1 Descendants of Adam De Carey Foreword

The Carey family name has been spelled several different ways over time. This includes: de Kari, de Cari, Cari, Carei, Carye, Cary and Carey. The lineage presented within this document uses the modern spelling of Carey.

Credits for the information presented regarding the ancient Carey line goes to the folks at www.tudorplace.com.ar and H.S. Cary author of "The Cary Family of England." More recently, the members of the Carey family who share an interest - especially Franklin Ross.

Genealogy research is at best a soft science. It is an effort to compile family anecdotal stories, census records, wills, obituaries, deeds and just about any piece of information available. There often sight variations in the various “official” records. In general speculation is documented as such.

There is also considerable questions asked of family members who with patience have help fill in many of the blanks. Thank you!

Notes for ADAM DE CAREY: Adam married Ann, daughter of Sir William Trevett. Adam de Kari was Lord of the Castle Kari located in Somersetshire about 12 miles southeast of Wells. From here river Cari rises and flows into the Bristol Channel. It is possible the name CAREY came from the river Cari.

Notes for JOHN CAREY: On 5 November 1387 Sir John Cary was appointed by King Richard II as Chief Baron

24 Descendants of Adam De Carey of the Exchequer and later advanced to a Judge of the Land. Sir John was very honest, faithful, and loyal to his king even though King Richard ll was put to death by Henry IV. As a result of loyalty to Richard II, Sir John was banished to Ireland where he remained for four years. His lands and goods were confiscated. Among his estates were Cockington and Clovelly. They lived during reigns of Edward III and Richard II.

For this, Henry V restored to him most of his father's (Sir John) lands and authorized him to bear arms-of a Knight of Arragon. They lived during reigns of Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V.

Notes for SIR WILLIAM CARY: He was known as the Knight of Cockington. During the War of the Roses he took an active part on the side of the House of Lancaster which was defeated. Sir William was beheaded and his property confiscated.

King Henry VII later restored the property to Sir William's son, Robert. Sir William had another son, Thomas by his second wife.

Notes for THOMAS CAREY: Although not a direct lineage ancestor, his son and grandson have an interesting story - thus their inclusion.

Thomas from the Baron Hundson line. From Thomas sprang three noble lines. Thomas married Margaret Spencer. They had two sons; (1) John, Knight, born 1495 and was the ancestor of the Falkland Line. (2) William born 1500 was the ancestor of the Baron Hundson and Monmouth lines. William was Knight of Cockington and married Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne Boleyn. William's son, Sir Henry Cary, born in about 1525 was Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth and her first cousin.

Notes for HENRY CAREY: Said to be son of Henry VIII by Mary Boleyn, officially son of Sir William Carey. The King granted the Carey's actual manors and estates during the affair and immediately before the child's birth. BEF, the Careys had been granted rather minor offices. (You may recall that Henry publicly acknowledged another illegitimate son, born in 1519. This boy was called Henry Fitzroy - the surname traditionally given to royal bastards - and was ennobled, given the title Duke of Richmond. If Henry Carey was also his son, why didn't Henry do the same for him? The answer lies in his determination to divorce Catalina de Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, the child's aunt. It is likely that even Henry VIII would have been too embarrassed to recognize his bastard son by his fiancee's sister.)

His father, William Carey died on 23 Jun 1528 and Henry VIII promptly granted Anne Boleyn the wardship of her nephew (and possibly his son), two-year-old Henry Carey. In another letter to Anne, Henry remarked upon Mary's easy virtue. He and Anne were concerned that, after William's death, Mary's behavior would degenerate; in other

words, she would be an embarrassment to the King and his intended wife.

In 1534, Mary Boleyn secretly married William Stafford. This marriage was a disaster for her, excepting her personal happienss. Meanwhile, her son was still living with his aunt, Queen Anne. He was being tutored by the great French poet, Nicholas Bourbon, clearly benefitting from the wardship. His mother's life between 1534 and her sister's execution in 1536 is difficult to trace. She seems to have resided at Rochford, Essex from the time of her disgrace to her death on 19 Jul 1543.

