidelines below. The default page size for CS and the Generic templates is 19x13”. For most LS-IS templates the default size is 15x12”. Some LS-IS templates are larger. The LS-IS 8.5x11 template is 21x12” and the LS-IS 7x10” template is 19x12”.
