Rendsburg In January 2018, the Library of Congress announced that it had obtained a c. 1,000-year-old Torah scroll sheet. What makes this Torah scroll sheet so important? Where is it from? And how did it reach the halls of the de facto national library of the United States? Here is the story, though fi rst some background. As readers of BAR know, in ancient Israel and during the Greco- Roman period, biblical books were written on scrolls, made either from papyrus (in the earlier period) or from parchment (in the later period). Our most important testimony, of course, stems from the more than 200 biblical manuscripts found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, dated from the third through fi rst centuries B.C.E. In the scroll format, the text was written on only one side of the available writing surface, what we may call the inside surface. With the rise of Christianity, the written text took a new form, the codex, the forerunner of the modern book. In this format, the text was written on both sides of the parchment sheet, and then the sheets were piled one on top of the other and sewn together—again, consider the modern book. The most famous exemplar is probably Codex Sinaiticus,* a complete (or nearly so) manuscript of the Greek Bible (including both * See “Who Owns the Codex Sinaiticus?” BAR, November/December 2007. -

The five-day event with 140 galleries played host to an esti- mated 50,000 visitors in the 180,000-square-foot facility. Located in the sprawling Convention Center’s South Hall, the show provided a combination of historic, modern, and contemporary art forms, in- cluding sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and photography. The featured photography ex- hibition was created by Gil Garcetti, LA District Attorney from 1992 to 2000 and father of Los An- geles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Receiving considerable attention and space, about 50 images in both color and black-and-white were presented from Garcet- ti’s 2010 book, Paris: Women & Bicycles, a proj- ect he developed and applied as a platform to push for bike-share programs in Los Angeles County. For four years the now 72-year-old Garcetti travelled back and forth to France to shoot Parisian women pedaling about the city. VICTO RIAN GIANTS THE BIRTH OF ART PHOTOGRAPHY Large-Print Label Booklet Please return after use The idea of ‘art photography’ is as old as photography itself, but it was not until the 1850s that the idea began to take hold. Then, the slow and cumbersome Daguerreotype and paper negative processes, both invented around 1839, gave way to a new technology, wet-plate collodion. This enabled photographers to make negatives on glass for the first time. Faster, sharper and more versatile, the new method unleashed a torrent of creativity. It was into this electrifying atmosphere that four photographers would help reinvent photography. While they never formed an official group or association, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, Lady Clementina Hawarden and Oscar Rejlander had intersecting careers. They exchanged, debated, and experimented with new ways of making photographs, testing the new medium to its limits. As this exhibition reveals, the four artists knew and photographed many of the same people and explored similar themes. Both Carroll and Cameron consulted Rejlander, and they all maintained lasting connections based on shared approaches to portraiture and narrative. Bridging the art of the past and the art of the future, they became true giants of Victorian photography. All photographs are vintage albumen prints from wet-plate collodion negatives unless otherwise described. As Patron of the National Portrait Gallery, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer, I am delighted to support Victorian Giants. This captivating exhibition and the accompanying book bring together works by Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, Oscar Rejlander and Clementina Hawarden for the first time, to explore the birth of art photography in England.