In 1559, on the accession of Elizabeth to the throne, Henry Carey was ennobled as Baron Hunsdon, with lands in Hertfordshire, Kent, and Hampshire, and becomes Elizabeth's Captain of the Gentlemen Pensioners, the Queen's personal bodyguard. Henry eventually gains the office of Lord Chamberlain as well.

In 1561 he was appointed a Knight of the Garter, which was founded in 1348 by Edward III, the Garter was England's highest and most coveted order of chivalry, having been revived in imitation of the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece by both Edward IV, who had built St. George's Chapel at Windsor, and Henry VII. Henry VIII, with his passion for ancient chivalric values and his policy of accentuating his own magnificence, would continue this tradition.

In 1569 (Nov) during the Revolt of the Northern Earls, with help from dissidents in Scotland, Hunsdon is named lieutenant-general of the Queen's forces in the north. The rebellion is crushed in northern England first (Feb 1570), then remaining rebels are hunted down on the Scots' side of the border with Scottish help.

He died in Jul 1596, and his son George becomes the second Baron Hunsdon and assumes some of his father's offices, but not as Lord Chamberlain yet (George's youngest brother Robert, a favorite of the Queen and later James I, becomes governor of Berwick).

Notes for THOMAS CAREY: He known as the "Maryland Immigrant." Thomas came first to Accomac, Virginia around November 14, 1653. There is some speculation that he was granted 1000 acres by Lord Baltimore in 1657 on Wye River, Talbot Co.

Thomas, his second wife Jane, their children Edward, Thomas and John, as well as his servant Alexander Ferrill moved into Monie, Maryland, in Somerset Co., MD near Princess Anne, around August 22,1666 soon after the county was established. He had surveyed 300 acres of land on the north side of Great Moyne Creek in Somerset Co. on November 20, 1666. The track of land was called Cary's adventure. He later bought 150 acres of adjoining land called Washford, referred to as Waterford in his will.

Thomas made his will 1681, and it was probated 1686 in MD.

Notes for JOHN QUINCY CAREY: Harriet and John had 13 children, 11 of them lived. The family lived in many places, the Coulbourne District, Stockton, New Church, VA, Pocomoke Area, Welbourne 8th Election District in 1900, Ironshire.

Harriet died near Pocomoke on February 14,1904 age 65 years 3 months and 13 days of bronchial pneumonia. She is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Whiton, Maryland and the epitaph on her tombstone reads; "Precious one she has left us, Left us yes, forever more. But we hope to meet our loved ones on that bright and happy shore. Lonely the house and sad the hour since our dear one has gone. But, oh, a brighter hour than ours, In heaven is now her own."

John Quincy remarried to Mary Jane Bradford on March 15, 1905 in Pocomoke City, Maryland.

Mary Jane Bradford was born April 1852 and was 48 in the 1900 Census. She was a widow with 3 children and lived around Snow Hill, Maryland. She lived with her brother in law Peter Bradford born March 1877 age 23 in 19OO Census and was a barber. She had a son named James who was a barber in Snow Hill. Jane died in Snow Hill Maryland on March 27, 19O6 of heart failure. Burial is in Snow Hill.

John Quincy and Jane Bradford lived for awhile on a farm in front of the Remsen Church, Big Mill Road below Stockton Maryland. Bertie Carey remembered Mahalia visiting her brother John Quincy there around 1906. The house burned while they lived there and they moved to Snow Hill, Maryland where Jane died and it is believed she is buried in Snow Hill next to her son.

After Jane's death John Quincy went to live with his son Clayton near Ironshire. He grew a long white beard and had long finger nails and chewed tobacco all the time. He died February 18, 1917 of Carcinoma (Cancer) of the lower jaw at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 9 days and is buried next to Harriet in Mount Zion Cemetery. The undertaker was John W. Burbage & Bother of Berlin, Maryland. The death certificate was signed by Dr. Charles R. Law of Berlin, Maryland and the Pastor was Joe Lynch of Powellville. Funeral cost $55.OO and each of the 5 living sons paid $9.17 each and Arthur Jackson, husband of Ida paid the other $9.17. The trip to Whiton is around 2O miles and John Quincy's last ride was made in a horse drawn

John Quincy was a big man with big hands and did a lot of wrestling, either as a sport or for money and at times he could be pretty mean and rough, so the story is told. Most of his life was spent farming and he was well known in Worcester County.

