    1 Sexuality and ‘Sexual Largess’ Themes, Lyrics and Images in Nigerian Hip- Hop Music Videos: A Content Analysis By Jemisenia John Oluwaseyi 08032070010 [email protected] & Ezenagu Nnedinma Roseline 08054805605 [email protected] Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Nigeria Nsukka Abstract Sexual contents in the media have received great attention from scholars and researchers since the 1980s till present, regrettably very little has been done in this area of research in Nigeria, where increasing controversies have continued to trail the contents of videos that are shown on such terrestrial channels as Channel ‘O’, Hip-TV, Soundcity, Mtv base, and BET. Issues surrounding the rate of sexuality, sex, sexism, objectification, materialism, and the ‘good life’ (as it is shown on these music channels) have come under intense scrutiny by observers, commentators, scholars and the general public. Consequently, this study analyzed themes, lyrics and images bordering on sexuality and sexual largess in Nigerian Hip-Hop music videos on two popular stations on the terrestrial channels: Soundcity and Hip.Tv music channels between the periods of April to June, 2015. Through a multi-stage sampling technique, 132 videos were selected for analysis. Two independent coders were trained. The Cohen’s kappa (k) symmetric measure of agreement was employed in order to ensure the reliability of items. The Cohen’s kappa (k) for this study was 0.792. Altogether, result revealed that sexual themes, lyrics and images that are derogatory to womanhood are predominant in the analyzed music videos. The study recommends among others, enlightenment on the part of musicians/artistes on the need to promote messages of gender equality.

They suffer frequent beatings, unfair arrests, police raids and seizures both in the provinces and in Abuja. But, paradoxically, the 36 states and its federal district are also a boom area for scores of privately-owned newspapers, radio and television stations, which take delight in revealing the immorality of a corrupt and capricious political class. Every political dispensation is expected to provide good and quality education in any state or country. However, it appears that this is not to be, especially in most African countries. Leaders who should focus on quality education of the masses seemed to attach little or no importance to education and this could have great consequences for administration of tertiary institutions. The number of times these institutions were closed down seemed to spell doom for the tertiary and university education sector. It is on the basis of this that this study examined how university administration fared during various political dispensations in Nigeria at any point in time. The study found out that politics had not impacted much on administration of universities in Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that the administration of universities or tertiary institutions should be given the adequate attention and support that they deserve from government at all times. It was also recommended that heads of universities and tertiary institutions should be neutral and stay clear of partisan politics before and during their appointments.

It examines the meaning, actors, procedures and practices of power-sharing in Nigeria. The paper assesses the opportunities and challenges arising from the use of power-sharing as a method of governing the public sphere and highlights the lessons that Nigeria’s experience presents to other African countries struggling with the challenge of ethnic diversity. The paper argues that power-sharing as it is being practiced in Nigeria widens the asymmetrical and oligarchic power of the dominant elite groups, creates a dependency syndrome, and hampers the growth of democracy. It contends that the Nigerian case exposes the contradictions and limitations of power-sharing as an institutional approach to the regulation of the public sphere. Introduction Nigeria’s heritage of ethnic diversity has had an overwhelming impact on the country’s public sphere, leading to its “ethnicization”. On the other hand, the stiff political competition among the elite has resulted in the “politicization” of ethnicity in the country. The result of the above is a highly contested public sphere, which has been made the arena of rhetorical confrontations between various ethnic groups in the country. However since the 1970s, the Nigerian political elite have adopted power-sharing as a strategy to manage inter-group relations, mitigate the negative effects of ethnic politics, and transform the “ethnicized” public sphere through the introduction of the discourse of “unity in diversity”.

Ojo Introduction This paper is an attempt to consider the role of the military in Nigeria’s democratic transitions. The paper has one major thrust – an in-depth analysis of military role in democratic transitions in Nigeria - the fundamental question, however, is: can the military ever be expected or assumed to play any major role in building democracy? The reality on the ground in Africa is that the military as an institution has never been completely immune from politics and the role of nation-building. However, whether they have been doing that perfectly or not is another question entirely which this paper shall address. The extant literature on civil-military relations generally is far from being optimistic that the military can discharge that kind of function creditably. Nonetheless, perhaps by sheer providence, they have been prominent both in political transitions and nation-building in Africa. It is against this backdrop of both pessimism and optimism that necessitated this caption an ‘oxymoron’- a figure of speech which depicts the contradictory compatibility in terms of civil-military relations in Nigeria. It is important to note that Nigeria’s democratization march has been a chequered one.
