Originally written in 1955 and now published for the first time in paperback, Wake Up is Kerouac?s retelling of the life of Prince Siddhartha Gotama, who as a young man abandoned his wealthy family and comfortable home for a lifelong search for enlightenment. Distilled from a wide variety of canonical scriptures, Wake Up serves as both a penetrating account of the Buddha?s life and a concise primer on the principal teachings of Buddhism. • Book of Sketches by Jack Kerouac Introduction by George Condo Penguin, 2006 $18
Book of Sketches by Jack Kerouac Introduction by George Condo Penguin, 2006 $18 Reviewed by Dave Moore After completing his scroll version of On the Road in April 1951, Kerouac was still unsatisfied and wanted to break away from its "conventional narrative survey of road trips etc." In October, his architect student friend Ed White sug- gested to him: "Why don't you just sketch in the streets like a painter but with words?" Kerouac tried it, and was gripped by the power of the new technique that lent a new form of spontaneity to his writing. He began straight away, enthusiasti- cally rewriting his Road book in this new fashion. The first 36 pages of Visions of Cody are pure sketches, recorded in the streets, subways and diners of New York in the fall of 1951. This new publication, Book of Sketches, contains over 400 more pages of sketches, typed by Kerouac in 1959 from the original small breast- pocket notebooks in which they were recorded. They begin with sketches of life at his sister's home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in August 1952, just after Kerouac had returned there from Mexico City where he had completed work on Doctor Sax. Kerouac describes his work on the North Carolina railroad just before taking off on the road once more on a mammoth hitch-hike to California, via Denver, and the new Cassady home in San Jose. Then follow sketches of Mexico from December 1952, and one on an airplane flying from St Louis to New York, a previously unknown trip taking Kerouac back home in time for Christmas.

A CENTURY OF FIGHTING TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN LOS ANGELES 1920-2020 BY MARTIN WACHS, PETER SEBASTIAN CHESNEY, AND YU HONG HWANG A Century of Fighting Traffic Congestion in Los Angeles 1920-2020 By Martin Wachs, Peter Sebastian Chesney, and Yu Hong Hwang September 2020 Preface “Understanding why traffic congestion matters is … not a matter of documenting real, observable conditions, but rather one of revealing shared cultural understandings.” Asha Weinstein1 The UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy was founded in 2017 through a generous gift from Meyer and Renee Luskin. It is focused on bringing historical knowledge to bear on today’s policy deliberations. Meyer Luskin stated that “The best way to choose the path to the future is to know the roads that brought us to the present.” This study is quite literally about roads that brought us to the present. The Los Angeles region is considering alternative forms of pricing roads in order to address its chronic congestion. This is a brief history of a century of effort to cope with traffic congestion, a perennial policy challenge in this region. The authors, like the Luskins, believe that the current public debate and ongoing technical studies should be informed by an understanding of the past. We do not duplicate technical or factual information about the current situation that is available elsewhere and under scrutiny by others. We also do not delve deeply into particular historical events or past policies. We hope this overview will be useful to lay people and policy practitioners participating in the public dialog about dynamic road pricing that will take place over the coming several years.

