London is an amazing city – almost impossible to describe - eight million people, 300 languages, and countless religions - (I once visited a primary school in Battersea where 28 languages were spoken and 22 nationalities and ethnicities of children were taught) – the most live theatres, major opera houses and art October galleries, ethnic restaurants, and cultural and religious diversity of any capital city. 2nd Church Harvest Festival This has happened in the main because London is above all a centre of tolerance, 4th RBL Gardening Club - Autumn Colour 8.00 p.m. where all men and women of good will can live and prosper in peace. OBITUARIES

Audrey Tucker

Whist alternate We give thanks for the life of Audrey Winifred Tucker, who knew the church of Thursday St Laurence Affpuddle very well. She has in sense come home. evenings Audrey was born in Milborne St Andrew in November 1931; one of five siblings Bingo every with three sisters Ena, Ivy and Phyllis and a brother Cyril, who sadly died in 1948. Sunday evening The family moved to Throop where Audrey’s father worked for Joan Herridge’s Gardening Club father Dickie Bamlett, on the farm. Audrey could remember bombs dropping first Tuesday on the fields and one particular bomb was responsible for the creation of the Throop duck pond which still exists today. Schooling was at Briantspuddle each month village school. Everyone welcome - The family moved to No 6 Affpuddle, and one Maurice Tucker happened to live at no.3 contact Secretary Audrey’s first job was working in a restaurant in Dorchester – cycling to 472620 to connect with the bus into Dorchester. Maurice meanwhile was working as a baker in at Piddletrenthide, and it required that he leave Affpuddle at 3.30 in the morning. There were, understandably some mornings when it was simply easier to stay up all night Logs from the lumberjack before going to bake bread before dawn. After Maurice’s National Service in the REME, Maurice and Audrey were married here, at this very place in 1950 by one of my predecessors The Rev Seasoned Hardwood Logs Baker, and they settled a couple of years later at No 7 Affpuddle where they (no softwood) have lived for 53 years. Cut and split to customers’ Audrey was, by now, working for Martin Debenham at East Farm in Affpuddle. requirements In her younger days, Audrey loved country and western dancing and continued so until her hips no longer allowed it. until her hips held her back. As Audrey’s health deteriorated, and her pain increased, so Maurice retired to take better care of her, and he did so for 11 years. The Church was always a very important part of Audrey’s life, and she was a regular attendee until her incapacity prevented her. In this lovely countryside that she loved, and on this St Swithen’s Day, she has come home and become herself the harvest that God promises to all who love Him and follow Him. A real local lady, who loved her family and this place, she will be greatly missed, and we extend our sympathy to Maurice and all her family and friends. In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be placed in a place between her parents’ graves in the churchyard. IW

In a severe heatwave you may get dehydrated and your body may overheat, leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Both need urgent treatment. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin, and a high temperature. You should move somewhere cool and drink plenty of water or fruit juice. If you can, take a lukewarm shower, or sponge yourself down with cold water. Heatstroke can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated, but it can also occur suddenly and without warning. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, an intense thirst, sleepiness, hot, red and dry skin, a sudden rise in temperature, confusion, aggression, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Sue Bennett, Head of Health Protection for Somerset and Dorset explains who is at risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke: “The heat can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk. These include older people, babies and young children, people with a serious chronic condition, particularly breathing or heart problems, and people with mobility problems. If anyone you know is likely to be at risk during a heatwave help them get the advice and support they need. Older people living on their own should be checked on daily. “Mostly it's a matter of common sense. Listen to your local weather forecast so you know if a heatwave is on the way. Try to plan your day so you can stay out of the heat. Outside try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothes, preferably cotton. If you are going to be outside for some time, take plenty of water with you. Inside stay in the coolest rooms in your home, as much as possible. Keep windows closed while the room is cooler than it

Former BA Pilot Keith Nourish heightened nerves by relaying a string of alarming stories about the times his plane was struck by lightning in mid flight causing a near loop-d- loop on a couple of occasions! He assured us that being hit by lightning on a golf course whilst holding a metal club mid-backswing was no fun, guaranteed to make the last remaining wisps of hair on Roger Johns and Peter Cheeseman’s head stand on end! Once the storm passed over the weather soon brightened up, alongside the golf where some great play was displayed matching the high class venue. The conditions proved tough for some however, including that weathered soul, ROGS’ most famous caddy Brian ‘The Prune’ Hollinshead. An ever present, he is regularly seen shoving Roger Duncanson’s bag and trolley up the 18 th fairway looking half dead on hands and knees after a torrid round zig-zagging up and down fairways following Roger’s ball. This time he was invited to play one of the holes, so with eager anticipation he teed up his ball but unknown to the king of caddy’s he was given a soap ball which, upon Brian hitting it promptly exploded into a puff of smoke. Brian reappeared through the haze 5 seconds later and is now enjoying a happy retirement not just from golf but after 45 years of work. Happy retirement from all at ROGS, not least Jim Corbin who says a special thank you! Following on from winning the ROGS Summer Tour prize of Top Golfer, the Captain’s Cup was won by John Ruskin. Jamie Lake was the bridesmaid for the day and Mr ‘B&Q’ Robbie Hall claimed third. The Captain ran a lucky holes Scout Bingo Scout Hut for Hire competition which was won by Jamie Lake, alongside a popular winner not usually accustomed to appearing on the winners podium but who always puts in Every other Friday 100%, John Pitts. Usual ROGS prizes of nearest the pin and longest drive were won £25.00 or by negotiation. 8.00 p.m. at the by Julian Flower, Geoff Adams and Brett Standerwick. Congratulations to all! 36 41 August 2005 August 2005 BERE REGIS AND DISTRICTICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Going, GOING, GONE! - it certainly will be, if you leave it too late to reserve a seat(s) on our coach to Cerences, Fri 16th - Sun 18th Sept. The yellow "flyers" which were circulated a few weeks ago, combined with our lunchtime event at The Drax Arms on Sunday, 17th July, has sparked much enthusiasm for the forthcoming visit, with several new members having joined the Association.

We were most grateful to Tim and Sonia of The Drax Arms for allowing the use of the skittle alley for our recruiting event and for the nice buffet which they agreed ROGS and Sports Club to provide - not forgetting their kind donation of wine. Roger and Judy arranged a display of photos of past twinning visits and events, along with an excellent DVD of Normandy. We also kept one foot this side of the Channel with another display of the Parish Plan, and which was given quite an airing. ANNUAL SUMMER BBQ
