MARA, M.D. Senior Adviser and Team-leader, WHO Malaria-Control Demonstration Team, Suleimaniya, Iraq formerly, Senior Adviser and Team-leader, WHO Malaria-Control Demonstration Team, South Malabar Manuscript received in January 1954 SYNOPSIS The author describes the activities and achievements of a two- year malaria-control demonstration-organized by WHO, UNICEF, the Indian Government, and the Government of Madras State- in South Malabar. Widespread insecticidal work, using a dosage of 200 mg of DDT per square foot (2.2 g per m2), protected 52,500 people in 1950, and 115,500 in 1951, at a cost of about Rs 0/13/0 (US$0.16) per capita. The final results showed a considerable decrease in the size of the endemic areas; in the spleen- and parasite-rates of children; and in the number of malaria cases detected by the team or treated in local hospitals and dispensaries. During December 1949 a malaria-control project, undertaken jointly by WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Govern- ment of India, and the Government of Madras State, started operations in the malarious areas among the foothills and tracts of Ernad and Walavanad taluks in South Malabar. During 1951 the operational area was extended to include almost all the malarious parts of Ernad and Walavanad as well as the northernmost part of Palghat taluk (see map 1 a). The staff of the international team provided by WHO consisted of a senior adviser and team-leader and a public-health nurse.

The beaches perform, in this context, a fundamental role, where the issues related to planning and management are increasingly more important when it comes to an implementation of a sustainable development philosophy. In Kerala, where coastal tourism plays a major part of the state’s economy, the management of beaches is crucial for maintaining their quality and therefore continuing to attract tourists. Since the 1990s, with the application of Coastal Zone Management Plans to the whole Kerala coast, beach plans are now required. The concept of capacity has received considerable attention as a result of increasing anthropogenic pressure in certain natural environments.     Issues pertaining to Peninsular Rivers wing i. Interstate matters: (a) Mullaperiyar Dam Issue 1. On 29‐10‐1886, a lease indenture for 999 years was made between Maharaja of Travancore and Secretary of State for India for Periyar irrigation works. By another agreement in 1970, Tamil Nadu was permitted to generate power also. The Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed during 1887‐1895. Its full reservoir level is 152 ft and it provides water through a tunnel to Vaigai basin in Tamil Nadu for irrigation benefits in 68558 ha area. 2. In 1979, reports appeared in Kerala Press about damage to Periyar Dam. On 25th November, 1979 Chairman, CWC held meeting with the officers of Irrigation and Electricity, Deptt. of Kerala and PWD of Tamil Nadu and some emergency medium term measures and long‐term measures for strengthening of Periyar Dam were decided. A second meeting under the Chairmanship of Chairman, CWC was held on 29th April 1980 and it was opined that after the completion of emergency and medium term measures, the water level in the reservoir can be raised up to 145 ft. 3. The matter became sub‐judice with several petitions. On the directions of the Supreme Court in its order dated 28.4.2000, Minister (WR) convened the Inter‐State meeting on 19.5.2000 and as decided in the meeting, an Expert Committee under Member (D&R), CWC with representatives from both States was constituted in June 2000 to study the safety of the dam. The Committee in its report of March, 2001 opined that with the strengthening measures implemented, the water level can be raised from 136 ft.

Water are comprises of coastal water bodies and fresh water bodies (lakes, river and groundwater). Since the past few decades, the increasing of anthropogenic activities especially in industrial area has effects to water bodies. This is the global issues which happening throughout the world and Kerala also face these problems. This study attempts to show the spatial distribution of sediment chemical parameters in the Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam and study the change during several past years. It also shows the partitioning of heavy metals in lake water. The Ashtamudi Lake is the second largest wetland ecosystem in Kerala. The lake is polluted by nearby factories, oil mills, boats, septic wastes etc. Sediment play an important role in elemental cycling in the aquatic environment and can be a sensitive indicator for monitoring contaminants in aquatic environment. GIS and remote sensing techniques can be used to make effective maps showing the effective spatial distribution of each parameters. Also sediment samples from various sample locations of Ashtamudi Lake will be collected and testing will be done accordingly.
