Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, solo home run from Max Murphy. The RailCats then scored 13 unanswered runs, beginning with a three-run bottom of the first. Thomas Walraven tied the game with a sacrifice fly, while Alec Olund and Raymond Jones had two- out, RBI hits. The RailCats scored seven two-out runs in the second, beginning with an RBI double from Michael Woodworth. Walraven hit an RBI single and was followed by a two-run triple from Olund. Jones hit an RBI single, and Jackson Smith capped the inning with a two-run double. Gary SouthShore made it 12-1 in the fourth on a two-out, RBI double from Jones and a bases loaded hit by pitch to Brandon Zaragoza. Woodworth hit a two- out, RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. The Goldeyes scored three runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run double from Sonny Ulliana and an RBI groundout from Tyler Hill. Jose Vasquez started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing 10 runs, four earned, on 10 hits in 2.0 innings. Vasquez walked one and struck out none. Deon Stafford had two hits and has hit safely in 10 games in a row. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE RAILCATS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 112-90 all-time against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, including a 53-43 record in road games, and a 49-42 record at US Steel Yard. The RailCats joined the Northern League as an expansion team in 2002, and played all of their games on the road. The following year, the RailCats moved into their current home, US Steel Yard. Greg Tagert is in his 16 th season and 17th overall year as RailCats’ manager. Tagert guided the RailCats to the Northern League Championship Series five consecutive seasons from 2005-09, including Northern League titles in 2005 and 2007. The RailCats joined the American Association in 2011 along with the Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, and Kansas City T-Bones. Tagert led the RailCats to their third championship in franchise history (and their first in the American Association) in 2013. Tagert also managed nine years in the Frontier League (Ohio Valley, Evansville, Dubois County, Kenosha, and Springfield/Ozark), and held the league’s all-time record for managerial wins upon departing for Gary SouthShore. During his first 24 years of managing professional baseball, Tagert has finished with a losing record just twice (2015, 2019). The RailCats were 57-43 in 2017, and won the American Association wild card on the final day of the regular season. In 2018, the RailCats won a franchise-record 59 games and a share of the American Association North Division title. On three occasions since joining the American Association, the RailCats have missed the playoffs by 2.0 games or less. The RailCats finished 1.0 game back of the Central Division lead in both 2011 and 2014, while missing by 2.0 games in 2016. The Goldeyes and RailCats have met twice in the playoffs (2007 and 2008) with the RailCats edging the Goldeyes in both series. Of the nine head-to-head playoff games between the two clubs, seven of them have been decided by three runs or less. The RailCats return to the American Association in 2021 after sitting out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 47-43, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 10.5 games behind the Chicago Dogs. The Goldeyes just split a four-game series with the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field. The Goldeyes are fourth in the American Association in hitting (.282), 10 th in pitching (5.73), and tied for eighth in fielding (.977). The Gary SouthShore RailCats are 36-56, in sixth place in the North, and eliminated from postseason contention. The RailCats just lost two of three to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. The RailCats are 11 th in the league in batting (.254), eighth in pitching (4.99), and 10 th in defence (.976). This is the last of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Gary SouthShore. The Goldeyes were 8-4 against the RailCats in 2019. Harris picked up the win 9/2 vs. CHI: TBA vs. TBA st th on Tuesday at Milwaukee in game one of a double header, ***August 31 will also complete the August 12 suspended game at CHI*** pitching 5.0 shutout innings on one hit. Harris walked three and struck out two. The Goldeyes claimed Harris off waivers from Chicago on July 1 st , and later re-signed him on July 25 th . Prior to this season, Harris last pitched in 2019 where he made three relief appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays’ Rookie Gulf Coast League affiliate. Harris was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17 th round in 2013 out of Los Alamitos High School (Los Alamitos, California). Harris was traded from the Dodgers to the Rays in November of 2014, and had back-to-back seasons of 100.0-plus innings and 100-plus strikeouts in the Rays’ farm system in 2015 and 2016. Baseball America ranked Harris the 18 th best prospect in Tampa Bay’s organization in 2017. Harris’ father, Greg Sr., pitched 15 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1981-95, including 5.1 scoreless innings in the 1984 World Series while pitching for the San Diego Padres. Harris is in his seventh season of professional baseball, and is 33-39 lifetime with a 3.94 ERA in 127 games, 94 of them as a starting pitcher. Harris is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two career starts against Gary SouthShore. Harris is 0-1 with a 36.00 ERA in one career start at US Steel Yard. The RailCats go with rookie right-hander John Sheaks who is 0-6 with a 5.29 ERA in eight starts this season. Sheaks took a no-decision vs. Chicago last Sunday, pitching 7.0 shutout innings on four hits. Sheaks walked one and struck out eight. The Dogs won the game 2-1. Sheaks has allowed three or fewer earned runs in six of his eight starts this season. Sheaks has walked two batters or less in seven of his eight starts this season. Prior to this season, Sheaks last pitched in 2019 during his senior season at Long Beach State University (Long Beach, California). Sheaks was 2-1 with a 7.43 ERA in five starts and 10 relief appearances at Long Beach State as a redshirt senior in 2019. During his junior season in 2017, Sheaks was 8-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 17 starts. Sheaks previously pitched at Saddleback College (Mission Viejo, California). Sheaks is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start against Winnipeg. Sheaks is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three career starts at US Steel Yard. GOLDEYES RETURN HOME: The Winnipeg Goldeyes returned to Shaw Park on Tuesday, August 3 rd with a 14-6 win over the Sioux City Explorers. It marked the Goldeyes’ first official home game since September 2 nd, 2019, which was a span of 701 days. A total of 20 games over 19 home dates were added to the remaining schedule. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION POSTSEASON FORMAT ADJUSTED: On August 4 th , the American Association announced an expanded playoff format. The top three teams in each division by winning percentage will now qualify for the postseason. The second- and third-place teams in each division will meet in a one-game playoff. The winner of the playoff game will face the winner from their own division in a best-of-five Division Series. The Division Series winners then meet in a best-of-five American Association Championship Series. The format originally called for the top two teams in each division qualifying for the postseason and immediately meeting in the Division Series. 99 GAMES: The second game of the scheduled double header on August 22 nd between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kane County Cougars was cancelled due to rain. As per American Association rules, since August 22 nd marked the final scheduled day of games between the clubs this season, the contest will not be made up. As a result, the Goldeyes can play a maximum of 99 games out of the 100 originally scheduled 2021. This marks only the second time in the last 11 years in which the Goldeyes will fall short of a complete regular season schedule. The Goldeyes last fell short in 2015 when they played 99 out of 100 games. Prior to that, the Goldeyes had not lost a game from their schedule since 2010, which was their final season in the Northern League.