Harriet had a sister named Mary (Maggie) A. Timmons, married name unknown. She lived below Stockton on the Seymour Lane Farm about one half mile from Big Mill on the Virginia Road. Two of her children are buried there along with another grave which could have been her husband, there are no tombstones.

Notes for DURAND DEWEY CAREY: Both a gambler and an artist, one of the family stories cites the instance he painted a cow on the barn so his wife wouldn't know he took it to be sold. She didn't suspect anything for a few days until she noticed there was turpentine in the milk. Obviously a skilled artist! Durand was a farmer.

Durand died in the state hospital in Cambridge, MD of Metastasis and Senile Psychosis. He is buried in Whaleysville, MD. There is no tombstone.

Preston James ("Jim") Carey

He was born on 5/25/30 and died on 1/11/05 at home with his family after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jim is survived by his daughter Tami Oltman, son-in-law Murray Oltman, daughter-in- law Eva Carey, and three grandsons Jason Carey, Zachary Oltman and Nathan Oltman, as well as, his brother Dale Carey. He is also survived by many members of his family including: Myrna & Ronnie Dyson, Bill Carey, Jr., Leisa & Perry Jones; his in-laws Jeanette Grise, Eva Baker, Leah Dorey, and Donald & Diane Williams, and Rae Williams; as well as, many, many loved nieces, nephews.

Jim was son of Preston and Jennie Carey, both deceased. He is preceded in death by: his son, Gregory Dean Carey who died in 1998; and the love of his life - his wife of over 54 years, Betty Carey, who preceded him last summer; and his brother Bill Carey, Sr.

He was born and raised in Berlin, MD and was a 1947 graduate of Buckingham H.S. in Berlin, MD In 1948, Jim joined the Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Bairoko (CVE 115) and entered Naval Reserve after his initial tour of duty. Jim returned to Berlin and married Betty Jean Williams on January 13, 1950.

In 1952, during the Korean War, Jim returned to active duty and served upon the Amphibious Force Flagship U.S.S. Taconic (AGC-17). He received National Defense and Navy Service Occupation medals. After an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1953, he again returned to Berlin.

Jim joined the Maryland State Police in 1958, served for 22 years and retired a Sergeant in 1980. While a State Policemen, he operated amphibious rescue vehicles, was on the K-9 Corp with "Rebel" and worked in the Easton, Salisbury and Berlin Barracks. He received a Superintendents Commendation and Governor's Citation.

In 1976 Jim joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, served in Maryland and Florida units and was called up again for active duty during Desert Storm where he worked the Port of Charleston. Jim was a Chief Petty Officer when he retired from the Coast Guard Reserve in 1992.

Jim and Betty owned Pine Rest Cottages in West Ocean City, MD and then lived in Berlin, MD for 10 years before moving to Pine Island, FL. Jim and Betty lived in Pine Island for 22 years before relocating back to the Fenwick, DE area in 2001.

Jim was a member of the: Berlin Volunteer Fire Department; American Legion Post 123, Berlin, MD; American Legion Post 136; Pine Island, FL; VFW Post 7234; Ocean View, DE; Elks Lodge 2781, Pine Island, FL; Moose Lodge 2542, Sussex Co., DE; Moose Lodge 1843, Pine Island, FL; USCG Chief Petty Officers Association; and the MD State Police Alumni Association

Jim loved his wife, his grandsons and his family; crossword puzzles, household carpentry projects (he was an avid handyman), cooking, boating, crabbing, fishing, eating seafood; and enjoyed the company of his many good friends. She and Jim owned Pine Rest Cottages in West Ocean City, MD and then lived in Berlin, MD for 10 years before moving to Pine Island, FL.. Betty & Jim lived in Pine Island for 22 years before relocating back to the Fenwick, DE area in 2001.

Betty was a past member of the Berlin Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary as well as a past member of the Berlin Boggs-Dishroom American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She is a current member of the Pine Island, FL American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 136 and the Ocean View, DE VFW Post 7234.

Betty loved her family and friends; enjoyed reading; playing cards; crossword puzzles; bingo; cooking; and, bowling in the Foxy Ladies bowling league.
