Motion Regarding Transit Service Improvements in the Humber Bay Shores Area of Ward 6

The Humber Bay Shores area of Ward 6 – centered around Park Lawn Road and Lake Shore Boulevard – is one of the fastest-growing and most densely-urbanized areas in Toronto. The rapid growth in this area presents significant demands and challenges for all modes of transportation, including transit. As the Councillor for the area, I have received numerous communications about, and have observed first-hand, the congested and frustratingly-slow conditions under which local TTC services – the 501 Queen, 66 Prince Edward, and 145 Downtown/Humber Bay Express – operate. The City and TTC have created a longer-term plan to implement a physically-separated right-of-way for the 501 streetcar between Park Lawn Road and Humber loop. This can’t happen immediately due to outstanding property acquisition necessary for local road widening. While I support this longer-term plan, I believe that action must be taken immediately to improve the operating conditions for these services and commuters in the area. In this context, I am requesting the TTC Board move the following motions to improve the quality and reliability of transit services in the Humber Bay Shores area:

• That Toronto Transportation Services, in consultation with TTC staff, prepare a report for consideration by the TTC Board and the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, describing immediate and short-term means by which to establish a morning peak- period, transit-only lane in the eastbound median lane of Lake Shore Boulevard, between Park Lawn Road and Humber Loop, in order to allow transit services to operate faster and more-reliably; and • That the TTC Board direct staff to investigate and report back on the feasibility and possible benefits of changes to the routing of the 66 Prince Edward bus, including reversing the direction of the on-street loop on Marine Parade Drive.

Sincerely,

Mark Grimes Councillor Ward 6