  • 2 P First Images
2 p First Images s manufacturing flourished in Pittsburgh, company identity and advertise- A ments became very important. The task of creating a pictorial vocabulary for industrial activity fell to the commercial printers of ads and billheads. The first industrial image of this study is a billhead of the Bakewell, Page, and Bakewell Glass Company (figure 1). Since Pittsburgh had no resident engravers, Benjamin Bakewell turned to Peter Maverick, who had a shop in New Jersey that produced trade cards, billheads, banknotes, and other commercial engravings.1 The signature, “p maverick sc” (Peter Maverick, sculp sit) appears below the image. Sometime before 1831, Bakewell added “Flint Glass” to the billhead. The Bakewell factory on this billhead projects the impressive size of the firm’s operations. Cursive script—the pride of the Maverick workshop—and Gothic type do not soften the image of the utilitarian, undecorated, three- story complex of buildings whose two conical chimneys spew dense smoke. When Benjamin Bakewell moved to Pittsburgh a year after the embargo of 1808 had ruined his exporting business in New York, he bought into a glass factory. Bakewell’s firm was the second glassworks in Pittsburgh and the city’s first manufacturer of flint glass.2 He sought a national market and profited from the restriction of imports during the War of 1812. By 1815, Bakewell, Page, and Bakewell was known nationally for the quality of its flint glass—clear, resonant lead glass. In 1816, Benjamin Bakewell headed a local committee advocating protective tariffs, especially for the local industries most vulnerable to foreign competition: iron, glass, wool, and cotton goods.3 A decade later, an illustrated advertisement in Samuel Jones’s Pittsburgh in the Year Eighteen Hundred and TwentySix combined pride in American manufacturing with a style from the past.

  • Guide to the Hoyt Family Papers
GUIDE TO THE HOYT FAMILY PAPERS Scope and Content Note The Hoyt Family Papers were gathered by the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association from numerous sources over many years, and number more than 1,500 items, dating from 1707 to 2006. In the early 20th century, Arthur T. Hoyt of Los Angeles donated manuscripts of Epaphras Hoyt, his great grandfather, and in 1977 the former Mrs. Clarence P. Hoyt donated numerous deeds and other Hoyt documents. Papers relating to David Starr Hoyt and his parents were purchased at auction in 2009, and in 2015 a collection of material relating to Epaphras Hoyt and his son, Arthur Hoyt, was purchased at auction. The collection represents eight generations of the family, descended from Nicholas Hoyt of Windsor, Connecticut, through his son David. The superscript numbers accompanying names in the notes below refer to the numbers assigned by George Sheldon in genealogical notes on the Hoyt family in the second volume of his History of Deerfield (1895). Many of the following biographical notes are from the same source. Biographical Notes and Description of Series David Hoyt2, son of Nicholas1, was born in 1651. He was a freeman at Hatfield, Mass., in 1678 and removed to Deerfield on the permanent settlement (1680). His first wife was Mary Wells of Hatfield; she died before September 1676. His second wife, Sarah Wilson, whom he married in 1678, died about 1689. He then married, about 1691, Abigail Cook Pomeroy. David was captured in the raid of 1704 and died of starvation at Coos, New Hampshire, in May of that year.

  • Mexicans: Recontextualizing Fellaheen Identities in Jack Kerouac’S on the Road
“BIG EMPTY NEGROES” AND “gaY, EXCITIng” MEXICANS: RECONTEXTUALIZING FELLAHEEN IDENTITIES IN JACK KEROUAC’S ON THE ROAD EFTYCHIA MIKELLI Durham University, UK [email protected] 53 Introduction Upon its first publication in 1957, On the Road marked Jack Kerouac’s rise to fame, and the novel continues to bear significant aesthetic and cultural resonances today. The story is narrated by Sal Paradise, who, often together with Dean Moriarty, embarks on a series of road trips (five major ones, corresponding to the five parts of the novel) and encounters a multitude of adventures along the way. The legend around On the Road has it that the novel was written in three weeks, specifically “between April 2 and April 22 [1951]” (D. Brinkley 2004: xxiii).1 However, it is in fact the outcome of experiences that had been building up for years. The fact that Kerouac shifted through various narrators and a host of characters and titles before deciding upon which he would use in the text published in 1957 is indicative of his numerous experimentations with narrative technique.2 The multiple changes in character names and draft titles are suggestive of the fluidity of the process of composition. The distinct typescripts of On the Road reflect different stages in Kerouac’s compositional technique. Gewirtz argues that “the typescript copy of the scroll, which Kerouac executed so that he would have a readable text to send the publishers, may no longer be extant […] However, Kerouac prepared at least two other typescripts based on the scroll miscelánea: a journal of english and american studies 44 (2011): pp.
