SSROC ORDINARY MEETING 20 MARCH 2014 6 Minutes of the Ordinary Meeting of the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) held at Burwood Council on Thursday 21 November 2013 9. EXTERNALLY FUNDED PROJECTS 9.1 Regional Waste Strategy Mr Northey advised the meeting: • SSROC was seeking three funding packages for Regional Coordinator positions (two packages had already been approved) and stated that advice had now been received that a third package for a Regional Coordinator had been approved by the EPA. • Over the next 3.5 years SSROC will receive $1.8m in grants from the State Government to develop a Regional Waste Strategy and to develop projects in line with the EPA’s Waste Less, Recyle More initiatives focusing on dry recycling, targeting organics, decreasing waste to landfill etc and combating illegal dumping and associated issues. • Recruitment for the three Regional Coordinators is about to commence. The Coordinators will be based in the SSROC office but will be working closely with staff in each of the Councils. • He also asked for an endorsement for SSROC to continue with the project, accept the grants and also to endorse Hyder Consulting who have been our consultants throughout this process. Hyder Consulting will provide strategic advice to us over the next three years. Councillor Betts (Waverley) asked whether it was proposed to have steering a Committee and wished to nominate Waverley. Mr Northey advised that this was largely organised but would take Councillor Betts’ offer on board. Councillor Tsirekas (Canada Bay) queried if the consultants fees are within the range where a decision can be made by SSROC or whether there would be a need to go to tender. Mr Northey advised that it was not necessary to go to tender. Hyder went through an EOI process a couple of years ago to assist SSROC with this project and other projects so they know the background, know the work that is being done, and know SSROC operations and Councils well.
