Newman The internet age has brought about the advent of major changes in the publishing world, including book and periodical publishing. “On demand” publishing has made it ostensibly easier for an author to self-publish, and individual authors can often market and sell their books in significant numbers through online retailers like Amazon. However, for the most widespread marketing and distribution of a book (particularly through retail book stores), it remains necessary to convince a major publisher to accept the manuscript. Like most other relationships between the artistic element on the one hand and the business/marketing element on the other, the book publishing contract negotiation usually amounts to a “David/Goliath” scenario. One will rarely find anything approaching equal bargaining strength between the two parties, and major publishers will frequently take a “take it or leave it” stance with authors. Of course, this problem is most pronounced with first-time authors. Established authors with a proven sales record, on the other hand, have a great deal more leverage in the process. In any event, attorneys for nascent writers should not obsequiously accept the form contracts offered by publishing houses. There are many provisions that can be added for the author‟s protection and benefit that publishers often will not resist. I. GENERAL PROVISIONS A. Parties. The obvious parties to the contract will be the publisher and the “author.” If the author wishes to use a pen name, this will need to be stated specifically at the outset of the document. -

The Scholarly Monograph's Descendants Clifford Lynch, Executive Director, Coalition for Networked Information Introduction This paper looks at the possible evolutionary paths that the current printed scholarly monograph may take, paying particular attention to the ways in which technical, economic, and cultural factors may shape this evolution. It does not predict the demise of today's printed scholarly monograph, but suggests that it will coexist with a series of successors that will offer new points of balance among technical and economic constraints and opportunities and that will provide authors with new ways in which to communicate their research. For some works and purposes, the new forms will be superior; in other cases, the traditional printed monograph will likely remain the preferred form. I begin with a brief examination of the current state of the scholarly journal in its transition to electronic formats–or at least to electronic distribution. This transition is arguably more advanced and taking place on a broader scale than is the evolution of the monograph, and thus it may offer insights into what we can expect for the monograph. At the same time, I will argue that much of the experience with the journal may be misleading when extrapolated directly to the future of the monograph. I have chosen words carefully: I believe that what is happening to the journal is best described as a transition or migration, while what we will see with the monograph is the evolution of digitally based successor genres that will coexist with the current print monograph. -

How to Read a Historical Monograph Like a Historian October 2018 gks & jr 1. Start with a BOOK REVIEW Professional historians do all the time. If you want to know a book well-for a discussion or for a research project-the book review is of course no substitute for reading the book. But a good book review will help you to understand the significance of the book you are going to read, its argument, its place in a broader conversation that has been going on. Book reviews have never been so easy to find and access. For a simple search, you might use JSTOR, a vast archive of scholarly journals. It contains the full text of journals running from their first year of publication up to a five years ago. To use JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org, accessible on campus), enter the title you'd like to search for, scroll down and check the box that says history journals, scroll down further and check the box that says reviews, then click on search. Other useful sources: Academic Search Premier, Historical Abstracts, American History and Life, H-Net Reviews. Of course, you have to read book reviews (as all else) with a critical eye. Reviewers, you will see, often disagree about the value of a book, an approach, or an argument. 2. Read the INTRODUCTION very carefully Ask yourself the following questions: * What historical problem is the author addressing? * Are there other interpretations (the work of other historians) that the author finds lacking? Why? * What evidence (what sources) is the author going to examine? * What questions is the author asking about the subject? * What are the answers to these questions? * What is the thesis of the book? All of these questions should be answered in the introduction. -

Permissions Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors. Online Submission Authors should submit their manuscripts online. OPEN • SET 2020 Design Binding Today OPEN • SET is a competition and exhibition, a triennial event featuring finely crafted design bindings. The title reflects the two categories in which the bookbinders compete—the Open Category, wherein the binder chooses which textblock to bind, and the Set Category, in which participants bind the same textblock. The Open Category titles are books in French, German, Spanish and English, a variety that echoes the number of foreign entries in the show. The Set Category book was conceived and printed by fine press printer Russell Maret; he selected the text of a letter by William Blake entitled Happy Abstract. There are notable highlights in this show, as there are First, Second and Third Prize awards in each category, as well as twenty Highly Commendable designations. These were awarded by a jury of the well-known American binders Monique Lallier, Mark Esser and Patricia Owen. Each juror has a binding on display. And there is so much more! Take note of the variety of structures and different materials used. When a binder first sits with a textblock, they spend time reading and absorbing the meaning of the content, examining the typography, the layout and page margins, taking note of the mood and color of the illustrations. Ideas form. A binding requires that the design come from deep within, and is then executed into visual play that exemplifies the interpretation. This is with all respect to the author, illustrator, and publisher. The result is an invitation into the text, the words and their meaning. The result is unique, a work of art in the form of a book. -

HOTCHKISS ALL-SCHOOL READ 2021: FAQS ABOUT BRAIDING SWEETGRASS 1. Do I need to read this entire book? It’s long! No. This year, we will all read a selection of shared essays from Braiding Sweetgrass. You will then choose one strand of essays for further reading from within the book, each corresponding to a natural space on the Hotchkiss campus: Field (Fairfield Farm), Woods (Beeslick Brook Woods), or Water (Lake Wononscopomuc). Please refer to the reading packet that was mailed out in the Family Update (also available here) for information on reading selections. 2. I am new to Hotchkiss. How should I pick a strand of essays, given that I don’t know the campus very well yet? If you are new to Hotchkiss and/or are not familiar with Fairfield Farm, Beeslick Woods, or Lake Wononscopomuc, have a look at the reading packet (see link above) and choose a place that intrigues you! You do not need to be familiar with that space in order to choose a strand for further reading. 3. I would prefer to read this as an ebook or listen to an audiobook. Is that okay? Braiding Sweetgrass is available in hardcover, paperback, audiobook, and ebook formats. You may read the book in any way you choose. 4. When should I complete my summer reading? You should complete the reading selections from Braiding Sweetgrass anytime before the start of the school year. We encourage you to get an early start so you can take your time enjoying this book as well as the book assigned to your grade level by the English department.
