  • Like a Wrecking Ball: Gillian Welch and the Modern South
LIKE A WRECKING BALL: GILLIAN WELCH AND THE MODERN SOUTH Jason Kirby A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Dr. Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Dr. Bill Albertini ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis explores the work of “alternative country” music performer Gillian Welch in the context of modern-day Southeastern American regional identity. Gillian Welch, along with her accompanist and songwriting partner David Rawlings, has been known since the mid-1990s for making spare acoustic music which incorporates elements of early country and string-band music, bluegrass, gospel, rock, punk, and folk music. Her songs’ lyrics obliquely address themes of change and continuity central to the Southern roots music she draws upon. Welch has been celebrated as an innovator in the “alt.country” scene, but her detractors have labeled her as inauthentic, due to her status as a woman raised in privilege in California performing music most commonly associated with Southern working-class people. The authenticity debate surrounding Welch is particularly relevant considering the shifting boundaries of Southern regional identity following latter 20th century industrialization and re-migration to the area. Having first established the social and historical context to the debate, in this thesis I argue that Gillian Welch’s music opens up traditionally limited definitions of what it means to be Southern in modern America. Welch’s work proves that it is possible to use the region’s past as a tool to understand its present situation, without sinking into a sort of white nostalgia.

In their dichotomous moral view, good music reveals God’s nature, allowing born-again listeners to draw closer to God and witness their salvation to unbelievers, and bad music pulls listeners away from God by promoting immorality and false worship. Fundamentalists also prioritize mental engagement with music over emotional and physical responses to it because they believe that people more directly relate to God through their conscious minds and only indirectly with their bodies, as when fundamentalist musicians make music with their bodies, an activity that they believe glorifies God.

  • The Aesthetics of Country Music John Dyck to Appear in Philosophy Compass—Please Cite Published Version
The Aesthetics of Country Music John Dyck To appear in Philosophy Compass—please cite published version. Abstract. Country music hasn’t gotten much attention in philosophy. I introduce two philosophical issues that country music presents. First, country music is simple. Some people might think that this simplicity makes country aesthetically deficient; I argue that simplicity can be aesthetically valuable. The second issue is country’s ideal of authenticity; fans and performers think that country should be ‘real’. But country music scholars have debunked this ideal of authenticity; widespread ideas about country authenticity are rooted in a racist and fabricated picture of country music. In discussing these two issues, I highlight the importance of community in country music. Philosophers have not had much to say about country music. But it is a good time to take up country music. Traditionally focused on high art, philosophers have more recently started to pay attention to low-brow artforms like punk, heavy metal, and street art (Gracyk 2016, Prinz 2014, Riggle 2010, Wiltshire 2016a 2016b). Why has country evaded philosophical attention? First: Philosophers are often drawn to art that is subtle and complex (though see Carroll 1998, Cohen 1993, Gracyk 1996)—or at least edgy, like punk and heavy metal. In general, country music doesn’t tend to be complex or edgy. It tends to be low class and simple (Ching 2003). Think of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Second: Some might argue that country music doesn’t engage our aesthetic faculties. Philosophers have claimed that aesthetic attention requires that we divorce it from practical concerns (Levinson 2012).

The United States has the world's largest music industry and its music is heard around the world. Since theWWW.BSSVE.IN beginning of the 20th century, some forms of American popular music have gained a near global audience. Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of the United States and played its first music. Beginning in the 17th century, immigrants from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Germany and France began arriving in large numbers, bringing with them new styles and instruments. African slaves brought musical traditions, and each subsequent wave of immigrants contributed to a melting pot. Much of modern popular music can trace its roots to the emergence in the late 19th century of African American blues and the growth of gospel music in the 1920s. The African American basis for popular music used elements derived from European and indigenous musics.
