Mary Burnett talbert Mary Burnett Talbert (1866-1923) was a famous American educator, activist, suffragist, preservationist, and international human rights advocate. Talbert was an early champion of anti-racism, and fought to win women the right to vote. She worked tirelessly to improve the status of Black people in the United States and abroad. She was a founding member of the Phyllis Wheatley Club, the first group in Buffalo to affiliate with the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (NACW). As President of the NACW, she purchased and restored the home of the famous American abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, in Anacostia, MD.

Mary Burnett Talbert was a Red Cross nurse in France during World War I and offered classes to African American soldiers. After the war she was appointed to the Women’s Committee on International Relations at the League of Nations. She was instrumental in the founding of the Niagara Movement, a pre-cursor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

In October 2005, Mary Burnett Talbert was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
